I've been having weeks of chronic lower back pain. Got the MRI results today and it revealed a herniated disc. I have an appointment for April 13th to have a procedure done with injections and a camera at a surgery center. I'm assuming it's cortisone shots, but will learn more when I go in for a consultation. Just not sure. Has anyone been treated for this? I'd love to hear any experiences. Thanks, Lu

Oh no Luzy....I bet that hurts so much! I hope the cortizone shots help the pain alot. My husband went through all that a few years ago and eventually had back surgery..his was more involved that a herniated disc...but gosh...back pain is so hard..it just affects every move you make. I hope you feel alot better soon Cuz!!

Luzy, Welcome to my world. Actually I have gone through the series of three shots 2 weeks apart 12/07-1/08. I got two injection each time. L3&L5. My doctor was awesome. Worked great. It did smart a bit at first when they were putting the numbing medication in. Your legs feel really funny afterwards and feel very heavy for the next 24-48 hours. I did not have to take any time off of work except for the injection time and then the rest of the day. I was put on restricted lifting weight of 10 lbs during the 7 weeks. I also wear a new style of tennis shoe that has DRAMATICLY improved my back fatique. I have a generic brand but my doctor said that the Nikes are the best of course also more money. They have what looks like shock absorbers on the heels. I'm at about 80% improved . My pain was so bad by the time I went for treatment that I could not walk, stand or even lay for more then a few minutes at a time. The Dr. did say that I will most likely need a repeat in 6 months but does not think I will need surgery. I have lost 10 pounds, walk as often as I can, and do Yoga to increase flexibility and lower back strenght. If you have an other questions feel free to e-mail me. I was scared too. My DH had them done 10 years ago and they were very painful and he was very surprised at how accurate and painless they were for me.

I had a herniated disk as well.My sciatic nerve was compressed and causing my leg and foot to go numb.I had back surgery which went very well.It still hurts all the time, butnothing like it did.It takes a long recovery period, and you have to be good to yourself! I had cortisone shots ten years ago,and they did help for awhile.I was put under anesthesia,so I did not feel any discomfort from the injections.Whatever you decide to do,don't let it get so bad that your quality of life is affected!cowgirl mama |

I've had a herniation of the disc between L4 and L5 several times. First two were really bad, lasting for 8-12 weeks each time and then 3 months of physical therapy to get back in shape afterwards. But I've had really good luck with Celebrex. If I take it as soon as the problem starts, my back is pretty much back to normal in 1-2 weeks. My doctor said if I have another bad episode she is going to refer me to a surgeon to look into options, but it has been 2 years now with no problems (knock on wood). Good luck with the treatment, I hope it goes well. |
