What's NIV or Amplified or NASB? I'm assuming they are study guides...do they detail who is giving the explanations too? Anyway, what do those acronyms means? Sounds very interesting..~julia

The NIV is New International Version. I have a Women's Devotional NIV. It's nice. It's a study Bible my mom gave me for my birthday. I have found a couple inaccurate places in it however. Well I don't know if inaccurate is the proper word to use there. But a couple of places it doesn't match up to say a King James Version very well. I can't remember exactly where those verses are right now. But it's written in today's english which makes it very easy to understand.

I'm not sure what the Amplified or the NASB is however. There's a site online that I like to use from time to time. www.biblegateway.com Oh I just checked biblegateway and if you go to the link on the left that says "available versions" it will take you to a listing of the Bibles they have available on their site and in what languages they are available. The NASB is the New American Standard Bible. If you click on the name of the Bible it will take you to another page and will describe what kind of Bible it is.

Hope this helps.

If you want a fun translation to read, try 'the Message'. It's completely paraphrased, so it wouldn't make for a study Bible at all, but it's a good read. My favorite book out of it is Ecclesiastes.

I saw 'the Message' a few months ago at Wal-Mart. Do you really like it?

As Melanie said above, NASB stands for New American Standard Bible. I have heard from some educated bible scholars that it is a good translation for accuracy. It is my favorite. I took some classes here at a Center for Biblical Studies, and they used that translation, too. The New International Version is very popular. My son-in-law, who is a pastor, says the important thing is to find a bible that is as accurate as possible, and one you feel comfortable with using. For me it is the NASB. He uses one called the English Standard Bible.

It can get confusing, so when you choose one, look it over and make sure it is one you feel good about. Then, mark it up with notes as you learn, make it your own, and use it all the time. I love to see bibles that are so worn from being loved through the years.

The Message is popular, too, makes all the scripture read like a story, but the chapter and verse is hard to find, and it is a little too modern for me. But it can help make everything very understandable. I would not use it as my main bible, but I have seen others love it.

For the most accurate translation from the biblical languages, I have been told the NASB is good.

Hey girls I was on vacation last week so I am just getting into this study. I really struggle with feeling "just right" but not necessarily because I am comparring myself to someone else. Sometimes I just don't feel like I am living up to the best I can be wether spiritually or just in my everyday life. I grew up going to church, I went to a christian college, married a great christian guy but sometimes I feel like God is still in the background. At my church the scriptures read are projected onto a screen so I have gotten lazy about taking my bible to church. Until I opened up my bible for this study I think it sat there unopened for about a year!!! YIKES!

There was also some talk about bible translations. I use the NIV as well. I find the language pretty easy to follow most of the time. I did own "The Message" some time ago. It came out when I was in college and was very popular but also very controversial. The translation is so loose and "trendy" in some places that I really think you can miss the true meaning of what is being said. I used it as a secondary source to help me understand tough passages but eventually I found it was so far off that I chose to get rid of it and just use my NIV.

Looking forward to the next study!

I'm with you 100% on the Message, Julie. Like I said...definitely not a study Bible. It's more like reading a 'modern' opinion or view point on each verse. Some of it you have to let go, because it's not completely accurate.

I want to join in too!!! I use an NIV study Bible. Using a study Bible has really opened up the Word for me. If I don't understand something there are notes right in the side bar. (I really need that) I just bought a commentary at the resale shop which I'm going to see how to incorporate that into my study. I've never used one before so we'll see how that goes.

Our church does not have a summer study either. I was going to start one up but our ladies did not seem very gung ho about it. Probably for the best since I've been super busy myself. But I do need to get back into God's Word!

Having the right Bible for you makes all the difference. If you don't understand it you're not going to sit down and read it.

Now that I've written a novel! I really must get rolling. I'm looking forward to studying with you all!

Hi Julia!
It's Brenda from Spokane! Hope things are going well with Arial and the leukemia treatments. Your family truly is in my prayers. Since you are an avid reader, I would like to encourage you to read a book called, "A case for Christ." It answers many of the questions of, "Why should I believe in God or the Bible?" and is great for the more analytical mind, which it sounds like is more you. I think it would really help you out. If you do historical studies on religions, you will see Christianity came before Hinduism and that much of it's precepts are based off of the same beliefs as Christianity. But they replace it with a different God. It is kind of the knock off "off brand" of the real thing. There is a speaker coming to Spokane on September 5 and 6 to teach "why Christians believe what they believe." It is termed "apologetics" but this throws most people, as it is such a technical sounding term. If you are interested in info. on this conference, I would be happy to email the info. to you. He will have a question and answer time too, so you can ask about the different religions and basically "make him prove" Christianity. I think this is a great way for you to decide for yourself on Christianity. No one can force you to be a Christian . . . it has to be something you choose to believe. Hopefully this will be helpful.

Hugs & blessings,

Brenda

I missed it last night but got to it today. This devotion was in my inbox this am, from Morris Cerrello. The verse is Lam. 3: 22-23 Getting a good nights rest is so important for our health and well being. However most of us do worry at night and have trouble sleeping. That is why this devotion is so good. The devotion is below. Do post and tell us how you rely on our father and get a good nights rest without the worry.

So many times we just assume that while we sleep, our Lord must be sleeping as well. Well, good news... God never sleeps nor slumbers!

Do you know that God is at work every moment of the day on your behalf? We sometimes act like He begins to work the minute we open our eyes and stops working the minute we close them to sleep. I have good news for you. You have no need to worry, for even while you are asleep God is working in your behalf and Jesus is making intercession for you.

That’s why the Lord said, "The Lord's mercies...are new every morning..." (Lam. 3:22-23) because He has spent your night time preparing for the events and circumstances for your next day – working all things for good in your behalf. He also has His precious angels surrounding you right now. Be still and feel His presence as you lay there in your bed.

You see, God is faithful to take care of and handle that which you commit to him. So trust in Him tonight and have a blessed sleep. Do not let the devil rob you of a blessed rest in Jesus. Give Him your concerns, your family, your loved ones, your "right now" and your tomorrow. Remember, He is ever working, ever protecting, ever providing, ever faithful and forever caring...

That is such a good one! Thank you for posting that. It is easy to let our concerns get the best of us, to focus on them so hard that we forget that above all, God is there...through all, God is there...and when we get to the end of it all, God will be there. I love to lay in bed at night and just talk to God, to give Him all that's in me and try to leave it there so I can get a refreshing sleep. It doesn't always work but I think that making the effort is making a little change in me each night. I love the fellowship and ease it brings to my heart.

Hey ladies. Interesting focus for devotion. I find the Old Testament baffling. Not that I don't understand it per se, it is just that God of the Old Testament is so mean. God yields His wrath for the sins of man at His will and sometimes for unknown reasons. Poor sinful folks are left to suffer. Lamentations of the Old Testament is such a sorrowful book. As you know it was written by Jeremiah in the 6th century BC to describe in great detail his view of what happened to the fall of Jerusalem. It is worth mention that the beginning of this chapter is filled with Jeremiah's complaints about God: He has turned against me. He has made me old and broken my bones. He has built forts against me. He has walled me in. He will not hear my prayers though I scream and shout. So on and so forth until the pinnacle verse of 3:21 which begins "yet there is one ray of hope" and it goes into the mercy so described.

Help me Ladies. I don't get it. Forgive me, but I find God in this instance completely insane and I'm not too sure about Jeremiah either. Tell me, help me understand..how can a person view God as the reason for his torment and suffering accepting that because he is an obviously sinful man, he somehow deserves it. He is someone who like all of those of Jerusalem disobeyed God and deserve to be punished this way. In the very next breath, this man declares God merciful for the faithful. We can rest knowing that God is looking out for us. As Jeremiah goes on for the rest of chapter he continues is this sort of twisted perspective. People sinned against God, so God punishes them but God doesn't like punishing them because he loves them but they deserve it anyway and so forth. It sounds like an abusive parent to me and I can't wrap my head around it.

Forgive me, for I am most definitely doomed because I am clearly a great sinner and deserve horrible earthly punishment for my transgressions. Even saying what I just said clearly has me reserved for a first class trip to hell. If I actually believed that, which I don't, I'd never in a million years sleep again! I'd be frantically worrying what kind of awfulness will fall upon me because God lovingly thinks I deserve to be punished. The bottom line for me is that God has never been and will never be scary, fearful, vengeful and mean in my view.

When I read your posts I realize that the movement from an all powerful meannie kind of God in the Old Testament to a loving God and Father in the New Testament is a fascinating evolution. Indeed we have Jesus to thank for his contribution in that regard to Christianity. It is a significant and beautiful thing.

Brenda, forgive me, but I think you are mistaken about the origin of Hinduism and I think Hindus might take offense to you calling their ancient religion, whose actual origin isn't known but is believed to be about 5000 years old, a knock-off brand of the real thing. I presume that for you the real thing is Christianity. But remember that Hinduism and Islam as well as Christianity make up the world's 3 largest organized religions. Budduism, too is also an ancient religion whose origin is also pre-christian at roughly 500 BC. In both religions God is viewed as infinitely compassionate and loving. What Jesus brought to the Middle East in this regard wasn't new in other parts of the world but was revolutionary to the polytheistic Roman rulers as well as the terrified Jewish people still pontificating the Old Testament. I know very little about Islam at this time so I can't comment about it but I'll begin my study of that soon. Your book recommendation is interesting and I will check it out. I thank you for it and I am deeply grateful to have you keeping Aria and my family so close. Her healing is proof of your goodness.

Ladies, I'm probably the bible study nightmare participant. Forgive me. It is my very humble belief that the world's religions need not contradict one another but in fact can compliment one another with the very same things they try to portray. God is compassionate. God is loving. God takes care of us. God is forgiving. The lesson of this chapter and verse for me isn't the reminder of who and what God is but rather of who and what am I. Am I compassionate as God has designed me to be. Am I loving? Am I forgiving? Do I take care? Do I forgive? What Jesus illustrated so well was the divinity well within humans. He was a man and he was God. His example teaches us that we each possess the design of God. It is the simple purpose of our creation.

That's my nickle's worth...If I'm made any offense do tell me.. I'm wide open to learning what I clearly don't understand.

God's love to you all! ~julia

I can totally understand where you're coming from Julia, I don't fully grasp the concept of God that's generally presented in the Old Testament. I've gone to church all my life and I still don't get it. I, personally, think that where you are at and the thoughts you presented are a good place to be in, a place I try to put myself in as well. It is great that you are able to take something from the lesson even if it isn't the same as had been presented :) For me I just have to keep looking within myself and seeking God to let him guide me on how to understand his word. It isn't always easy because I can't always explain things to someone else but I'm comfortable with where I'm at in my relationship with him right now. Much of what God has to say is as you described what you took from the lesson, we are to take him as an example of what we should be like in our lives-loving, compassionate, forgiving, giving, etc. It's a constant process and we can all only do what we're able. Thanks for bringing in a new voice :)

PHEW!! Leezard! thank you so much for you generous words. I am so grateful for them. I put myself out there..on the line if you will..or at least that's how I felt. I certainly don't want to come across blaphemous per se, I just want ask some questions and gain some perspective and insight. Your words calmed my insecurity and I thank you! I get great satisfaction from spiritual discussions and study. This bible study is brand spanking new to me despite the fact that I was raised in a devout Catholic family with nuns on both sides. My mother even spent time in a convent wondering if she was called to be a nun. I, too, spent time considering a religious life and I find now that my ordinary life and my religious life are blending into my life as it is in this moment. There are fewer degrees of separation with the two as I get older. In fact I 'm also more devout than ever. Funny how that happens. My blessings and wish for your peace..~julia

Gals, I'm feeling totally insecure that my input has killed this discussion group. Me and my big fat trap! I sure hope not. I truly love this particular topic despite the fact I'm not a true 'believer' per se. I have a strong personality that some view as leaning toward the opinionated. I hoped my view would provoke discussion not silence it completely. Please post another passage for discussion and do let me know if what I said soured anyone. My intentions were good but I fear the result may have been something else. It reminds me of something I read once.
(I'm paraphrasing)
The disciple said to the Master, "But aren't good intentions good enough?"
The Master replied, "Oh no, it is with good intentions that the monkey saves the fish from his watery grave."
Ladies, humbly, please keep this discussion going....~julia

Persistent Friendship
By Melissa Taylor

"And now may the Lord show kindness and truth to you.
I also will repay you this kindness, because you have done this thing."
(2 Samuel 2:6 ~ NKJV)

Devotion:

Donna and I grew up together. We weren't each other's closest friend, but we were always friends. I knew if I needed someone, she would be there. She was so kind to me but was never afraid to tell me the truth...even when it hurt. She was fun, caring, accepting, forgiving, non-judgmental, and honest. There aren't many friends like that.

Over the years, we went our separate ways. We both got married, had children and life got busy. Our paths didn't cross often, even though we lived in the same city. When we ran into one another unexpectedly, we'd say, "We have GOT to get together and catch up!" Then we never would. I missed her and began to feel guilty for not pursuing our friendship more. I remember a mutual friend of ours saying, "I can't believe you both live in Charlotte and never see each other. You have no excuse!"

One day during my quiet time, I read a verse that made me think of Donna. It was 2 Samuel 2:6. I don't have an explanation for her coming to my mind except that it had to be from God, so I prayed that verse for her. "Lord please show your kindness and truth to Donna and I will show her kindness and truth too, because she has shown it to me many times." I didn't know why, but I knew I had to get in touch with her.

Contacting her was difficult. I called. I emailed. Weeks went by and I heard nothing. I made sure that I left all of my contact information and a nice message. Still, nothing from Donna. For over a month, I called and left messages. I began to get discouraged. Was she mad at me? Then I got a little worried. What if something has happened to her? I was not going to give up. My last call to her was one of desperation. I left a message saying, "Donna, this is Melissa. I have been trying to contact you, but you won't return my calls or emails. If you don't want to talk to me or you are mad, that's okay. Just call me and let me know that you are alive. I'm worried about you. Please call!" She called me back.

That was a year ago. It was such a blessing that we reconnected. Donna was going through hard times. I was about to go through hard times as well. God knew that Donna needed a friend close by who could understand and be there for her. He also knew I was about to go through one of the roughest trials of my life. It was perfect timing. Another blessing that came out of our reconnection is that our daughters became close friends. They had never met until now and they are crazy about each other.

I'm glad I was a persistent friend, persisting in my attempts to find Donna. I was not giving up because I considered our relationship valuable enough to pursue. If I had given up after the first call, or second or third, we would still be apart. I hate to even think about going through this past year without her. Persistence is often necessary in obtaining a blessing.

Have you ever thought about how persistent God is with us? How many times have I wandered off or put someone or something else above Him, yet He never left me. The Lord considers us valuable enough to pursue, and He wants us to "call back" and communicate so the relationship can flourish and grow.

God is pursuing a friendship with you right now. He offers you kindness, truth, forgiveness, acceptance, unconditional love, and loyalty. He's the best friend you could ever have. He will never give up on you because He is a persistent Friend.

Dear Lord, When others walked out, You never did. When I walked away, You waited for me to come back. Thank you for being my persistent Friend. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Application Steps:

Make plans to reconnect and spend time with someone you haven't seen in a while. If you can't reach them at first, don't give up. Be persistent.

Reflections:

Has someone tried to be a persistent friend to you? Have you called them back?

Is there someone God has placed on your heart to contact?

How is your friendship with God? Are you spending time with your Friend Jesus?

Power Verses:

Proverbs 17:17, "A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need." (NLT)

Proverbs 18:24, "Some friends don't help, but a true friend is closer than your own family." (CEV)

Exodus 33:11a, "So the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend." (NKJV)

There is a friend that I have tried and tried to hang out with and she is busy. Now I am busy and she has called. I did return her call but was not persistant and need to try again tomorrow. I also need to be a persisitant friend to Jesus as I know he is persistant with me and he seeks me out. I like all the verses listed and I am off to soak them in.

No worries! I know we're all busy, especially this time of year-I just didn't know if I'd missed something and we weren't doing it any more. I really appreciate you posting it for us! Maybe, if you'd like, some of us could take turns posting one. I don't know if I have any books on hand right now but I know they're all over the internet. Let us know if we can help you out with that at all :)

Ooooohhhhh...that's a good one, one I really needed! I know that I'm lax in my relationship with Christ and I don't even have any excuses because in my job I have plenty of free time to strengthen that relationship. I don't think it's lazyness but sometimes just feeling like I don't know where to start even though I know it's as simple as just talking to him and listening for his reply. I think the listening part is the hardest because I expect an answer in a certain way and it doesn't generally happen like that. I am the listener in my group of friends, when someone's having a rough time or just needs to talk I am the one that they tend to come to and I love that. We are also kind of a vocal group and there always tends to be noise going on, someone to talk with. So sometimes I feel like my conversations with God should be like that but I have to remember that he's ususally the still small voice, not the loud and booming one. Sometimes I feel bad that I am not persuing God like he persues me but I know his forgiveness is constant and that he's always there so I just have to keep trying my best, maybe better than my best.

I did have one time when God prompted me to contact an old friend, he had gotten married not long before and moved away from his family for a job and I just felt like maybe he needed a friend with his new situation. We went back and forth with emails a few times and he didn't seem too interested in keeping it up so in the last one I sent, which got no reply, I let him know I was praying for him no matter what. I still think of him sometimes and send him an email but he's not replied lately.

Just wanted you all to know that I have not baled on the study. Just had a lot to do to get ready to take Adam back to school. I will be taking this with me and hope to glean some in-sight on my travels.
I'm so glad that we are doing this, I have really been struggling with making a daily commitment to the lord, praying, reading the bible, a devotion etc. I think I have the 'busyness' disease.
Anywa, hugs to all and I will check in when we are back home.
(would appreciate prayers for a safe trip and not too many tears)
Angie.
