Hi gals, I am looking at dolls on ebay and see the Madame Alexander dolls are very expensive. Tho they have older nude ones much cheaper.
Do you know if they are good quality and would be worth $20 or so nude and used? I'd like to practice sewing and designing clothes for them and add to my collection of dolls.
I love dollies!

My friend Helen has several Madame Alexander dolls that were given to her by a doting aunt when she was a child. They are lovely dolls. It is a well known very expensive, high quality doll. I'd think $20 nude is very reasonable...Karin

Thanks for the info. I think it would be fun to design and measure for clothes for that size....it would be nice to have one really nice quality doll. I'm going to get some cheapie ones too. LOL
I figure fatter than Barbie....I have lots of Barbie patterns.
Wish me luck...I think it must be a gambler in me...LOL

Hi Linda,
I use to collect M.A.'s back in the early 70's and have nearly 2 dozen of the 7" dolls and 1- 14" Alice in Wonderland doll...
I have mine in their origional box w/tissue & booklets attached to their wrist...I love them dearly and can not even think of parting w/them.
You are right, they are perfect for using as 'mini manniquins"....have fun sewing, oh, and sometimes you can get lucky and find the simple stands that hold them in a standing position.

When Missy was 5 I worked at a department store in the toy department. I bought her two MA 7" dolls - Little Red Riding Hood and Heidi. I think that she still has them although they are showing some wear from the years. I have always loved MA dolls and wanted Scarlett O'Hara so badly but it was too expensive.

So it looks like she would be a very nice quality. The small ones from McDonalds were very nice and I kept some of them, but thought she shouldn't be expensive for the larger. I think I'm just not used to buying things, but the American Girl 18 inch dolls are about $40-$50 for used, nude and older.
I don't think Barbie's clothes will come close...she's such a skinny skinny and womanly shape! I could shrink the 18" American Girl pattern down 50% or just cut around them to be smaller, don't ya think?

Hi Linda - if you have a printer/copier that enlarges and reduces, it is fun to make doll clothes patterns on it since you can grow or shrink them til they are just right. Bigger dolls are more fun than Barbies because they aren't so hard to get your fingers inside. I bought a "naked baby" at the "Granny's Attic" of our church carnival last fall, and love going down to my sewing room and making clothes! You're never too old to play with dolls.

Thanks Susan, good information. I have made Barbies before and it was a challenge but I could do it. My hand and fingers are small.
Larger is so much easier.
I don't have a printer here but have one at work that I may take the time to use..... I think I can enlarge by hand also. I am glad you like to play with dolls too.....I have known many women who collect but not many who sewed or fixed them.
I would love to learn repair...I bet it's not hard at all. Simple repair like arms, legs, eyes, hair...but not painting.

Sue i think thats a great Idea! especially If you can find a Picture of what one of the REAL outfits should look like!! Linda, You can print a picture of it & try to replicate THAT one! What a great Idea!!
i like tehse Dolls Too but don't have any of the regular "TRUE" Dolls..
But (Ok.. yes this is crazy..) When Mcdonalds comes out with their Madame Alexander Dolls I try to make sure & get them!!
I am so nuts the entire time that deal is going on..!
My poor husband has to eat happy meals for Lunch till I get all my Dolls!!!
can't wait to see pictures of your new Dear's if you decide to pick them up girl!!!

I used to have them, the Little Women. I had Jo, Beth, Marmie and Meg.
I had to toss them due to they got nasty in a flood.
I have always wanted the Tin Man one, but can't justify the expense.
I do have Molly, the American Girl Doll, I just love her! She was a Christmas gift from my Mom a few years back-I cried like a baby when I opened her, she was a complete surprise.
Mom buys me an outfit every Christmas, and sometimes for my birthday too. It is always a surprise to see what Molly will get next.
I am hinting for her to get me Molly's companion doll, Emily next year.
Her Highness has Samantha and Nellie, so Mom and I usually end up getting something for one of them as well.
I love dolls!!

wow...you make me want to get an authentic American Doll too. I'm working on that. Naked used ones are $30 or so, not bad if it is in good shape. So far I just have a couple dolls 18 inch to wear the clothes.
I just won the little Madame Alexander dolly. She was inexpensive and blind. Yes, her eyes are out and she has empty holes for eyes. I'll put some dark glasses on her until I figure out how to fix her eyes. I'm going to do what I can because I found out a doll hospital online charges minimum $25.00 plus shipping...and they won't say how much more until after they see the doll...
I'll get some super glue and red-neck fix her first!
Kathie, I have seen some dolls your type for auction. You'd like them for sure they are green or blue faced and scary! LOL

We have a Madame Alexander doll for sale in the shop (Historical Society consignment) -- it's 'Poor Cinderella', in original box, complete, and priced in the $40 range. She's quite a pretty doll and I can imagine easy to sew for. No takers yet, here. It just takes the right person to find the right item . . . .
Have fun with your new doll, Linda. Did you get her on Ebay? Were you aware that the eyes were out? Can you buy new eyes online and fix yourself? Hope so. In any event, I'm sure you'll enjoy making new clothes for her, etc.
