I do know that we all can make our dreams come true but I also know that we've all probably got dreams that just aren't very realistic...aka. a pipe dream. Just in the last few days I've come up with one and I wanted to share it and maybe see if a few of you ladies would share yours too 
I'd like to buy the hardware store in my "hometown" and move back up there to run it. I have a sister that would be able to help me out on the business end and a girl-friend that would be able to help out with knowledge of a hardware. What makes it a pipe dream? I'd never be able to afford it unless I won the lottery or some ailing relative decided to will me their large estate...lol I have always thought it would be neat to own some kind of store and in a small town like that it could be quite interesting too. I would condense the store down to be more like what it used to be and use the extra space for a community kitchen where people could come in and do their canning or cook/bake something they'd sell at a store or farmers market. It would be so fun and I love the idea of being able to help the people in the community like that. So if anyone finds it within themselves to fund my pipe dream just email me ;)
What's your pipe dream? You know, that thing that you'd love to do but unless a miracle happened or you all of a sudden came into a massive amount of money it isn't likely to happen.

That doesn't sound like a pipe dream to me! You can totally do that. They have business loans exactly for that kind of thing, and you can also get investors and shareholders and stuff. You just have to believe it and actually take the steps to do it! If Mary Jane can do what she's done with her farm as a single mom, any of us can do anything we set our minds to! Yee-Haw!

Seriously isn't a pipe dream...but I know where your perspective comes from...there is an old mechanics shop in town that with a bit of money could be remodeled into a rockem sockem bakery/breakfast room/cafe. There is even drive thru access! My mom is a barista, so I would make sure that there is ample coffee to go along with all of the yummy carb creations I come up with. The only catch is that the building is a lease only deal...and I would want to own my shop...I have heard to many lease horror stories. Oh well...at least I have my farm!!

I understand how you feel about it "feeling" like a pipe dream even though it does sound attainable and do-able to some, it doesn't seem possible to you. However, that's what dreams are for...to keep us moving to new heights and desires...
I have always wanted to own a small town feed store for the same reasons. Problem is, our little hometown feed store remodeled and now it's a mini-mall/feed store with all of the decorating stuff and clothes, etc. I want a small town feed store where there's a cat sleeping on a bale of hay and fly strips hanging inside, etc. I remember the one we used to go to when I was young and those things were so vivid to me at the time.
Keep dreaming.

A dream is just a wish until you put an action behind it. Tonight you have, you have dared to beleive that it could be possible. I suggest you sit down and write it out on paper. Figure out your business plan, know the steps you would have to take to make this dream a reality and then if it is still a desire you should try to make it come true. Dont give up on yourself just because of the money. WE never know what God has in store for us if we do not try.

You could so do that!! I like your idea of the kitchen too! That is awesome! You could teach classes or just let people come and work. You could set up the hardware store on one side and a little kitchen/coffee shop on the other!

I agree.. I think a pipe dream is simply a dream that hasnt sprouted feet yet! There is a cute little book called "the dreamgiver" by Bruce Wilkensen? It is very cute but has a HUGE punch. Have you sat down and started a business plan.. what would it really look like? Then research all the possibilities.. could be "fun" to see it all actually mapped out...........Here's to dreams.

well, i guess if 'time-travel' qualifies for a PIPE-DREAM .. hmmmmm .. wonder where that came from? the 60's and 70's .. and smokin' a little sumpthin' sumpthin' illegal and the dreams that come from it? i'll have to google it!
my PIPE-DREAM would be to be able to live my life over again .. or at least to re-visit all the moments .. big ones and little ones .. to see them from my 'today eyes'.
seeeeee .. ownin' a store is a LOT easier than accomplishing MY 'pipe-dream' .. go for it gurlfren .. if not on such a grande scale if it's too expensive .. plan, make goals, put into action whatever is needed .. and GO FOR IT! xo

HA! i might not have been so far off base on that 'origin thingie' .. this is one explanation i found on the internet .. but it goes much further back than the NINETEEN 60's and 70's.
Pipe dream

An unrealistic hope or fantasy.
Origin
The allusion is to the dreams experienced by smokers of opium pipes. Opiates were widely used by the English literati in the 18th and 19th centuries. Samuel Taylor Coleridge was one of the best known users, and it would be difficult to claim that the imagery in surreal works like Kubla Khan owned nothing to opium. Lewis Carroll, although not known to be an opium user himself, makes clear allusions to drug use in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has his hero Sherlock Holmes visit an opium den - although that was for research rather than consumption.

ohhhh . .this reminds me of a STORY ... when i worked for the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration in Washington, D.C. .. i went to NARC school .. and we were 'treated' to a legal 'opium' high .. as it was lit and passed under our noses (that we might be able to identify it during 'drug busts'. HA! i walked back to my office (on a cloud) reeking of OPIUM .. it's a wonder i wasn't arrested before i got to my office!
don't remember any 'pipe dreams' coming from that experience though!

You all are so very encouraging and I appreciate that! I guess I don't know about it being possible because I have bad credit, fell into the young dumb credit card stuff but I'm now paying it back and I know it will be quite awhile before it is back to anywhere near good. I suppose I will get together some information and try to at least work it out on paper to see where it all goes. Thank you all for your encouragement!

I say Never give up on what you truly believe in. We have dreams that seems to nuts to others and I just keep going after them. I am a half glass full kinda gal, no matter how bad things get or seem to get, it will turn around or into something good. I look at everything as a lesson and truly believe things happen for a reason in my life. This happened about a year ago, hubby and I solde 75% of what we owned to start living our dreams. Everyone I know is a nay sayer around me about our lifestyle and choices but I think they are there to show us that we are doing exactly what we are supposed to be doing. We also had one big dream that didn't materialize like we wanted but ended up presenting up with another opportunity. So keep going and live the life you truly want in your heart.

| Elizabeth, I like your dream and I also sympathize with your sense that there are obstacles to attaining it. Loans are great when the plan works out, but even if the business fails the loan is still there to be paid back. I know people who own small businesses, and some of them have even financed the startup on credit cards. That is not a position I'd want to be in. But maybe one of these days, when your credit is straightened out, it will make good business sense... |

I believe sometimes when we have dreams, we loose our focus ~ or maybe, we don't see the forest for the trees type of thing. When the grown kids were in school, they had several friends who were having problems at home. I kept dreaming of having a larger home and taking in troubled kids. I knew it was going to be boys ~ I just knew. But I kept picturing mid teens. A year or so rocked on and Elijah came into our lives. He was 3 weeks old. A year later, Teamer, he was 3 days old. We now have 4 boys, so in a sense the dream came about. It was like the early dreams, were "seeds." It took a while for me to see the connection though.
Three years ago, we (dh & I) started dreaming about putting in a little store, calling it "The Local Farmacy." It would be out in the country, a rustic type building where we would offer locally grown produce, along with grass fed beef and bison, herbs, etc. We wanted it to be surrounded by gardens, enough to support a CSA project. However, things happened that stopped that. First our s-i-l (at 28) became very ill and any extra time and energy had to go to help support DD#1 and her family. That lasted over a year. But it also led to a deeper knowledge of herbal remedies and because my doctor is also my friend, she mentioned the benefit of goats' milk. The opportunity came along for us to purchase 8 dairy stock "kids" at a fraction of the normal cost. Also, during this time, we started making all natural soy candles. My thinking was the profits from the candles would help build the "farmacy."
Well, the nannies now have kids of their own and we have 5 milk customers, we could sell all the eggs we get and then some, we have the candle business and have a number of people stopping by to ask our opinion on different health related issues. This has forced me to officially start working toward a naturopathy certificate (which I see as a good thing) and DD#1 has an Ionic Foot Cleanse business. We could do more, but there just aren't enough hours in our days as it is. When I look back, we do in a sense have "the dream" it just isn't quite like I pictured it.
We do have property 12 miles out from town, that has both hwy and county road frontage. It has an old building on it, that with a lot of work could be straighten and do for a store building. This tract (3+ acres) is about a mile from our home, which sets on a 6 acre tract.
My m-i-l will be 90 this fall and we found out recently she has cancer and we are very active in her care. We homeschool the four boys. We are planning on building a larger house (worked all winter on the plans, but Granny's illness has put the plans on hold for now) and had orginially planned to start building this summer. Anyway, we have a lot going on - but I still see all this coming together at some point. A few years back, I wouldn't have been able to see it, you know? What's the old saying, "life is what happens while your making plans!"?
There is also this "age" thing. Sometimes, I think at some point we have to stop dreaming of new adventures and be realistic. But I am here for the duration, so I mignt as well make the most of it.
I said all that to say, your pipe dreams may be seeds that will grow and produce your dream, but your dream may not look exactly like you pictured, but it will be an exciting adventure and it is Your Adventure!
Go for it! Continue to dream and move just a little closer to the reality each day.

I want to open a craft store but have it in my barn on my farm property... none of which I have yet.... after visiting this site and reading all the posts I feel it might come true one day... just have to get on the ball and save.
