oh what fun! honey hunk took me to the doc to check on my 'toe' .. he sez it is gittin' all better! (i'm still not driving though .. will 'hit the roads' by myself again next week though!)

after the doc appointment .. we had lunch together at a yummy new restaurant .. then he dropped me off at the Peddlar's Mall while he went to the lake to get in his daily "rowing".

I have this great book called "Garden Junk" .. soooo .. my mission today was to find 'garden junk' .. well .. i didn't! BUT .. my heart went pitty-pat at a booth with VERY reasonable primitive farm implements .. i got each of these for only TWO DOLLARS each .. which i thought was VERY reasonable!!

(i already had the cute abraham lincoln pillow) .. but just tossed it in there with my other treasures for a 'kodak' moment.

i've been collecting this olde farm stuff since moving here to kentucky. (usta' have quite a bit of it when we lived in the mountains of kentucky and had a barn .. but i eventually sold it when we moved 'back east' and lived 'riverside' .. but my passion was rekindled by my 'ole kentucky home!

Oh my Frannie!! what a find..all that stuff is wonderful !!! I love primitve stuff like that. I hung a "thing" made of rusty metal that I found on the ground out by the barn in my little patio "outpost" a couple years ago..not knowing what it was..and hung garden tools off of it..my husband walked by and said..."Hey! I have been looking for my fence tightener!"...he didn't get it back..he made another one. I guess it was for pulling chain link fence tight. Well..when he puts me up some chain link fencing he can sure have it back...but until then..it is my garden tool rack..haha.

If its the same one I'm thinking i bought the most AMAZING Green chippy paint step back cabinet there. the guy was wheeling it in and I said don' bother, just wheel it right out to my truck! Truly. It now is the centerpiece of my kitchen. When I say amazing, well...One of these days I really do have to get that photobucket thingy worked out.

Beautiful things, Frannie. Thanks for sharing. Now, if they could only talk and tell us their stories about how they were used.

oh wilma .. i often say kentucky .. for colorado ..

gosh the 'mountains' of kentucky and most of this side of the United States are just 'foothills' compared to most of those in COLORADO .. and 'out west'. (there are some BIG-GUNS up in NEW ENGLAND though!) VERMONT being my mos' fav to visit.

even the 'lowlands' of Denver is a mile high .. higher than the tallest mountain in Eastern Kentucky, (Black Mountain i do believe) coming in at a little above 4,000 feet above sea level.

in Colorado, we lived in a beautiful three-story A frame home on the side of a mountain .. the front was ALL GLASS (divided only where the floors were) .. it brought OUTSIDE .. INSIDE more than anywhere we've ever lived.

and those COLORADO 'foothills' where our home was were at ELEVEN THOUSAND feet above sea level! now THAT's mountains!

(but then it is a 'relative' term .. if you have no hills, or foothills near you .. they will be your 'mountains' when you see them).

.. in colorado ... our view was the most majestic mountains .. still not 'quite' tall enough to not have trees grow .. so they were lush in summertime and snow-filled in the wintertime. (those awesome Colorado mountains are where i first found my love for 'primitive' .. it was like living in God's BACK YARD.) it is where we had our fun experience for 'farm critters'. our oldest daughter had a horse, our youngest daughter had the proverbial childhood wish for a 'pony' .. we had aracauna chickens that laid eggs with the most beautiful green and blue hues. We had two 'pet ducks' .. named ROCK and ROLL. We had LOTS of Olde English Sheepdogs (the momma and daddy, Rugby and Nannie were in love). We had a most precious goat named TROLL .. who was somewhat of a 'houseguest' when he chose to just 'butt the front door open' and come in for a snack on one of my plants (usually leaving a 'thank you deposit' of lilttle black 'pebbles') We had all the assorted and asundry domestic pets including fish, birds, rabbits, gerbils, etc. etc. (our girls had a WONDERFUL childhood while living in Colorado!) neither were born there nor lived there their entire childhood .. but lovingly always call COLORADO their 'childhood home'

we had a 'southern' view .. so the windows were totally covered with some sort of wonderful 'film' that protected us from summertime sunshine ... where .. during the day .. you could see OUT the window from inside .. (but you could not see inside our home because of the film ..

wouldn't have mattered anyway because there were no homes in our view on that mountainside.

AND if you stood on the deck .. it was a huge reflection of the mountains across the way from us .. and when you turned .. there they were again!!

oh magnificent GOD .. they were what God's 'nature on earth' was all about for me. The only time i've ever seen more magnificent mountains was in ALASKA.

The only draw-back was that birds saw it as a huge open sky and would sometimes (thankfully, not too often) fly into the window.

having lived on the EAST COAST (as in VERY close to the ATLANTIC OCEAN) .. when i speak of 'back east' .. i don't consider anywhere in kentucky to be 'back east' .. it is more 'inland' to me with 'hills and hollows') and we adore having included kentucky in our homes during our lifetime. it is such a perfect place for us to have 'retired' .. t'would only be grander if our children and grandes lived nearby .. and better-equipped hospitals would be nice too!

it's funny, cuz' when Brad sold us our farm .. (and oh my gosh what wonderful friends he and his family are to us!) he took us to lunch one afternoon in Bardstown ... (and Brad being from 'back east' ... NEW JERSEY) he told us that we would probably often catch ourselves calling KENTUCKY .... TENNESSEE. I told him that was funny .. i'd lived here for a couple months and never caught myself doing that. WELL .. after a lovely lunch .. we all went to one of the nice antiques shoppes on Bardstown's main street .. and i asked the lady who worked there if she had any books by TENNESSEE writers. i heard from behind me .. Brad saying: SEE!!! (as i blushed and said: "OH .. i mean KENTUCKY". I just laughed .. and i've discovered that instead of TENNESSEE .. i will sometimes refer to Kentucky as COLORADO .. or Colorado as Kentucky. (probably because i have lived in those two places and not Tennessee.

oh gurlfrenz .. tell us of your very mos' favorite home and place you've lived in your lifetime. TELL US A STORY! i ADORE hearing my gurlfrenz' stories.

oh .. wilma .. I think my 'orthopedic' doctor who is watching after my broken toe said he was from 'eastern Kentucky' .. his name is Dr. Sanders .. and from time to time a Green Countian will tell me they were from 'eastern kentucky'. i think i got to understand better the culture of Kentucky by reading lots of wonderful books .. both fact and fiction .. after moving here. my all-time most favorite being the 'novels' of Janice Holt Giles.

luna dear .. i have indeed found some 'good finds' there .. but of late, have been somewhat disappointed .. perhaps it is because i now have so much and don't collect nearly as much as i used to. HA! in Colorado, when i first discovered 'primitive' .. i would use the bread and milk money to buy primitives .. fearing they would run out. OH SILLY ME! my dear friend Pamela from BEEHIND THYME up in Campbellsville .. lordy .. when i go in there with her .. she will come out with two carts full of wonderfuls! I MUST take you to her cute shoppe someday soon!

oh Marcy .. isn't it the truth honey ... but ya' know .. we can start NOW .. and tell how WE use them and decorate with them .. where we got them .. all our stories of what they have meant in our lives. I can often walk to a piece and have memories come flooding over me of people and places .. and how i have used that piece. I ADORE books that tell stories of earlier times, people and what they treasured. Marcy, what types of treasures make your heart sing?

How lucky you both are, to have had the opportunity to travel and live in such beautiful parts of our country. I have NEVER been to Colorado or the inerior parts of the country. I do hope to see it some day. In fact, KY feels like both West and South to me. i have been to California, San Francisco, LA and the coast up to Washington where my son Will went to school for two years. I have also been to Vermont, New Hampshire and many good times in the Berkshires of Massachusettes. I also lived in Florida (Jacksonville) for a year and Washington DC for about 5 years from wheree I could also travel to Virginia and Maryland. So I guess on writing this I have been a few places. So far, i do have to say that I love Kentucky the best. I hope to get down to Tennessee at some point and I'm sure I wll love that too. On my list of things to do before leaving the earth is to see the Grand Canyon and the beautiful mountains and desserts of the west and south west.

wilma .. hank and i were laying in the hammock yesterday afternoon and talking about heading back up 'nawth' for a little vacation-ette someday soon too. i LOVE the lakes in new hampshire and vermont. we used to rent a beach home for two weeks each year on the eastern shore .. hank LOVES the hot sun and water ..i am MUCH more a 'sit by the river under an olde tree on an antique quilt with a good book' kinda' girl. luckily, there were enough antiques shoppes in the area to keep me running the roads during the hot noon-day sun. i'd join him on the beach in the evening .. and for fun and festivities on the 'boardwalk' at night. but now that we are 'retired' ..he wants to rent a house 'at the beach' for a month. i need to find historic homes and sites (and mayhaps an antiques shoppe or two) in any area i'm going to spend a whole month at. i think we have a compromise .. going to New England .. at first he wanted 'sea-side' .. but said he would be just as happy BIG 'lake-side'. there is soooooooooooooooooo much to do in New England and it is breath-takingly beautiful there .. i prefer the AUTUMN to visit there though when the leaves are turning.

luna .. i want to take my daughter, kristen and grand-daughter, jennifer to colorado for a visit .. i'm trying to conjure up a 'birthday trip' for her sometime early october (october 6 being her birthday). i have to see if their jobs will allow them to take a week or two off at that time though. did you know that i lived in Ft. Lauderdale for a year or so? i can't say that was my fav weather!! i was PREGGO at the time .. and when i sat on the beach with all those beautiful, nubile-bodied college girls on spring break .. i felt like a bleached-out .. beached whale.

i think if i 'had' to choose a fav place i've ever lived .. it would, indeed be COLORADO .. the early 70's .. such a 'laid-back' somewhat 'hippy' .. cowboy, ranch, country, farming, mountain style of living ... ALL OF THOSE! but then .. i also think it was when the girls were little and discovering the world!
we lived in the 'foothills' of Evergreen for several years .. WONDERFUL MEMORIES .. then we moved to the Big City of DENVER .. which also had it's charm. it was still very much a 'small town' compared to D.C. .. it has indeed gotten quite yuppie in the intervening years .. as has Evergreen .. what with it becoming a 'bedroom community' to Denver.

The mountains were charming .. but they just did not afford all the cultural and learning opportunites i wanted for my daughters. Wednesday was already deeply loving ballet .. and they only had on sweet little Dolly Dainty 'wanna-be' dance school up there. She was with the fabulous Colorado Ballet when we moved to Denver.

you and allen have got to go to the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee with us .. i especially LOVE all the olde original log cabins in Cades Cove!

I've seen the GRAND CANYON (from the TOP) .. hank has rafted in it! it is awesome! xo

i was going to suggest New England for Hank. Maine is one of my favorite areas. Also, believe or not the Jersey Shore is some of the nicest there is. I grew up around it so maybe its just in me. There have been outbreaks of pollution but they are constantly monitoring it. Once you get away from the truly commercial areas there are some really nice spots. Long Beach Island is one my favorites on the Jersey Shore.

Mss Wilma

Where to do you go in New Hampshire? That is also a very beautiful state. i haven't been there except to pass through. My son's girlfriend's family lives there so I may be taking a trip there in the future if they get anymore serious. They will both be going to school in Maine this fall. So I may have ocassion to get there too.

Aunt Jenny, I have a primitive rusty "something" I'll put in a box I'm filling for you, wondered who might love whatever it is. I think it's a curry comb, but my knowledge of farm tools other than the norm is not so great-so, you can tell me if I'm right. It's wood and metal and has "teeth". Nope, it's not George Washington's wooden dentures :)
