The other day on a PBS craft show I saw this gal using a woodburning tool on not only wood but she demonstrated it on jeans and leather as well, shoes, etc. It seems like it was heavier denims and canvas. It looked so cute and kind of funky.
So, I bought a woodburning tool at the hardware store yesterday ($13). Now I want to get started but I need some ideas for "patterns". Anyone tried this before and if so, got a good place to get some ideas for patterns? The one thing I have to find now is a piece of glass to work on...guess that's the only thing that works with the tool heating to 750 degrees at the tip.

What was the name of the show? This sounds very interesting. I bought one of the tools to make my own address sign, and yoga blocks, but was wondering what to do with it next. All I ever see made with them are wood slabs with elk on them. Not really my thing.
I get designs by searching google images. You could print pics or designs, and get an embroidery transfer pencil.

Hi Trisha, do you know I went to high school in Bonners Ferry? Going to my 30th class reunion there this summer. My parents are up there now. LOL, small world.
The show was "Paint, Paper and Crafts" with Sloan Rudder (sp?) on the Create Channel on PBS. She did show a plaque with the woodburning stuff...not my thing either. But then she went on to put designs on jeans, leather belts and straps and even some baby shoes (canvas sneakers). It was really cute! She just did freehand designs and I'm not sure I'm that brave...was thinking I could use a stencil, pencil in the design and then burn it. The tools have all sorts of tips you can buy but I just got a basic hobby kit with 4 tips and that's enough for me. I thought it would be fun to burn designs on purses I make out of old jeans, the pockets and such. I think it would look great with metal studs and such...like I said, kind of funky. I look at all of the very expensive western handbags for sale and get ideas and this will fit in nicely with that theme.

I have tried it on dear hide, works cool but you need to practice a bit. I used a pattern from an advertisement for a liqueur that I thought was cool and wanted to decorate my leather jacket for my wedding. I never did finish it. Ran out of time and besides who needs to wear leather when it is 80 out. It was fun you just need to practice to get the look you want. Look around you and it books for patterns you like. and copy them on to you fabric and start to burn. I used a cheap tool with multiple tips. I also highlighted the pattern with fabric paints.
