I found this book at my library, and I think I'm going to have to make a purchase: Back to Basics, How to learn and enjoy traditional American skills, 2nd edition.
It is comprehensive, with alot of color photos with step by step instructions on EVERYTHING. Part One - Land: Buying it and building on it, Part Two- Energy: from wood, water, wind and sun, Part Three - Raising: your own vegetables, fruit and livestock, Part Four - Harvest: enjoying it year round, Part Five- Skills: and crafts for house and homestead, Part Six- Recreation: at home and in the wild.
You might want to check it out too... lots of this stuff I probably won't do, but braided rug making, and soap making, cheese and butter making, basketry, etc... those really interest me. (This might be similar to Carla Emery's books.)
Anywho, another good resource:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0895779390/103-9108571-5643827?v=glance&n=283155&s=books&v=glance
May the sun bring you new energy by day, may the moon softly restore you by night, may the rain wash away your worries, may the breeze blow new strength into your being, may you walk gently through the world and know its beauty all the days of your life. ~~Apache Blessing

Looks like another good one. While I was on Amazon, looked up the RD Country Ways book and they have several softcover copies for 1 cent!!! Good grief - thought I got a bargain at the used book store! While on the subject of books, today I started one called The Funny Farm, by Jackie Moffat. What an enjoyable book - a farm in Cumbria (England). She's funny and it's just delightful! Hope y'all don't mind another recommendation from me... |

Clare I have an old book you would just LOVE. It is Collier's Cyclopedia (not Encyclopedia) of Social and Commercial Information. It has EVERYTHING. Published in 1882, starts with Grammar, then Poetical Quotations, self taught French, how to play the pianoforte, basic algebra, how to drive horses, how to ride a bicycle, it has illustrations on how to swim and how to drown, a whole chapter on Mercantile Law, and etiquette for courtship and matrimony it has chapters on how to raise poultry and cattle, and get this a whole chapter on "Laws relating to the rights of American Women" !!! That chapter talks about Marriage and how the man can take everything.it is an awesome book wish I could share.
