Todays newspaper ad for Dillards shows "patio dresses" for only $50! Some are pull over, others have the zip front. yep, every fashion item eventually comes back to haunt us. My mother would be right in style. I'm wondering if there are any still in her clothing I have in storage. Madras, ticking, huge flower prints... |

I thought mumus were gathered at the neck making them big a full. I remember caftans..men wore them too. Caftens were a big square with opening at the neck and opening on side seams for arms. I made one for my husband in an India type of print. He wore it at home. Aren't mumus what the heavier women wear in Hawaii in big bright flowers? I wish they both would come back...very comfy!

These are gathered below the yoke and of course have pockets-for the requisite tissue or hanky and whatever else a lady might need with her at all times. Maybe the cell phone these days? I was just surprised to see them in a Dillards ad and the price is crazy. I guess if the "high end" dept stores are selling them, they're back. |

My sweet sweet, Aunt Evelyn in Florida wears them--she also lives in a pink art deco house with her original 50's teal sectionaly and barkcloth palm tree patterned curtains:) Almost every photo I have of her and her family at weddings or family gatherings, she's wearing one!!!

My late mom LOVED them. LOVED THEM! They are still hanging in her closet...maybe I should bring them home with me.

My dear MIL has worn mumus around the house for years. She has such pretty ones. Some are pretty enough to wear to the grocery store and she has. Mind you she is such a prissy little lady that when she wears a mumu she includes matching cute earrings, lipstick and shoes. When my FIL was still alive he did not think they were so cute. I love them! Yes they do remind me of " way back in the day".

Ive seen, but don't think I've bought any of those vintage muu-muu patterns. Might have come in a package with others, long way from sorting patterns. More important sorting and purging first...I can actually walk into the sewing room, but the boxes of books, magazines and who knows what are now in the living room. Yikes. |

My Mom has been wearing muu-muus ever since I can remember. Last year for mother's day I made her 3 new ones. Sometime in the past there must have been a pattern, because I know she used to make them back in the 70's. The paperpattern is gone. I tore apart one of her favorite muu-muus and used it to trace a pattern on some muslin. The old Muu-Muu was so thread bare it was falling apart when I dismantled it. She was thrilled to death with the mother's day gift. You would have thought I gave her gold!

I remember muu muus were gathered full at the yoke and in big bright flowers, all from Hawaii. They probably still wear them there?

you gals got me so darn curious that I found this online. I remember a higher yoke and bigger flowers. A larger woman made it look big and full...of course my memories are from being 9 years old. LOL

I remember my sis-in-law making and wearing a mu-mu that was like a strapless dress with elastic around the top and under the bust, gathered and very full. That was 1964 and I was 6!

Linda, the first photo (pretty fabric!) seems to have be high waisted. The second one, free flowing from the yoke, is more of what I would consider to be a muu muu. The main idea, for at least some wearers, is to be full and loose, and not require a bra....and cover up whatever was "loose". |
