Hey gals. I didn't know if anyone else deals with this. My ankles swell up pretty bad on both sides, but worse on my right side due to having blood clots in the past in that leg. I'm having to wear those ugly compression stockings (but I haven't been good at wearing them every day). I just had another doppler scan and it just shows the old clots (they will never leave according to the doctors). I definitely keep my legs propped up as much as possible, but there are days that I can't even get a shoe on for it being so swollen. They put me on water pills and that's just forcing me to go to the bathroom and the swelling is still there.
Soooo...I'm reaching out to my fellow farmgirls. What do you guys do for swollen ankles/feet??

Jessica- It seems counter intuitive, but actually drinking more water can help your body flush away edema induced swelling which is what it sounds like you might have. Try drinking slightly more than your daily amount of water. You will have to go to the bathroom more for a couple of days and then your body will even out.

I agree with Alee. I had some swelling during my pregnancy and I drank a ton of water and it helped. Also, stretching and light walking to get the fluid flowing away from the swelled spot. Of course, propping up your feet and soaking them in cooler water helps too. I just went to the pool and that seemed to help.

Thanks guys. Well I was drinking a lot of water (8-10 glasses a day) and the doctor said to actually cut back a glass or two, but make sure that I'm not dehydrating...mainly because I'm retaining more than releasing. (I know, I'm weird.) I never add salt to anything and I definitely watch the sodium content on labels. You would be shocked to see how much salt is in some stuff. Here is the funny thing, I have a salt & pepper collection but we don't even have salt in the house. haha.
Hmm....never thought bout soaking them in cold water. I will try that too.
Thanks guys!

Jessica-
Have you started putting pillows under your feet at night? I had to do that when I was pregnant. It takes a week or two to get used to- but it helps and then you get all the "feet up" time your doctor could want! :D

I use one of those foam wedges. Sometimes my legs ache, so an hours worth of leg propping while reading or watcing t.v. helps
I'm predisposed to varicose veins so I know how you feel. And same as my mom, I can tell if something has been too high in sodium cause my ankels and fingers will swell too
Do you exercise at all? That definitely makes you shed water! |

Jessica, Have you had your kidneys checked? It sounds odd, but if you have that much water retention and are taking diuretics, I think I would have my blood and urine checked. Ask your doc. Also, with the diuretics and drinking a lot of water, your potassium could be low.
