Hi Everyone!
I've been a Mary Jane fan since finding her magazine in the organic section last year.
I am a transplanted Iowan in the Foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and hang on tightly to my farmgirl ways. My parents left the family farms to teach and be activists in the "big city" but my very large extended family made me into a farmgirl anyway. So now I have grown up to become a Farmgirl Activist!
My husband and I live on one rural acre, just big enough for organic flower and vegetable gardens. Luckily we are close to orchards and vineyards that allow us to be constantly making beer, wine, and mead. I work for a local Soil and Water District and love the rural community. I'm excited to be a new member here! Anyone else in the Foothills?

Your place sounds enchanting! I'm in the foothills of California, not N.C. Been to your foothills many times, however, for traditional music & dancing. Do you do any of that?

Grapes to wine, Honey to Mead.
The different flavors come from the different honeys you use and you can add fruit juice as well. The best we ever made had raspberry juice added.
It is magical here! Our area has bluegrass and celtic music festivals all summer long and theres always something being harvested.

| Welcome to the forum. Where were you from in Iowa? I am from the Cedar Rapids area. I have been through the Blue Ridge Mountains and thought the area was really pretty. My son was stationed at Langley for several years and we made several trips to the area. |

That's awesome that you moved to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I have lived in Western Washington most of my life, but did a stint with Americorps*NCCC, and lived on the other side of the state line in Roan Mountain, TN. It was so gorgeous. I can't wait to go back.

Youve come to the right place. I too love mead!! We have bees and hope to make mead this fall. I have had some great mead made with cranberry juice.
We are in the foothills of the Olympic mountains here in Washington state. It is lovely here too.
Wish I had your growing season though.

| I love bluegrass music and celtic music. you are lucky as we only have a few of those festivals around here. Mead sounds interesting. Have never seen it here in Iowa. At least not in this area. |

I'm a Davenporter although my family all farms in the SW corner Stanton area. I also graduated from the U of I so Hi to all the CR farm girls I have seen!
The wine shop in the East Village in Davenport Iowa has some Mead if you want to make a road trip and try it. Also Dirty John's in Iowa City. There is also a winery in Northern Wisconsin that makes their own.
Let me find our basic recipe and I will post it here. Very easy to do! |
