Aidan Murphy (aidanm, #7664) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Intermediate Carp-hen-try Badge!
"Put together all the furniture in my new apartment and arranged it myself. Definitely took more than 20 hours to put all of those pieces of furniture together.
I was really proud of my apartment and I’m proud that I was sustaining it on my own. I even had a dance floor that I made for myself and put together so I could practice Irish dancing."

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner What's Your Beef? Badge!
"I researched the difference between grass-fed beef and corporately raised beef. I discovered that grass-fed beef is lower over all in fat and calories. It also contains more of the good fats (2-4 times more omega 3's and 3-5 times more CLA's) and less of the bad fat. It also contains more antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, and beta carotene. With these differences comes the health benefits of better heart health, lower cancer risk, lower risk of inflammatory diseases, and increased brain health (less depression, schizophrenia, ADD, and Alzheimer's).
I always knew grass fed beef was better tasting, and that the animals are in a more natural environment so it's better for them. I thought it would just make sense that the meat was better for you. I didn't know there were SO many health benefits though."

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Birds Badge!
"I researched the birds that are native to Ohio and made a wish list of birds I would like to see.
I've always enjoyed listening to the birds and I can identify a few obvious ones like the bald eagles, the robins, and the cardinals. Even knowing my knowledge of birds is pretty minimal, I was blown away by how many birds there are that are native to Ohio! I've never heard of a yellow bellied sap sucker, or an Indigo Bunting. They're both on my wish list! I'd also like to see an owl. According to my research I should be able to find some. I'm excited to work on the next level of this badge."

Patty Krug (patty, #8551) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Recipes Badge!
"I definitely have my favorite recipes written down and they are used as much as I can use them - some on certain holiday get togethers and others more often.
There was one recipe I forgot to write down and that was my mom's recipe for homemade cinnamon rolls she made from the Betty Crocker Cookbook. Delicious."

Patty Krug (patty, #8551) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning an Intermediate Recipes Badge!
"I have both a book with recipe cards for the ones used more often and a box to keep adding more recipes to, but they are well used.
Made for our daughter's. They love getting recipes to try on their families. My family favorites are corn pudding and banana bread from my mother-in law, oh, and homemade pancakes from scratch. Yum! Definitely keepers. So now they have them for themselves. I'm also putting one together for my granddaughter to give to her at her graduation."

Sherrilyn Haines (Dare2BUniquelyMe, #1350) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning a Beginner Macrame Badge!
"I chose embroidery floss for the project because of the many colors it comes in and the fact that I have tons of it.
We used the granny square knot, the square knot, and the half hitch for our project.
I already know how to macrame, so my daughter and I spent a happy afternoon together (about 4 hours) making friendship bracelets. I taught her several variations of knot sequences and adding beads for extra bling. She absconded with the ones I made.
I had learned to macrame back in the early 1970's and it was a lot of fun getting back into it. I really enjoy spending time with my child and teaching her a craft from my own childhood."

Sherrilyn Haines (Dare2BUniquelyMe, #1350) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Intermediate Macrame Badge!
"Some knots that I used in my next project include: Barrel knot, double half-hitch (horizontal and diagonal), left and right granny square knots.
I spent 2 days (over 10 hours) making 2 plant hangers using two different sizes of cording.
I had forgotten how much a macrame plant hanging looks like a swing to a cat. I lost 2 pots to the cats, but the plants survived."

Sherrilyn Haines (Dare2BUniquelyMe, #1350) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Water Management Badge!
"The benefits of adding native plants to my yard is that native plants are accustomed to the growing conditions in the area they are native, so require less care once they have been established. Three plants that I will and have added to my yard include salal, Oregon grape, and huckleberry.
Depending on where you are at on the property, the soil is either very damp, or marginally dry. The property is located on part of the morraine left behind by the glaciers that created the Puget Sound and is near to a wetlands. I only water the flower gardens in front of the house (container herbs and edible flowers too), my vegetable gardens, and my berry patch. The grass and mosses are on their own.
Watering in the evening allows all night for the water to soak into the ground and the cooler temperature slows evaporation. Watering in the morning allows plants to absorb the water during the coolest part of the day without leaving water on the plant that might promote mold growth.
Deep watering is the process of completely drenching a plant's root system to ensure that it gets a more than adequate supply of water. Generally, to deep water a plant, the water must soak at least 8 inches or more beneath the soil's surface. It is something that would work and I do use soaker hoses. I try to deep water my plants so that I do not have to water as often, and to encourage them to reach for the water table (our water table is not that deep in some places.)
Because I am on a well, monitoring water usage is very important to me, especially during the dry summer months. I do my best to plant both native species and my gardens in the areas that best support them."

Sherrilyn Haines (Dare2BUniquelyMe, #1350) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Expert Mosaics Badge!
"For my expert level, and because I am selling my house, I chose to make my mosaic on a curved surface and do a couple of Turkish lamps. The first one is very large and plugs into the wall. The second one is slightly smaller and battery operated. Both were challenging because of the patterns I chose and the fact that they were on curved surfaces.
The both look amazing when lit, but they were seriously challenging. I had to hold the globe in one hand and glue the tiles on with the other. Too much glue and the tiles slide all over the place. Not enough glue and they fall off. Once you get the tiles attached to the globe, then you put in the filler beads. I think I had as many beads attached to my hands as I did the globe. It was important to make sure you got them in all the open spaces otherwise when the grout was put on, it would create dark spots. Once the glue dried for 24 hours, I put the grout on and discovered all the places that I hadn't put enough glue on. They were both very messy projects, but a lot of fun.
My girlfriend made a smaller lamp of her own when we did girlfriend weekend. We intend to use then in our glamour camper as soon as we find one we can afford. But that's a whole 'nother project."

Debbie Klann (debbieklann, #770) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a Beginner Nellie Make-do Badge!
"The theme for my 3 Nellie Make Do badges is ...SCRAPS!!!!! How they accumulate! And how exciting it is to make something new with what seems like nothing.
I purged my scrap cupboard and decided to FINALLY use all of the red, white and blue scraps that I have been saving for years.
The beginner part of this badge yielded 2 different table runners. I even used scrap pieces of batting and leftover binding from another project. Americana is one of my favorite color combinations!"

"This scrap quilt pattern has been on my radar for awhile so while I had those patriotic scraps out and was cutting….and cutting…..and cutting…. I finished using them up by making this quilt top!
I really love how this turned out! I’ve been thinking about our country’s big celebration next year and wanted to have a special quilt to commemorate it. I’m going to send this off to my quilting lady soon. The cutting and piecing fulfilled the time requirement for this badge."

Debbie Klann (debbieklann, #770) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Expert Jewelry Making Badge!
"To complete the expert level badge, I made a necklace and bracelet for myself, a pair of earrings that happened to match a bracelet that I had made earlier and then 2 matching sets of a bracelet and earrings to gift to my granddaughters.
I used some special Swarovski crystals for the bracelet and earrings and I’m pleased with the way they turned out and their sparkle!"

Debbie Klann (debbieklann, #770) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Expert Nellie Make-do Badge!
"I have been working on this Christmas tree skirt for a really long time! I decided to get it finished this year. I started with a pattern for a very small skirt and enlarged it to fit over a tree stand made from a 5 gallon bucket. I wanted it to drape over the bucket and wooden base and out onto the floor. It’s made entirely from scraps.
I’m so happy with the way it turned out and excited that I finally got it finished this year! I’m looking forward to using it!"

Christine Kenney (bellepic, #8680) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Intermediate Candle-making Badge!
"I posted a blog entry about it here!
https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/03/candlemaking-intermediate.html
Even if these candles didn't turn out to be Etsy/Pinterest caliber, learning to make colorful molded candles was fun and educational.
I also discovered I could use my surfeit of ugly but functional creations as an informal "timer" for procrastinated tasks. "Just work on that UFO or file your taxes for the duration of tea light this week, how hard could it be?" "

Sherrilyn Haines (Dare2BUniquelyMe, #1350) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an Intermediate Backyard Farmer Badge!
"When my daughter and I stayed at MaryJane's farm in June 2022, we had the opportunity to visit with the cows and learn how to milk them. One of the girls had recently calved, so we got to visit with the newest member of the herd. Only one of the cows was producing milk at the time.
I also support heritage breeds through local milk purchases. The farm I get milk from has a herd of Guernseys. I'm a sucker for big brown eyes.
My dad milked our cow and our goat when I was a kid, and I tried milking then, but my hands weren't strong enough. Learning about milking with modern equipment was quite different. I learned about testing for infections as well.
I like Guernsey milk. It has a richer flavor and higher cream content. It makes amazing biscuits and gravy!"

Sherrilyn Haines (Dare2BUniquelyMe, #1350) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning an Expert Palate Pleasers Badge!
"I replaced 2 of my typical dinner recipes with something new and more exotic; egg rolls and jager schnitzel. I have also started cooking more foods from my Scottish, Welsh, Irish, and German cookbooks (they don't use as many seasonings). I also cook from my Greek and Mediterranean cookbooks (they use many more seasonings).
Two news types of restaurants I have tried is Thai and a sushi bar. Both were delicious, but I still don't care for raw seafood.
I shop at a variety of grocery stores, including H-Mart (Asian) and the local Mexican grocery. It's on my list to try the Hawaiian grocery store near me. My palate is continuing to expand.
When it comes to Chinese food, it varies heavily by region (Mandarin is not the same as Sichuan), and Thai is very different from both. Look no further than what is grown in the region to get an idea about what will be in the food.
Mexican food is another one that is very different by region. On the west coast, there is a lot more seafood and cream/dairy. Inland, there is more beef and bean. If you go south, you find more chocolate and vanilla. When you compare Mexican food with the food of Latin countries such as Spain, Italy, and France, you find just how heavily Mexican food is influenced by the existing indigenous populations in spite of colonization by Europeans. The photo is whirled peas and ricotta on toast and a roast onion and garlic quiche with a potatoes and cheese crust."

Sherrilyn Haines (Dare2BUniquelyMe, #1350) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Lost Art of Letter Writing Badge!
"I created a letter writing box with envelopes, stationary, cards, stamps, favorite pen (all my pens are favorites), and address book. At the moment it is a mobile writing space, so no candle or mood music yet.
My mom gave me a really cool box that she had gotten some stationary and cards in. It is the perfect size to mold my collections of cards, pens, envelopes, and other writing supplies. Since I am putting my house on the market, having my writing supplies mobile is wonderful. It's my desk in a box."

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an Intermediate The Secret Life of Bees Badge!
"I read the book Bees: Natures Little Wonders, by Candace Savage and I researched the difference between raw honey and processes honey. The difference is that processes honey is heated and filtered. Both of which remove and or destroy some of the beneficial compounds like pollen, enzymes, and antioxidants.
There are a few local honey producers near me. One sells honey at our vet's clinic and another sells at the local farmers market during the summer or butcher shop year round. I found I prefer the taste of raw honey over processed honey. I also found the book fascinating! I have a bad reaction when I get stung so I've always been one to avoid bees, wasps, etc. any time I can. I know they're a very important little critter, but I had no desire to study them or get too close, until I started working on this badge. I highly recommend this book. It is truly amazing how organized a bee hive and colony is. I had no idea!"

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a Beginner Water Conservation Badge!
"I checked all taps in the house and barn for leaks. One in the barn was leaking a slow drip, so my husband helped me replace the seal inside the faucet. I also researched some simple ways to save water. For me the biggest ways to save water are to take a bath instead of a shower on the days I want to use the warm water to relax my aching muscles, shut off the tap while washing dishes, and only run full loads of laundry. Just doing these 3 things can easily save around 50 gallons of water. Since I wouldn't do as many loads of laundry I'm averaging it to be about 250-300 gallons a week saved.
I thought I was doing a pretty good job of not wasting water until I did a little research. There is room for more improvement, but I find that change sticks better for me and my family if we do it a little at a time. On top of these three things for myself, my husband now puts water in the sink for shaving instead of running the water constantly."

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Heirlooms Forever Badge!
"I read the book Gardening with Heirloom Seeds by Lynn Coulter and I purchased some heirloom seeds for the garden from https://www.freeheirloomseeds.org/ Although it's too early to plant the garden, I have started some seeds indoors.
Since I borrowed this book from the lending library and have to return it, I wrote down a few tips until I can purchase the book for myself. There is so much wonderful information in there I would like to have a copy on hand for future reference. The seed starting has been quite an adventure! It's not quite as easy as I expected and I've had to do some replanting already. But, it's fun and I love learning how to grow things from seed. I can't wait until it warms up and I can get outside in the garden."

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning a Beginner Emergency Preparedness Badge!
"For this badge I determined that the types of emergencies my family is most likely to face would be fire or a tornado. It's possible my community could also face flooding but my home is far enough away from the river that this is not a major threat.
We have made a plan for how to evacuate the house from all levels in case of a fire. We also determined where the best place is to shelter from a tornado if we're inside or outside."
