We just got the final diagnosis for my Danny boy, age 7. He had been having so much trouble with relating to people, and not knowing how to act. He is agressively friendly, and doesn't realize that he can scare other kids. After years of punishment, trying to teach, etc. plus other things about him, example: obsessive compulsive. A specialist has diagnosed Autistic. A high functioning autism is called Aspergers. Danny boy just isn't able to learn some things...can't understand at all. Now he is starting to think that people don't like him, but he doesn't know why. This is hard for me to hear and to realize now. The good side is that now he could qualify for the services and help he needs, and also more patience and understanding from me. I love him so much. Linda

Wow, Linda! I'm sooo glad that he's found a diagnosis. There are many good sides to finding out that he has Aspergers. Several friends of ours have children who are either Asperger kids or have serious autism. You can do it and now you have tools and knowledge to help him succeed :) I know it's difficult but, mystery solved and now you can move on.

Linda, so very sorry to hear about your little boy. But Jonni is right; when you know what you're dealing with, it has got to be easier and more success will be realized. Sending you and Danny boy a big hug, Nance |

Linda, how lucky Danny boy is to have such a caring mother! New things are being found out every day about treating Aspergers. Let's take a moment and give thanks for the excellent treatment and cure he is receiving right now. Let it manifest right before our eyes and in our hearts in the form of beautiful blue light shining around and in him.

I have a dear friend who's two boys (ages 8 and 6) have Aspbergers. It was such a relief to find out the diagnosis for these two! They are also getting the help they need. Blessings to you and Danny Boy and give that child a hug from me! Susan |

autism is so misunderstood but if you look at the stats it is really quite common among children and especially boys. I am sure this is a scarey time for you. I will pray for you and your family and especially Danny. I hope you can find some guidance and information from your schools special education teachers. Please let me know if I can help in any way!

Linda , I've just been watching a program on Discovery Health television and there was a piece about a young boy diagnosed with Asberger's. His parents found out about a program called Son Rise, and it has changed his life to an incredible degree. I'm sure there is information about this program on the internet. It was heartening to see the change in this child who couldn't relate to people to being able to deal with his problem and enjoy his life and be able to relate to people. I'm sure you'll get lots of great advice from your doctor and friends, but I just wanted to pass this along. It is so hard shen our children have problems that we can;t figure out. You are going to have many challenges ahead, but there are wonderful things learned about your son's condition all the time. Knowledge is always better than worry.

sorry to hear the road ahead of you is going to be a struggle, but like everyone said, at least now that you have a diagnosis, you can focus on what's going to help danny and you. it's obvious, i'm sure, but go to the library and bookstores, too, and do some reading on aspergers and general autism. different books will focus on different aspects of having and working with autism. my daughter has a learning disability in reading comprehension. i learned that that learning disability also affects her ability to comprehend inuendos in general conversation thus affecting her skills in social relationships. the reason i bring this up is that i read several books and sometimes i'd only get something valid or that would make sense to me from only one chapter in an entire book---but it did help and made a difference. good luck. |

Now that you know, you can forge ahead and give him all of the help that he needs. That is how it was for us when we found out John was deaf, had cerebral palsy and is moderately mentally impaired. It was an "At last!" moment for us because we knew that now that there was a diagnosis, there could be a course of care for him. We have been very blessed over the past 22 years and I know that you will be as well. There will be difficult times for each of you, that is a given. But grab onto the good moments, hold them close and they will carry you through. I promise. (((hugs)))

I've been keeping an eye on this topic and I just didn't have words to say at that moment. I have an autistic daughter as well, it's devestating when you first hear of it but you have a diagnosis now and now you can do the best you can to help your child adapt to the world around him. Social skill groups can help him with his overly friendly attitude with other kids and help him make friends. My daughter is 5 and we had a diagnosis when she was 3. We've been doing therapy for her since she was 18 months. She has come a long way but she is just starting to realize it is getting harder to make friends and that she is different. The stages I went through when she was diagnosed was sadness, guilt, frustration, anger, wanting to try to "cure" her, over protectiveness, to acceptance. I hope your journey into this will not be so difficult. If you need someone to talk to let me know. I know I've been doing this with the help of my farmgirl sisters and others. I don't belong to a support group because for now I think we are doing ok with what I have, but perhaps a group will help you get to the resources you need to help your son. Depending on your state you may be eligible for medical assistance, support or even therapies at no cost or low cost. It can get expensive with all the different therapies around and not all of them are medically sound so just do your research and if you are confused there is plenty of help out there. Please let me know if I can be of assistance to you.

Thanks so much to all of you for suggestions, hugs and good wishes. I have to admit I think I'm in the "trying to cure" stage, and getting frustrated with the "system", especially the school system. The laws don't mean anything unless people are made to follow the laws or even their own school district rules! I am learning the hard way and I stress everytime the phone rings during the day praying that it isn't his school teacher calling with a complaint about his behavior. The last call was only a couple days ago. I swear I want to just not answer it and let them deal with him until school is out. I should let my phone take a message. Right now I am studying the laws for special ed students...lots of pages that I got from an advocate. It is one day at a time. I really like reading your experiences. I love Danny boy so much and thank God everyday for him in a special way now. I am feeling sorry for him and probably spoiling him. What is really hard is trying to figure out what he understands and what he doesn't. What to expect and what just isn't going to work. on and on One day at a time

Linda, Keep after the schools, educate yourself on all the laws and use an advocate. Be a pest and demand what your son needs. I was in special education for over 10 years and had 2 special needs children that I adopted. I have to be honest I'm sure there were times when the school hated me but when it came to my kids I was a wench. The children who had parents who were visible and verbal got the best help. Stay strong and do not be afraid to ask for help. Hugs to you and Danny

I am sorry that little Danny has to deal with this. It is a pretty common thing nowadays, and I know there is alot of help and support groups out there for both you and him. I hope that the Lord will direct your path to be able to find the best way to work with Danny so that he can be the happiest little guy there is. HUGS to you BOTH!!

Hey Linda, at last you have a name for what you have been dealing with. I think it's always easier to cope when you know what you are dealing with. Nothing wrong with being in the cure stage, heck you might find something that helps.
sending love and hugs for you and Danny boy. Phyllis |

My oldest Grandson is autistic and blind, along with several other medical issues. It has been a long haul for him and my son and daughter-in-law, but they couldn't be better parents. We've almost lost him several times due to his medical problems, which include ( and I don't know the exact medical terms for all, so bare with me), his blood sugar will jump to 400 plus for no reason, and then drop tp 14, he will be on growth hormones for the rest of his life due to a pituatarygland that never developed, his potasium levels drop without warning and he will seize, if he gets the flu, he ends up in the hospital for a week. He's 10 yeras old and as sweet as he can be, loves music and dogs ( he has a therapy dog which helps keep him calm and keeps him safe), he loves to be sung too, no matter how bad your voice is, and he loves to be outside, no matter the weather. He goes to school everyday and is learning alot from his teachers, and when its the weekend, or vacation or a holiday he is sad, cause hes not in school. If I had to pick his perfect parents, his Mom and Dad are the ones. I know how tuff it is , and God has special Angeles just for these kids and their parents, I am glad you are going to be getting the proper help, and if you ever need to, FIGHT for what your son needs.

Oh Linda, I am right there with you. My 18 year old just received the Asperger's DX in May. Keep after the school for services that he deserves. Email me off subject if you want to ask questions.
