i've started collecting beautiful linens and silver for both Sophia and Iszabel with their 'initial' on them. found a very sweet victorian-era hand-embroidered (white on white) pillow case with an S on it at my fav toledo antiques shoppe yesterday.
if you ever come across anything exceptionally SPECIAL with either of those intials .. and i do prefer at least a hundred years old and in near-perfect condtiion .. let me know about it ... i am willing to pay a very fair price for anything you might find.
am especially interested in beautiful JEWELRY (not costume) .. i want to have a beautiful 'trousseau' for them when they are grown.
haven't decided what to collect for lucas yet .. but when i do decide .. it will be with a vengeance that i look for whatever i choose. any great ideas? xo

Frannie, that sounds like a great idea. I love to start "collections". I have 4 grandchildren--I collect John Deere toys for the two boys and paper weights for the 9 year old granddaughter. The other granddaughter is only 9 months old, so I have started anything for her yet. I also get each one of them an uncirculated silver dollar each year. I'm planning on doing that until they are each 21 before I give them to them. (I hope they don't blow them on something--probably will have to trade them in for a tank of gas!!!!!)

i collected tiny vintage 'angels' for a Christmas tree for my grand-daughter, jennifer ... i also got her a precious vintage tree to put them on. i bought one (or set of them) each christmas .. i still have them for her .. will give them to her when she has her first home.
i collected antique teddy bears for my oldest grandson ... but he lost interest in them pretty quickly when he became a 'teenager' ... hopefully, someday, he will have children and will want to give them to them. so far, i've mostly given sofia pottery barn toys (the pink kitchen set .. it is ADORA./BLE ... and 'AmericanGirls' BITTY BABY and accessories.... i collectg 'lambs' for great grandson Andrew LAMBert .. he will probably also lose ingterest in about 10 years! havne't done a 'collection' of anything particular for lucas yet .. i do buy him lots of books!
i love the John Deere toys .. and paper weights is such a sweet idea too!
i'm loving my apron .. i let wednesday wear one of them at our gathering today. xo

Frannie -- For Lucas, the first idea that popped into my head was pocketwatches or timepieces. I like the idea of a boy in this modern age -- what with cell phones, digital clocks and everything else, Ipods, etc. -- having a time keeper from the past. And it would be great for him to have one of Gaa Frannie's pocketwatches in his pocket at his first Inauguration!

What a wonderful idea. I will be on the lookout for such things. Take care and best of luck with this. Marcy

katie-ell, that is a great idea for a masculine collection! I gave my hubby a gold pocket watch for his 50th birthday, and I found it through a jeweler in Chicago who sold antique timepieces on the internet. It was a Rockford timepiece and he is from there.
I see beautiful pockeet watches at antique shows, many of them engraved.
I collected sterling silver Buttercup for my daughter as she was growing up and on her wedding day, I gave her an entire set of 8. Myself, I have only ever had silverplate, and I wanted her to have something nicer. Many of the pieces were vintage, and some engraved, but all the same pattern. I even bought her a vintage silver chest.
This idea of Frannie's has sparked in me the desire to do something similar for my grandchildren. I made each of them a quilt and a needlework first christmas ornament, and now I have found out I have to make a third quilt and ornament! So in addition, I can start looking for something lovely to collect for them. Hm......and Frannie, I will keep a lookout for you!

Don't get discouraged that they lost interest as teenagers. When they are older and sane again and have wives and families, they will appreciate what you have done and their families will also. I love the pocket watch and fob ideas for the boys. I may do that for my boys as well. My 'engineering' boy who also took things apart and rearranged them, also loses things in thin air so even though he is 18 now, I will hold on to his treasures till a later point in his life.
