I got some bad news yesterday that Carla Emery had had a heart attack while on tour in Odessa, TX...and then this morning that she had passed away. I hope she knew how many lives she touched with her book...what a treasure..she was a wonderful, gentle, quiet person and I am glad I got to know her and have her in my home. Her husband will need extra prayers for sure to get through this. She was the strong one emotionally in their relationship. If you all don't know who Carla is is wrote the "Encyclopedia of Country Living" (formerly called "the Old Fashioned Recipe Book". It is a wonderful source of info about all things homesteading....there have been 9 editions over the years..but I love the older ones the best. Just thought I would pass the info on. She had been mentioned in another post recently and I was sure sad to hear the news.

oh no, Jenny!!
What sad, sad news. Carla's book should have been called the "Country Living Bible" because in the homesteading movement, it is a book to live by. I saw a story about her life once on a show that escapes me now, but I simply remember her fortitude in times of hardship and struggle to be unending.I feel Carla had a hand in teaching me most of the farmgirl things that I have learned in my life because I always referred to her opinion first, before researching further.
I will keep her husband in my prayers.

Oh what sad news. She left a legacy to so many of us that will be cherished for years to come. To those that knew her and those she shared herself so generously, she will be missed. Jenny, I remember how excited you were when she came to visit you. That will be a treasured memory for you I am sure.

Jenny, That is so sad to hear of her passing. I have cherished her book for 25 years. It is what inspired me to want and know that I could acheive the country life. How wonderful that you were able to have a personal relationship with her. I know you must be hurting...I will hold her husband in my prayers.

Jenny, that is very sad news, she will be missed by so many people. How blessed and fortunate for you to have had her in your home. You know I thought I did alot of things, you've got me beat. You are truly, in every sense of the word (or phrase) a true pioneer women. Michele

Jenny, I am sorry to hear about Carla. She was an inspiration for all us country girls. When my Uncle retired as a longshoreman and he and my Aunt moved back to our little town in Idaho, the other longshoremen gave my Aunt the first of Carla's books. We all loved it.

Carla was 66 years old. A friend of mine here in town who helped host her (she got the ads done and I got to have Carla at my home and all) when she was here to speak in our town in 2004 talked to Carla's husband today on the phone and we heard a little more details about what happened. She had a really bad infection (I don't know what type) that caused her heart attack. So sad. She seemed to be so strong and healthy. Makes you really think about doing what is important and living life to it's fullest..which I think she did. I feel blessed to have known her.

I had bought Carla's book in the early 70's I think and when she came to our food coop this year to speak, I couldn't wait to get her to autograph it for me. She was so friendly and I felt like I had known her for years. It was a great thrill for me. We enjoyed her so much and we were so looking forward to her return this next spring.

I am going to bite the bullet....I don't know Carla Emery. I really did not want to admit this to all of you because I seem to be in the minority. Please either privately e-mail me or post information so that I can appreciate your loss and many others that was touched by her life.

I didn't either Linda - wishing I had now as it sounds like she was a wonderful educator and inspiration. I looked online at my local library and I am checking out her encyclopedia.

I only found out about Carla Emery and her fantastic book last month and signed up for her newsletter, and I got an e-mail from her husband about putting me on the mailing list. I also just put her book on my Amazon list last week and am going to put the order through today. I am really sad that she is gone but I am going to promote her book on my blog, my website, and tell everyone about her as she is a true inspiration and more people need to know about her!

I first came across Carla Emery's book back in the hippie days of the 1970's. Over the years I would get it out every once in a while and enjoyed it as if it was the first time I had read it. I found a copy of the book at a yard sale last year and got it for my daughter. I am not ready to pass my copy along just yet, now I won't have to.
Even though I never had the pleasure of meeting Carla, I felt as if I knew her through reading her personal experiences. My favorite parts of the book was the photographs.
Condolences to her loved ones.
