I'm not clear on your question. How do we reconcile homeschooling with the NEA?? Some of us are public-school teachers, don't belong to the NEA, and do support those who wish to homeschool. What's to reconcile? There are plenty of lobbyists for all sorts of organizations in this country - it doesn't mean everyone who's even a member supports everything their organization does. (And again, not an NEA member here.)

Hi girls. PLEASE don't make your comments personal. This is an issue close to all mothers' hearts and we know you can get riled up on both sides of the issue, but remember one of our favorite quotes, "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there." -Rumi Thanks! Carol

I'm really hoping that something serious happens to change the way the schools around me, and the ones that I know some of the teachers at, because they are in more of a mess than I'd ever imagined. High school teachers allowing students to look up porn on their computers, getting them cigarettes, alcohol and drugs, wearing clothing that's not appropriate for teachers to be wearing. It's so sad that the bad eggs overshadow what the good ones are doing but it's the bad ones that really need to be let go. From what I understand, from current teachers, the union protects the bad ones from just being let go...I know they protect the good teachers too but obviously there are some serious flaws in the system for it to have to be that way.
My hats off to all the good teachers out there, especially ones in schools where things like violence and drugs are a serious issue! I still have the idea of being a teacher in the back of my mind but with the lack of job openings in my state and how long it will take it for me to get through school I don't see it happening but I appreciate those who choose that profession.

I am a public school teacher and Julie you have every right to be proud of your career and the students lives that you touch. What other career do you know of that strongly suggests you have a masters degree to begin a pay scale below what a truck driver makes? I am so sick of hearing that teachers make too much money. I have seen both excellent examples of homeschooled children and I have also had children who came to public school unable to read at the age of 8 who were supposedly "homeschooled". I am a firm believer that we as parents are our children's first and primary educators but the world is so vast and there is so much diversity that I would be both ignorant and arrogant to believe I can teach my children everything they need to know. There are positives and negatives with both situations, and we are all entitled to make our own choices best for our individual children. Let's stop bashing public teachers for doing jobs above and beyond the call and as homeschoolers do the very best you can for your children and there really should be no animosity on either side if all children are being educated to their full potentials.

Hi there, just a quick comment . I homeschool my kids. My daughter red at 4 . She's 9 now. My son is almost 8, and HE still can't read well yet... Remember, all children are different and sometimes learn ...slower. Blaming homeschooling is not always fair.
