i am canning some pickles. i know that the large enamel pots are used to boil food in jars, but can you actually cook in them? i was wondering because of the enamel. i just need to know if i can cook my pickles in that type of pot, or if i need to buy a new pot. my others are too small. thanks!

my dad answered my question. he told me not to use it because the enamel can chip and get in with the pickles...not a good idea. i am using the two smaller pots i own...a pressure cooker and a dutch oven. boy, this has definitely been an experience. dividing the recipe has been interesting since i can't actually weigh the cucumbers. so far so good though. i have about 15 more minutes on the first batch and i just tested one and it tasted good.

Amy, you might want to pick up a couple of stainless steel stock pots at a thrift or yard sale. They are large, easy to clean and very handy.

yeah, i was just visiting my parents this weekend and my mom actually came home with me for a few days. when we called my dad he told us i could have one of their extra ones which is great. however, why didn't we think of that yesterday when we were still there?

that's what I need to do- and more big bowls for holding the veggies and fruit in while processing- like after we peeled all of the tomatoes- we had used every large container in the kitchen!

If you are using lime in your pickles, you will have to use the stainless steel
