(no offense, Jeff Foxsworthy):)

I was cleaning out the van today and was thinking.....people might know I was a farmgirl at heart if they saw the bucket, bags, and shovel I carry in the back. You never know when you might need to dig something up or someone might offer to share a cutting or something. Gotta be prepared. :)

What about you? Got any telltell signs of being a farmgirl?

You might be ar farm girl if: you get jazzed every time you talk about your laying hens

your nails are cut way short to keep the dirt out and your palms have toughened up from wielding a shovel and hoe

you eagerly anticipate the new year's seed catalogs

You might be a farmgirl if:

You get excited over farm equipment for you birthday

A fancy apron makes for a fancy outfit

Cowgirl boots are the universal shoe for any outfit

The smell of horse/cow poop remind you of fond memories

Getting up at 5 in the morning is normal of the weekends

You can stretch a 5 dollar meal to feed 20 people

You prefer animals to people

When i was younger and not overwhelmed with fibromyalgia and arthritis. I used to keep a bucket or two, a shovel, a trowel and some plastic bags in the back of my car, a farmgirl should be prepared for everything. I occasionally dug things up from the side of the road, and was always prepared to accept anything offered to me. Last week I got so excited about my garden I decided I could dig just a few big holes. I am now a retired hole digger, but it is great to know others are prepared ......Karin

You might be a farm girl if---you go to the store and somebody picks hay out of your hair and you in turn pick hay off their shirt. MB

I made a comment earlier but now I know I am a farm girl---I been out fixing fence since my last post and then I noticed the ponies were where they shouldn't be. they pushed through a gate and tore down the fence. It was just me and the fence thinking not too kind thoughts about them rascally ponies. MB

You know you're a farmgirl when folks ask you questions like,

"You made this jam?" "This lettuce came from your garden? Seriously??" and my personal favorite,"Wow, you actually grow garlic? I didn't even know it came from the ground!!!"

And, you know you're a farmgirl when, at the end of the day (when you've scrubbed the back of your neck AND your feet real good), you sink down into the cool sheets under an old (or new) quilt and fall quickly, and contentedly asleep, and get up tomorrow and do it all again.

you might be a farmgirl, if your trashcan is empty and your compost pile full.

Linda,
I would have to repeat what you said, if you love the smell of dirt,

If the excitement for the afternoon is cleaning out the bin where you have your baby chicks in the living room....

your daily walk is walking around your flower and garden beds to see what is showing itself, and the smell makes you grin.....

listening to the quiet moments

Thanks, Ada Mae...that's sure how it is for me--glad to know it's the same for you, Kentucky girl :) Nothing stellar, but I do love this life!!

Carol Sue, if that's the excitement in your afternoon, I'm with ya, girl! You couldn't keep me out of that living room!

I love all of your comments. All the girls at work talk about their nail appointments and if they get a broke nail (oh my!)....
I am the same way as some of you farmgals...I love to feel the dirt and get my hands all into it when I am working in the garden.

I might be a farmgirl if...
I moved away from Southern Missouri, on the Arkansas State line 20 years ago..now 20 years later people still tell me I have a Southern accent...and I say things that are "Southern".

LOL is that a farmgirl?

I lived on a farm back then. :-)

I tell my son (because my mother told me this)
"I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck"

and I know what measurement a "peck" is.

I think it's about a bushel and a half.

You are hot & sweaty(like I am all this weekend) & instead of taking a quick shower, you just strip down & hose off. No one can see, so who cares, right?!
& you pass fencelines of honeysuckle & think, "Man my goats would have a field day with that!"
& you clean all of the cut grass off of the John Deere bush hog to put around your tomato plants or in the compost bin.
or, you find a new wild plant that you haven't seen before & go straight for the herb encyclopedia to see if it is edible or useful.
or, you get excited when you buy a new case of canning jars at the grocery cause they were on sale.
or, your entire kitchen table, plus every card table or flat surface in the house, has dirt, seeds, watering cans & plant labels no matter how well you try to keep them on one spot. Not a chance!
or, your feet need to be scrubbed at least twice in the shower, & then while relaxing before bed, you look down & they still have ground in dirt in the crevices.

If you get a heart shaped wasp nest for Valentine's Day, a wheel barrow for your birthday, a new raised bed for Christmas, and it was just what you wanted.

I knew I was a farmgirl when I moved to Louisville for college and would drive by the stockyards just to smell cow manure--it reminded me of home.

You might be a farmgirl if...

--> You refer to your apron as your domestic goddess cape.
--> You daydream of planting and cooking and sewing and ironing... (yup, that's what I'm doing when I get that distant look in my eyes...)
--> You totally love dolls, even when ""normal"" people give you weird looks like 'aren't you a bit old for that??'.
