We are vegetarians at our house but we have pets that arent. However I could never stop hating the gross rawhides that my dog LOVES to chew between farrier visits. (horse and dog owners, you know what Im talking about!) I also know that those rawhides are filled with dangerous preservaives and things that are bad for my dog. So I was on a mission to find something better.
I slice a well scrubbed yam or sweet potato thickly and dry it out in a low over overnight or you could use a food dehydrator. my dog loves them plain but I made them as christmas gifts and marinaded them in low salt chicken stock before dehydrating. Just slice them smaller if you have smaller dogs. They are healthy because they are full of fiber, they are all natural and you can feel good about giving them! (and they are so cheap!)

Sarah that is A Great Idea!!! One of our dogs has allergies so our Vet suggested we put both dogs on dogfood that just contains sweet potato and fish. Sometimes I cook up a fresh sweet potato .... chill it in the refrigerator and slice it to give them as treats but >>>>> I love this idea of drying or dehydrating them!!! I will definately be doing this!!! Thanks!

I've found all kinds of recipe's for natural dog treats, but I never saw one that used JUST a sweet potato! What a GREAT idea!! I'm sure my little dogs would LOVE them! Thanks for sharing Sarah! Hugs ~~~ Tracy

Wonderful idea!!! I'll have to test them on my pit mix, Finnigan, the official "chew hound" but they sound wonderful!!!! I will make some up this weekend, as we are nearing the end of our "stash".
