I am so excited!! our chickens will be here tomorrow!!
buff orpingtons and gold laced wyandottes!!! I cant wait. I just don't know if it will be early or late mail! Does anyone have suggestions as to what to have on hand or favorite items? Something that comes in handy to care for our babies! I am so excited and had to share with some farmgirls who would understand!!!! Yeah!

have the brooder set up with heat lamp, water and chicken starter.
newspaper on floor of brooder.
when they come in, immediately teach them where the water and feed is. you'll need to probably dip their beaks into the water gently so that they learn where it is.Same with the feed, act like your fingers are pecking at the feed, when they see you doing this they are most likely to follow suit.but if need be, show them where it is and kind of put their little beaks near it.After that they'll generally take off on their own on finding it and knowing where it is.
good luck.

and once they start eating and drinking make sure their hind ends stay clean. If they will be just for pets and not eating. and you want to be able to pick them up should they ever get loose and need rounded up by hand..you'll want to hold the chickens from time to time to keep them from being flighty. Trust me..chasing chickens isn't very fun if they happen to wind up over at a neighbors house..ha..
We have one that is rather tame and will allow you to just reach down and pick her up, and she'll hop into your lap. The other wasn't handled as much and she's the "wild child" and escape artist..if theirs a will, she'll find a way to get away from you..ha.

you might want to look into plans for creating a portable "chicken tractor/coop" or creating a bottomless cage/coop that can be moved from spot to spot in your yard. That is is you don't already have a large permanent coop area built somewhere.
When we had ducks, their cage at night was a portable bottomless cage..this allowed us to move it around the yard to different areas to keep the fecal matter from building up. We'd move the cage every few days and wash down the droppings back into the ground. It kept down the mess and definitely kept down any stink..and allowed the grass to grow just fine.
-------
you might want to at least have an easily moveable chicken coop even if it isn't bottomless, at least a coop/cage set up that can be moved around.
We only house 2 hens in our city backyard, but my husband built a chicken cage/coop that has a wire bottom, and we move the cage around every few days and wash down the droppings underneath.
------------
any garden areas will need fenced off as chickens will get into the garden after things like strawberries and so forth and will eat your berries.
---------------
Good luck!!

LOL nope..you'll do fine..LOL they just need shown where the food and water is right at first..after that..they learn. no real chicken whisperer thing..they are pretty smart. ha.
-----
you are silly mima..LOL made me laugh.
-----------------
we have a hen though that I swear she tries to talk to us..she loves to be petted and she'll come up to you and cluck to be petted..this low cluck..then when she starts getting petted she'll revert to this low little sound like a soft sound..hard to describe, but a low almost purr kind of thing..but of course a chicken sound..ha.
no..here at our house honestly..Naomi is the chicken whisperer..ha. She loves her "babies"
back when I was a kid we had 200 baby chicks in our bathroom at one time..so I sort of remember how it was taking care of them.

one day Naomi came running up to me when her chicken was little, it had gotten its foot cut on the feeder or something in its cage.."mama , mama she's bleeding, what do I do?". So I went into the house and grabbed a handful of sugar..and put it on the foot. stopped the bleeding straight away.
chicken was right as rain soon as anything. So you learn, or remember things you have heard along the way. :0) they certainly are fun to raise and have around..and even in the city.:0)
I highly recommend them...even to city folk. ..ha.

Oh, your Wyandottes will be lovely. We have only one left from our first flock and she is now about 4 years old. Not laying much, but we keep her around because she is one of the more beautiful birds we have!

You all might want to scrap newspaper for chicks and use pine shavings.

Newspaper is too slick and may cause permanent leg spraddle.

To get chicks used to where they eat, place paper towel over a portion of the shavings where the feed is located. This way they don't confuse shavings w/ food to start.

The paper towel can be removed in a few days.

Oh they are home! My dear sweet little biddies are here. The 6 of them came home with my dear dear husband yesterday and I promptly tried to burn down the house and kill them all with the heat lamp. It collapsed into the pine! but all are fine and well and I would only confess that here! All are eating and drinking well and we are coming up with a list of biddie names for when they get a little older. I like to name them on their own personalities. I have no idea how to put a picture here so here is my blog www.laubers.blogspot.com if you want to see them and the childrens' ducks.

Your chicks are so sweet! And i love your ducklings names :) Daffodil especially.

My chickens are coming tomorrow!Three 19wk old RIR pullets, and I'm all a tizzy. The coop/run isn't ready yet, so I've got a box ready for them in the sunroom til we can get them outside, but I still need to get feed, shavings and a waterer. Can't wait!

At the end of the month I'm getting some little baby peeps too, imported over from Murray McMurray- speckled sussex, buff orpington, araucanas, and a silver wyandotte. :)

The book I have on raising chickens says not use the newspaper because it gets slick and can cause leg problems lolol sometimes books are not always accurate however :)
The other thing they used was called a table top pen. Made out of those plastic storage boxes. There is a chicken wire over top and heat lamp. Its different and kinda makes me nervious thinking the plastic would get hot and melt :( ... Our chickens will be here in May (Austrulorps) (sp)
