From what we hear about the predicted prices of oil and gas this winter (and is there any chance that if our government says the price will be high, the oil companies won't meet those expectations?), we are thinking of investing in a pellet stove. I like the idea of low pollution and also of burning a recycled or renewable resource.
We live in a big old drafty Victorian (no fireplace, sadly...long story but the short version is that the only affordable options are free-standing stoves), and we both work at home. So my husband spends all day in his office--a regular bedroom sized room--on the second floor, and I am in the attic which is quite drafy but glorious. I did not want to insulate & sheet rock and hide the rafters, so it's my own fault that it's so cold!
But anyway, turning on our big forced air natural gas furnace on the ground floor makes no sense because we end up trying to heat the whole house when we are each basically just in our own little rooms.
So we were thinking of a small pellet stove for his office and a larger one for my attic. I have a couch up here so on cold winter nights, we could snuggle up in front of it and listen to the rain on the roof, rather than going downstairs and turning on the furnace.
Would love to hear your comments & thoughts about pellet stoves if you have any.

| Well, I have nothing to offer re: the pellet stove, but I went to your blog and now I'll never get up from this computer. I have a chicken thing, but don't have any right now. God knows I want them, so He'll work it all out one day! Just not in a place where we can have them now, but I just love them! And I am enjoying your site. Thanks! |

We have a pellet stove in our family room, the rest of the house has radiant heat. I like and dislike the pellet stove. It does heat up the room well, but I don't like the noise of the fan. As we don't have a fireplace it is a substitute, with a small flame to look at. It is much cleaner than wood heat too. My only concern in your attic, I love attics, is that your heat would just go out the roof. Perhaps you could put up real wood paneling in the area that the stove would be to help retain heat. You would still have the rafters in the rest of the attic, and the wood paneling would still be natural. Just a thought. Julia

Amy, I am with Julia, I like and dislike the corn/pellet stove that we installed last year. We have always had a wood stove and since DH developed allergies to wood, of all things, we had to find an alternative heat source. Depending on how cold it gets there, you may or may not like it. The heat is sufficient for us until it gets to the low teens and then it is just so cold that the stove cannot handle the whole house.
The constant blower is another annoyance, and if we lost power, we would also lose our heat. The woodstove is so much more comfortable, reliant and yummy that even though the allergies are a pain, we are putting it back into our laundry room as an auxillary and i will handle the wood.
Julia is right also about the heat rising and leaving your home, is there a space for a ceiling fan, which would help move the air back down?
