I must have been exposed to some poison ivy in my yard. We have it around some elms. If I don't find it, it finds me. I am highly sensitive to it. I have a bad rash on both ankles and lower shins. It is driving me nuts! I try not to scratch but at night in my sleep I must rub my ankles together. Ivarest isn't working, or calamine. Any remedies?

If I keep a green bough in my heart, the singing bird will come.

I use apple cider vinegar/witch hazel combination diluted a bit with distilled water. Works like a charm
You can also add lavender essential oil, if you have some.

I am terribly allergic to poison oak and sumac. Last time I had blisters over an inch wide and a half inch tall - GROSS!!! It took a steroid for me to get rid of it, my body wasn't healing on its own.

For temporary relief - hot water. Run it over the poison reaction as hot as you can stand for 10 minutes or so. Hurts more at first - but oh, after a moment, blessed relief! It lasts about an hour.

Jenny- I am the poisonivy sumac magnet and it just spreads over me like wildfire. I usually have to get antihistamine and steroid shots to keep it in check or it becomes systemic. Have you tried taking an antihistamine capsule at bedtime ( like Benedryll , etc...) so you can sleep? I usually prefer an organic approach but sometimes you have to go a step beyond. We also have something called IVYDRY that works very well at getting rid of the sapping part(yuk) if you can find that and it is miles better than the two you mentioned. Scratching with you in sympathy...

with a happy heart

Aveeno bath helps, too. You may try an antihystamine (sp?) if you are not opposed to taking some sort of medication.

I be living with the itch. Had a friend bring me a wreath with berries on to make me feel better about fall and Wilma's rubbles. I picked it up before realising these are lovelies are ivy berries.I didn't touch it with my feet but I got blisters on my feet where I had it the last time. Is that normal?

BLEACH! It stings like fire, but I'd rather sting than itch any day.

Something else to keep in mind when you wash....do it in COLD water. Warm water spreads the resin and is why the rash shows up in unusual places even days after the exposure.

One other remedy to look up. TECNU This is to be applied after exposure too. The sooner the better. It won't completely get the rash away, but will make it less. This isn't herbal by any means, but sometimes a tough problem demands a tough solution.

Luckily I have never had it go systemic. That's the worst!

Most of my summer woes are with chiggers Talk about agony!
