Hi all. Countrymamma led me to the forums and I look forward to exploring!
I live on the FL coast on an acre and a half in a 'country' area (at least what's considered country here). I love the ocean (and dolphins!), collecting sea glass, sea beans, and certain seashells, quilting, scrapbooking, collecting recipes and baking, natural living and organics, gardening, etc. I have one ds that I homeschool and have a wee one on the way at the end of December.
We're looking to give up the coastal lifestyle (gasp!) and move to a very rural setting where we can have even more land and truly live the lifestyle we have envisioned for ourselves. Things are too busy and congested here and it's getting worse by the day. |

Welcome,
Good luck on finding a homestead. I used to live in Florida, for about four years, love the ocean, but not the crowds. Sounds like you have the same feeling. What do you do with the sea glass? What are sea beans? Congrats on the new baby coming, how exciting! Hope to hear from you soon, Jenny |

Welcome dolphindream,
There are a few of us Florida dwellers here on the forum! I have lived in Florida for a long time and been to lots of the beach areas (gulf, east and west coasts) and I had never found a piece of sea glass until I went to California! There I found lots. Which beaches do you find the most sea glass on here in Florida? I have a few sea beans, too. They look like big buckeye nuts (sortof) and are about the size of one, too. Brown and smooth. Is that what you collect, too?
P.S. I hope this Hurricane Katrina is not affecting you! We are watching to see where it comes in on the gulf.

| Hi from Iowa, I have a son stationed at MC Dill at Tampa and have visited that area. They live in Brandon. What area are you from? They have been in florida a year an love it. I am not thrilled with the city areas but the rural area are neat. do you grow any fruit or veggies. We stopped at a strawberry farm and that was neat the fruit was excellent. My son has orange and grape fruit trees in his yard and thought that was neat. |

I'm a little more than halfway down the east coast. Katrina is not affecting us other than sporadic heavy downpours of rain from the feeder bands. We were hit by Frances and Jeanne last year though.
We just moved to this house about 16 months ago (we've lived in FL for almost 8 years though) so my garden is new and for the most part unsuccessful. The hurricanes last year wiped it out and we had an overabundance of rain in June this year (broke a rainfall record) that wiped it out this year. I did have success with carrots, a bit of lettuce and radishes, tomatoes, and some herbs before that happened though. I won't give up! The garden is a neglected mess right now though due to my pg and me not being able to work in the heat so dh has a lot of cleaning up to do for me before I can get started again. We also have a myers lemon tree and a valencia orange tree that we put in last year. We'll get just a couple of fruits from each this year.
Sea glass isn't too easy to come by here. I found the majority of my collection after the hurricanes last fall when all sorts of neat stuff that we rarely see was washed up on our shores. I just have it all displayed in a clear jar.
jpbluesky - Have you see this site.......... http://www.seabean.com/ I have a couple of hamburger beans, a few gray ones that I haven't been able to identify yet, and hundreds of bay beans.
I forgot to mention my other 'babies' in my intro! We have 3 Australian Shepherds (2 black tri's and 1 red merle) and an orange tabby cat.
