One of my daughters stepped on a nail yesterday that was sticking up in a board. She's up to date on tetanus so I'm not worried about that, but she's having a lot of discomfort (understandably!) when she walks around. It's a little swollen, but not infected that I can see. Anyone have any ideas as to pain relief for that area or anything to speed along the healing of it?

The only thing I could think of is putting some moleskin (the blister preventative) over the entire area to help cushion and spread her weight out away from the puncture site. Also Vitamin E oil is very healing. I hope she feels better soon!
I would do an herbal soak. Comfrey would be the best, but you could use other healing herbs. Make a strong tea and soak her foot in it a couple times a day. You can reuse the tea for a day or two if you want.
