GOOD NEWS OF THE WEEK:
WAL-MART GOES rBGH-FREE
Last week, Wal-Mart announced its so-called “Great Value” store brand of milk will no longer come from cows injected with Monsanto’s controversial genetically engineered hormone, rBGH/rBST. As OCA's Director, Ronnie Cummins, stated in an interview with the Toronto Globe and Mail, Wal-Mart’s announcement will likely serve as a tipping point for driving Monsanto's controversial bovine drug off the market. Since its inception, the OCA has campaigned aggressively against rBGH , which is banned in Europe, Canada, and most of the industrialized world. Wal-Mart’s move, according to industry experts, will likely dramatically expand market demand for rBGH-free and organic dairy products. What a relief. I may buy my milk there. I have a friend who shops there all the time, but won't buy their milk there. She will be glad to hear it too.
Hope this paves the way to a permanent change in the dairy industry.

| I always buy the Wilcox Natural Brand of milk at Walmart and it doesn't have the additives and it is usually cheaper than their brand. I try to buy the same brand of half and half but have terrible luck with it going "bad" too soon. It always seems to have a short sell by date. JoAnn |

In Michigan all milk will be free from hormones, I believe it goes into effect some time this year, because one of the big grocery chains, Kroger maybe, decided to stop selling milk with them in it. It's a small step and hopefully it won't hurt small dairy farms that are already organic too much.

YEA! Also glad to know Kroger was one of the first to do this
Very interesting how more and more organics are seeping into the mainstream
I'm still very wary though and continue to look at labels |

I am sure it isn't quite organic yet, the cows are probably fed all sorts of engineered feed and I am sure they are still factory farm cows, but at least it is a great step in the right direction! I am so glad consumers are voting with their pocket books! Next we need to get hormones out of our meat!

Amen to that, Alee!
On a side note, I buy milk from a small local dairy. (Glass bottles, 1/2 gallons)
It isn't organic, but they don't add hormones or antibiotics and they grass feed their cows. I think it tastes great, not so "sterile" like Kemps or store brands.
Anyhow, I drink their milk, and have slowly been adding it to the Kemps milk the kids drink- to avoid wasting it, and because I can.
My son (Mr. Finicky) saw me drinking a small glass one day, and wanted to try my "hippie" milk. He thought it was wonderful. (Knock me over with a feather) So, budget permitting, I will switch to that instead, whenever possible!

Uhhhh....I'm slightly disturbed. We've drank that milk for years. I guess I should be more informed. I'm glad it's going to be no longer avaliable, but I'm also REALLY glad for the goats that will soon be giving me milk.
