has been busy ... jus' wanted to show you the latest 'rag chillun' .. they aren't up for adoption .. headin' for the 'county fair'.

OLIVIA MAE

OLIVIA MAE

It has been discovered that Olivia Mae has a tendency to be .. well .. quite frankly .. a little 'vain' about her bright red hair!
The chile’ simply cannot pass a looking glass without stopping to admire herself.
She is a bit ‘prissy’ and loves hairbows, bright colors and sometimes pinches her cheeks a tad too much to ‘rouge them’ extra bright!

She does have problems with sittin’ still for very long at Sunday-go-to-Meetins ..
and is always quite fidgety during morning and evening prayers.
Despite all this, she is a good learner and will not twitch an inch if she has a book in front of her face.

Quite ‘dramatic .. she will often gather scarves from the Missionary box and feathers from the turkey pen and dress up and delight the other chilluns with poetry and renditions from Little Women, Anne of Green Gables and she is especially fond of anything written by Jane Austen!

MAXINE MAVIS

wuz discovered sittin’ quietly on the deacon’s bench in the kitchen when Sister Mercy arose early one morning and headed out the back door to feed the chickens and gather some breakfast eggs for the orphans.
Maxine Mavis shyly looked up into Sister Mercy's gentle eyes
and said she really preferred being called "Maxie" .. cuz' that's whut
her Great Grand Maw-Maw allus called her.

Sister noticed that she had a string of buttons and a tattered
little ‘sewie ditty’ bag … filled with more buttons from worn out clothing and tucked into her generous pocket are threads, and 'bits and bobs' of olde quilts, a rag ball or two and other needful things.
Mos' dear of all is a snippet of pretty blue tatting that usta' adorn
her momma's Sunday nightie. It's kinda' tattered and torn .. but Maxie said she 'never much minded' .. cuz it smelt of her own sweet momma ..
"violette toilet water" and "baking bread".
She quietly bowed her head and whispered
"the smell of it makes me feel remembered"
She slowly showed Sister all her treasures that had been saved from the ‘big flood’ that came through Green County, Kentucky and had took off her dear momma and poppa who she said wuz’ now floatin’ down heaven’s river.

Maxine Mavis so hopes that a 'sewin'- lovin' momma will want her!
(and preferably someone who doesn't live too near-by a river)

SHORTENIN' BREAD

Shortenin' Bread has an envelope and rag heart tucked into her apron pocket. The initials and name . . . D.E.B. Grubb is stitched onto the pocket. Shortenin' Bread tells the sisters this story of it:

"Mah gran-pappy wuz brot here on a boat .. he wuz mos'ly wrapped in chains when he warn't rowin' thet boat haf-way crost' thet big river!

He was sole on a 'auction block". All us chilluns larnt them words when we wuz mos' beginning to talk. We'uns would lay in our beds fallin' asleep to the stories an' songs of our people.

Gran-pappy had a wife an' five chilluns on Africa .. but they all got lef' behind an' he never seed 'em agin' in his whole lifetime.

He never much ever talked ov 'em .. but I know'ed when he set on the front porch smokin' his pipe .. wif a sad-eyed, fur-away look on his face .. he wuz back on Africa - bein' wif 'em agin.

Gran-pappy worked on a cotton plantation an wuz' honest', hard-workin' and' strong.

He African name wuz changed by his marster to Jarge Farmer. Jarge wuz afta' the' fus' Pres'dent .. Farmer cuz' he wuz' good at farmin' chores.

But he chose his own name (rightly used wif' respect by t'other slaves) to . . . D.E.B. Grubb .. all strong-minded men Gran-pappy liked from the Good Book.
Daniel
Elijah
Bartholomew
an' GRUBB afta' Parson Grubb

at the Ebenezer Zion Holy Ghos' Baptist Charch, whar he met up wif my Gran-mammy. But soon commenced that fightin' t'wixt and t'ween bruthers an' cuzins. I heered tell it wuz called by the name of "Th' Civil War" .. well .. i sho' don't beleeve thar wuz' anything near CIVIL to it ef'fen you ax me!

Afta' Mr. Linkin settled it .. mah grans wuz 'freemen' an' they commenced farmin' fo' theyselves an' lotsa' chilluns they commnced to birthin' an lovin'.

Gran-mammy, she stitched Gran-pappy's chosen name onto her pillow-slip so's she would dream of him ever night after he headed on off for Glory Land.

A coupla' yars afta' .. as Gran-mammy lay a'-dyin' an' shoutin' thet she seed Gran-pappy standin' at the Pearly Gates wif' arms outstretched .. she took thet piller-slip and give it to me.

By now, it wuz time-weary with holes and tatters .. but i tuk the bits an' pieces an' made me a apron and sewed Gran-pappy's name on th' pocket. Ah made a little heart an' tucked it to a paper pocket wif' a lock of they hair in it. Someday ah'll give it to my new momma whut adopts me.

SUGAR PIE

SUGAR PIE .. another one of those little 'Sugarbucket Cuzins'
spilled grape juice all over her frilly white apron .. and it had
to be put into the rag bag .. but she commenced to sewin' up a
new one .. this one she determined would have a "pocket" big
enough so that she could carry her dolly Miss ANNA around with her
and close to her heart!

Sugar Pie is the 'momma-ist' of all the cuzins. She don't mind a'tall changing dirty diapers or wiping snotty noses. She makes sure that their little bellies are filled, their fears are shoo-ed away and that their hair is brushed a hunnerd strokes a day! She gives 'em waves or braids .. but never pays much mind to her own.

Sugar Pie loves Kentucky and she loves America .. fiercely!

========
Sugar Pie done gone and 'spoilt' her lovely white apron (below)
by spilling grape juice all over it ... sooo .. she made up a 'new one'
(one that would be big enough to hold her little dolly Anna!)

RUBY DIAMOND
Ruby Diamond could sit and sew and stitch samplers well into each night. She has a necklace of olde buttons and a special 'mater pyn pyllow' that her Ain't Flossie Jazz-mine gave to her when first she could hold a needle without losing track of it.

Ruby told the sisters: "Ain't Floss wuz the fus-borned girl chile that Gran-mammy popped out onto dis earf .. a good 20 yars an' 20 chilluns befo' mah own mammy came along. An' mammy warn't the las' born .. they wuz 3 mo' come afta' her. An ever one of them chiles lived right up to they grown-up yars! Ain't Flosss warn't much old'rn her own mammy!

One morning, while collecting (and counting) hen eggs, Ruby told Sister Frances Catherine: "Ah larn't to do my 'sums' by countin' stitches an' already, ah kin make it up to foty-fo' without gittin' all confixicated."

Ruby would love to come to your home and help with clothes mending, quilt-making -- and she especially likes making rag dolls!

TATER

Little Tater .. being the oldest of the four Sugarbucket family tol' Sister Mercy the story of how they come to be orphans.
"All far and brimstone done hit our little holler down ta' Hazard, Kaintuckee way .. We'uns wuz all visitin' and playin' hop scotch and hoops .. and wif our li'l rag babies .. an. ah wuz about to set the milkin' stool table wif tee and mo-lasses cookies .. when thet unfotunate wind done winded down the valley and hit lak Kingdom had Come. I wuz the fust to see dem dark clouds and hear thet freight train roar thet comes alongside of the wind!
I done grabs the littlest cuzins whilst Sugar Pie, bein' the next in size .. grabbed up the dollies and tea pots .. and we hit lickey split down ta' the root cellar .. which shorely mos' pos'tively kept us from all bein' blown to Chiner or somewheres on t'other side of dis here earf!
All our po' pappies and mammies wuz out workin' in the t'baccy fields and we ain't none of us heered a word frum 'em since!"
It took quite a while to settle these precious little ones down .. but under the loving care of the Sisters at the Foundlin' Home .. they are startin' to get a little cheerier and back to life again. Sister Mercy promised them they'd all gather together again with all their kith and kin on a big 'ole front porch on t'other side of heaven with milk and honey for their tee!
And that for now .. they needed to keep each other's spirits up and live forward.
Tater has found some solace in the lovely tea sets and pretty china dishes that are set out on the big table at each meal. She has chosen her favorite cup and saucer with pretty flowers on it .. and Sister Mercy told her she could keep it forever. Tater is sarting to sing again .. and even ventures a little further from the orphan house with each passing week.
Sister Frances Catherine even found some pretty blue bows for her hair and makes sure to tell her happy stories at bedtime, tuck her in, give her a kiss on the forehead and promise her that a sweet momma will come along again to love her.

THESE LITTLE ONES WERE CREATED USING ALL VINTAGE FABRICS. the little black chilluns' bodies were made from an antique 'coffin cover'.

they are actually going to a 'show' .. Sister Sugarbucket has been asking me to pleeeeeeeeeeeze save some for her shoppe and a show she is doing. I'm sure they will find some dear little 'treasures' to embellish themselves with.

IF they don't get adopted .. mayhaps they will appear in the MarketPlace and on the Foundling Home registry lookin' for a momma.

Jus' wanted to share them with you. xo, Sister Frances Catherine

JOSSIE JOLEEN

Quiet, shy and a bit of an introvert, Jossie is usually found off by herself
sittin' on a sunny rock in the garden singing to the birds and softly talking to the butterflies. (She keeps a full supply of bird-seed and bread-crumbs in her little neck purse).

After careful consideration, Sister Mercy has determined that Jossie is indeed a little bit of a 'fraidy cat' and somewhat of an 'alarmist' .. and mos’ terribly frightened of spiders and snakes … and on occasion has turrible 'nightshakes' that wake her up in a bit of a panic .. (a warm cup of hot chocolate almost always calms her down!)

Sister is looking for a momma for Jossie who is somewhat mild and soothing … and understandin’ … who might be able to help her know the beauty of ‘god’s little crawly creatures.
It has surely been noted that she is not the least bit 'a-feered' of ‘birds, bees and butterflies'. Anything with ‘wings', she sez, reminds her of 'angels'.

thanks deeeeerie! i jus' finished THREE more .. jus' lookin' for 'apron' fabric for them right now in the 'missionary box'.

i'll show and tell 'em soon's i finish.

i wish there were enough interested gurlfrenz down here to have a 'doll club' like 'up nawth' .. we had betwen 25 and 100 members at any given time. (many were from 'off' and often travelled long distances to come take classes from wonderful primitive doll teachers that i brought to our club). xo

oh .. and ya' know .. in that entire TEN YEARS .. i never ever heard of any other 'cloth doll club' that catered to PRIMITIVE dolls and brought teachers to teach PRIMITIVE techniques. i'd surely still travel to such classes to take them .. jus' for the fun and friendship of dollmakers. i swear .. i've had more fun with my group of dolly friends with more giggles than any other group i've belonged to in my lifetime. i miss them!

YEA.. I am just "sick" that I will miss you guys as I am so close to Moscow ID - when you are down there May 3rd.. I read that thread to late....................But next time I suppose. I am in South Central WA. Washington"wine Country", But I lived in The Palouse for 12 plus years.. So that area (Moscow) feels like home...Anyway.... Love the babies...hey, here is a story that you might like..... My mom was murdered when I was 8 (ok, that part is icky), But I was given a rag dollie by some caring adult during that time.. and she stayed with me - up until a couple years ago - when the box she was in was lost in a move.. So while some babies are collected as well a collectable.. Some are just "friends".. I love that you make them...What a ministry - not just a talent....

rene .. so very sorry to hear of your mom's sad story .. i, too, lost my own mom at about age 7 .. only different circumstances. some day we may gather and share stories.

perhaps your dolly has found someone else that needed comforting a couple years ago. . did you ever read the precious book HITTY: Her First 100 Years? i do believe you would love it! Dollies often have much longer lives than humans do. xo

OPHELIA

A mos' serious-minded little orphan chile … and from the very first day of arriving at the Foundlin’ Home, she became the 'caretaker' of the ‘littlest of these’ (as she refers to the younger chillun).

She enjoys being in the kitchen and can often be found surrounded by a dozen or more little ones stirring up a cake, preparing fruit for pies or rolling out a batch of cookie dough (sugar cookies bein' her mos’ favorite!)

She sings to them and tells them riddles and proverbs … she is often heard to repeat to them sumpthin’ she sez her dearly departed Gran-Maw-Maw allus told her:

'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'

Ophelia Jean believes everyone to be beautiful.

CORDELIA

May it be forthrightly told up front that it seems little Cordelia was born with a bit of the 'wild child' in her and can tend to be a little ‘bossy’ with the older rag chillun at the orphanage.

Constantly dancing to the tune of a distant drummer .. she does not concentrate easily.

Her ‘free spirit’ delights the younger orphans .. as her anctics make them giggle and quite frankly, she sometimes even leads them into a little mischief. (Sister Frances Catherine found the cookie jar up-turned and milk spilled on the kitchen table this very morning!)

Constantly seeking ‘fun’ … there does not seem to be a ‘serious bone’ in the child’s body!

Cordelia June will need a momma with a loving but slightly stern demeanor ..

But it sincerely is hoped that her ‘love of life ’ is not diminished a bit!

KLEDITH CHARLEEN

KLEDITH CHARLEENis a bit of a slow learner in her spellin’ and sums.. but she knows what’s important in life.
She has a kind heart .. and allus let’s the other chillun at the orphanage have ‘firsties’ .. never mindin’ goin’ last.

One day recent, Sister Frances Catherine wuz headin’ out to milk ‘ol Bossy for morning porridge when she looked a-yonder up the hill .. and down came trudin’ a little angel-chile. Sister hurried up the hill to hold her hand and lead her gently to the garden. She didn’t want all the ‘little ones’ crowding around this fragile little soul until she had made her welcome and unafraid.

Kledith Charleen spied blue birds on the lilac bush in the garden and hurried over to them and just plunked right down in the midst and commenced to cryin’!

With her little heart breaking, she sobbed and told Sister Frances Catherine that she wuz ‘an orphan chile with narry no kith or kin’ -- t’other than her very own dear momma and papa who had been kilt in a mos’ unfortunate accident involvin’ a upturned cart, a ornery ‘ole mule an’ a big slide down a mountainside. She could utter no more as Sister took her into her arms and rocked her until she fell asleep in her arms.
Kledith Charleen needs a gentle home and patientmomma to love her.
(Sister Mercy is also hopin’ her new momma or papa will be able to help her with her spellin’ and sums.)
