so this is my situation my dd who is turning six on sat has gained about ten pounds in the last month and a half. i have a very good hunch that its due to meds for her asthma but i am wondering what i should do. i dont want to talk about it around her cause i dont want to trigger any body image issues and yet i know its not good for her either. so at the moment i am working on cutting out all the junky food and working on things like whole grains and what not. i wont pull her off the meds cause i would much rather have her be able to breath easily then be skinnier then she is at the moment. she is always saying she is hungry too, and i dont want her to feel like she is always hungry. this is such an aggrevating dilema. any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

she is on singulair(has been for a long time so its not the weight contributor)
and pulmicort (this is the newer one)
and has had to have steroids off and on the last couple of months
when she gets a cold it seems to take her down and causes a flare up with the asthma

The steroids can def do it! I think you're approaching this the right way. Slowly introduce better options. There's also a book by seinfields wife about including veggies in foods you wouldn't think of. Sorta sneaking them in. Good luck!

Oh!!! Good luck to you! I wonder to about all the growth hormones they put in meat and milk these days-what is happening to our kids! On the asthma note! I had asthma until we pulled up all the carpet in our house and put down wood laminate floors!! I can't believe the differance!!
I was always the chubby kid growing up so I know it's soo hard!!! Good luck love and health to both of you!! many hugs!

I had a neighbor who sweet DD was just gaining weight for no other reason than that is how her family genetics were. Her mom was the same way at her age. Mom is a smart lady, just kept serving up whole food and got outside for a ton of sunshine and exercise. Never made a big deal of it. That was 4 years ago and DD is now a healthy weight and a outdoor sport fan. She never made a big deal about it, kept all the "societal" things like magazines and tv out of the house and was really positive when they would go clothes shopping. It is tough. I grew up chubby too and I think if I had a more positive home life, I wouldn't have struggled so much. Just keep things positive. Try fruit smoothies to fill her up. You can add flax seed to bulk up the food and fill her stomach with something good.

Cheers,
Heather

I would talk to her doctor as well. Maybe they have a med that wouldn't react so strongly with her body. I know you are doing things right to get the junk food out and try to feed her the good foods, but 10 pounds is quite a bit for your little girl. The doctors might have an idea.

I really agree with everyone to keep it all positive though. Making her worry about her weight would be a sad thing especially at 6!

Steroids definitely can do that! I had to take some for a double ear infection and gained 15 pounds in 3 weeks! It was horrible. But another thing to avoid is the high fructose corn syrup. There was a post somewhere on here about it. My daughter and I have lost 5 -7 pounds each in the last month by taking this out of our diet completely.
Good for you about not making a big deal of it for her! Best wishes!

bumping thanks gals for the words of encouragement
sherry- watch out for crystaline fructose its just another form of high fructose

gonna talk to her doc at her next well check but i might just have to wait till we go back to the specialist cause they are the ones that have prescribed the meds she is on.
