Can anyone tell my why my tomatoes are pithy? It is mostly my Romas. They are firm but the inside is mushy once you cut into them, and they have no flavor. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps too much water?
I had the absolute best crop of Roma tomatoes this year, if you want to try another brand next year. The Cook's Garden catalog, Striped Roma Tomatoes. I started from seeds indoors, transplanted outside in mid-May and still (mid-October) eating fresh red tomotoes on sandwhiches and making the best red-sauce. They look beautiful on the vine (striped gold and red) and beautiful in the jar peeled and canned up whole.

Julia,
I agree, it sounds like the variety you planted, try another next year. Also, sometimes the plums and sauce tomatoes are pithier than their sandwich counterparts. |

Don't feel too bad. I think it has been the weather. Too cool to begin the summer, then too hot.
I think tomatoes need lots of sunshine and consistant water and warmth. Hardly anyone around here got good tomatoes despite our best efforts. I figure better luck next year.

Thanks girls, I really appreciate it. I'm thinking it may be the variety as my sweet 100's and early girls did well. I like the sound of the striped romas. Do you stripe the leaves off your plants? I read about it and then went out and did it. Then I heard you shouldn't with roma. What do you do? Plus, how often do you water them? Thanks again! Julia

| I had problems with my tomatoes the last 2 years, although this year was A LOT better. Mine taste fine if I can get them but I have the problem with blossom-end rot. I don't know why-I tried to keep the water consistant. |
