I was wondering if anyone might have a pattern to make a rag rug. I have heard about them and would like to try it, but I really do not know where to begin.
Any help would be appreciated!

Jessie, I just made a crocheted one using the directions from Maryjane's book. To be honest, it was sooo very easy and I am really pleased with the results. I had a ton of cotton in my stash, cut it into 1 1/2" strips using my rotary cutter and tied the strips together. There are other ways i guess to join the strips but I couldn't figure it out and the rug is cute with all the little ends sticking up! You just have to add a few extra stitches at the end of the oval shape or the rug will turn into a very large bowl! I actually did too many extra stitches and it sort of has a ruffled edge but hey...it was my first one!Oh, and you use a really fat crochet hook, not sure what size it is? Maybe Q?
If you can crochet, you will have no problem with this at all.

I tear old sheets into the strips and then sew them on my machine. then crochet. My first one was obviously my first. Instead of doing the round I am doing the second one like a dishcloth. I am self taugh at crochet and have never understood a pattern. I can look at the finished product and usually copy it. At a beginner level mind you, some of the work out there baffles me. Its stunning.

Amy,
what part of the sheet that youve torn do you sew? the little ends together to make one long strip?
sorry im not understanding that part. I love to crochet and would love to try the round ones. I dont have mary janes book so I cant really look at that pattern. Sounds wonderful that you are self taught. My grandmother taught me and Ive done a lot of different things but I must ALWAYS use a pattern. Sometimes, it stifles one's creativity.

I looked through old posts and found this from 2005. What a fab idea she gave on connecting the strips without sewing them. You could just have a basket of strips and add to the rug as you worked along.

"I have made two of these rugs, one for myself and one as a gift. They are easy to make, but the trick is to know when to increase to get it to lie flat. Too much increasing will make it wavy and too little will make it "cup". Even though I've made 2, I still sometimes have to pull out stitches and redo. There really isn't a set pattern that I use, just a single crochet all around and getting a feel for when to increase. Sorry to sound so vague, but that's how I learned to do it. As for the strips, I take two strips, which I tear, not cut, and cut a slit in one end of each, not all the way to the edge, but about a 1/4 inch from the end. You lay the slits on top of each other and pull one strip through the other so it knots together. Sorry...that's easier to show than it is to explain. I work at a 1800's outdoor, immigrant farmlife museum, Old World Wisconsin,(hence the owwlady) and this is how we make our crocheted rugs there."
