A story on NPR's morning edition today talked about the fact that, in this econonmy, SUV and pickup truck sales are down, electric and hybrid car sales are up, and SO is large farm machinery!! With the price of corn rising, farmers (some--at least the one interviewed in Nebraska) are seeing an increase in profit and are taking advantage...

Hi Jonni!
I have some friends who are farmers. They run cattle and grow corn and a few other crops as well. He told me there is quite a waiting list for tractors because farmers are finally making a profit and are able to buy/replace machinery. Basically Corn and Wheat prices are in a record high zone right now and farmers sell their current crop and then pre-sell their next crop. That way they get the money ahead of the year they grow the crop in and they lock in that price for the next year. So if wheat suddenly became affordable again, the farmer would have already made his/her profit for the next growing season. It's about time the farmer got his ice in the summer too! (Sorry for the vague reference to Laura Ingalls Wilder...I just had too!)

They mentioned the wait on machinery in the story, Alee. What folks would normally wait 6 months for, they're now waiting 18-20 months!

If anyone would have heard me this morning, commuting in on the expressway shouting in my little car, "Woohooo for the farmer! FINALLY, a little breathing room!!!" you might have thought me crazy, or WAY overcaffienated :)

ROFL! Yes, we might suffer for it a bit in the grocery store, but I think the farmers have been suffering longer. I know several farm families that were planning extravagant vacations to Hawaii and buying huge trucks (gas guzzlers) for recreation and such since they finally have money, but I know a lot of them are tucking away the extra bills because they know that the high prices wont last forever and things are going to be more expensive. It came at the best time for a lot of farmers- the old tractors were not functioning well or were held together with duct tape.
