It really is my dream. I want to dress when I go out ( I like when I see the matching rain coat and galoshes and rain hat- very stylish), dressing like a lady (thanks Ms. Wilma), have manners, hanging my wash with impeccable care, wearing aprons, sewing, planting a victory garden, live in a small, neat and orderly home, care for my family, live frugally, enjoy a simple, slower life, simple things like swimming in the lake, taking hikes and camping, picnics with homemade food, pin curling my hair, wearing face cream to bed (I have always loved it when I see women with their face cream on in their bed coats), taking pride in what I look like, being a kind neighbor, friend, sister, daughter, wife, mother, bringing neighborhoods back to being a safe place for all to live, saving for a rainy day and eventual retirement, speaking with kind and true words,

Do you really think I could live like this now? I have always romaticized the 1950's. Wouldn't it be fun? Oh the fun!!!

What is your favorite time period and could or do you really live it?

Cheers,
Heather

I am one decade earlier - I love the 1940s. I love listening to old radio broadcasts from the war, Bing Crosby music, the great hairdos, awesome dresses and shoes....etc. I am addicted to WWII books and movies/TV shows.

I don't live it too much other than jammin' to Bing Crosby and studying WWII. I was a history major at one time with a focus on WWII.

I'm with you both in spirit, I was raised by depression era Grandparents and Great auntie and I love the 1940's style, though I love 1920's style hair and clothing too. I learned to enjoy the simpler things from them...of course I had to get over my youthful desire for every thing new and crazy first =P

Well, I grew up in the fifties, and I would not mind being back there. To my eyes, it is normal still. We had a little house in a neighborhood that I could run all over. Half of the houses, I could just walk in the back door anytime. We sat on the porch in the evening and neighbors came over to chat. Mister Frostie came down the road with music playing and we all had ice cream cones. Mom wore dresses, and aprons, and our kitchen table was mother of pearl and chrome. We were pretty happy then, even with looking back with the realistic eye of someone who was really there, and finding it surprising that nostalgia has come to the young ones for that era. I think it is totally possible to have that life style - it was easier than now! But no computers, remember.

True- no computers!! Being I go to school online, that would be my only tough spot...I could give up the TV and the cell phone easily....

One thing I am trying to learn how to do is write in cursive again- real pretty. I write somewhere in between cursive and print and I would love to see those swirly hand written letters. I am also trying to be more impeccable in all of my work I do.

I'm with you Jeannie - I too grew up in the 50s and I can't really remember any downside of that era. Oh - I guess the panic around the Cuban missle crisis with I was in grade school, but for everyday life, it was just as you described it. I guess the fellowship that you have from being in a group like FG would be missing, but I believe you'd have more of the real thing - people would be home in your neighborhood during the day to visit because all the women wouldn't be off to an outside job.

My father was 50 when I was born (my mom just 23)--he was born in 1923 and lived his heydey during the late 30's and 1940's. I grew up with a big crush on Bing Crosby and we always watched old movies--my mom loved Sinatra, but daddy didn't because he never went to war...My favorite actresses when I was little were Irene Dunn and Rosalind Russell...I've always been a fan of the fashions then...purses and shoes to match, hats for ladies (oh how I wish women would wear hats again!!!), and suits with large bows and snug at the waist. Pencil skirts to show of those "gams" as my daddy called legs. I guess I've retained some of that era in my clothing, at least for the office. I dress like Katherine Hepburn or Audrey (if I'm in a dress). Wide leg pants with heels and feminie blouses and coats, always a strand of pearls or a pretty pin. Sheath dresses, sweater sets, and great vintage cardigans that I find on the cheap.

I live frugally and I take care of my family, but I also work full time, which is what mom made sure I could do in the late 60's and 70's...

My house is in a constant state of upheaval due to ongoing remodel, but once it all is done, it will be darling and I am planning on keeping it clean and guest worthy. I just bought some really cute fabric for aprons and want an apron a day and a few extra. My sweetie teases about needing an addition just for the aprons (heehee) ummm....maybe so

Heather, I write a mixture of print and cursive too and would LOVE to start an old fashioned hand writing group at some point. I hate to think of it as a lost art form :( I need to relearn legible hand writing again. The computer has spoiled me.

Yes Annika- I think it is a lost art. I was just looking online at printable cursive programs and I realized, I forgot how to make simple things like r's and don't even get me started on the darn q.~!

Pretty handwriting makes me feel special or somehow safe....if that makes any sense at all!!!

It's funny when we look back on our childhood we see it as perfect don't we? Through a childs eyes I guess for some of us it was. But, if you really think about it, it was not the best of times. There were so many things that were pretty yucky about it. For women especially. We were second class citizens then. I won't even venture into the lives of black women. It was frowned upon if we had a thought of our own,let alone wanted to work outside the home or have a career. Women were expected to do certain things and most certainly not do others. The men were the bosses and their wants and needs always came before the women, actually most everything came before the womens wants or needs. Sure women did get to stay home and raise their kids, that was a good thing. But, they can choose to do that now.I saw a lot of women take a lot of abuse and not be able to do one darn thing about it. They had no where to go and a lot didn't even drive let alone have a job and be able to take care of themselves and their kids.People say there were so few divorces back then, sure there were, women had to stay no matter how bad things got because they couldn't do much else. The clothes and the decor were nice, Leave it to Beaver and Father Knows Best were fun. But, I will take today over the 1950's any day. The past can be so romantized that we choose to remember only the good stuff! I'm so sorry if I offended anyone, I have just felt this way for a long time and today it chose to come out.We can live anyway we want to, if any one lifestyle appeals to you then I say go for it. Looking your best and wearing the styles you love and enjoying all the wonderful things in this world knows no eras, everyone can choose to have good manners and and be kind and enjoy God's beautiful gifts of nature, family, friends and just plain good living. All of you that yearn for that, live it! I love all those things and hope I do my best to fulfill them all for myself and others around me. Again I am so sorry if I offended anyone. I know sometimes I am too outspoken, maybe I should just keep my big mouth shut!!!!

MJ- I understand. I am mostly talking about the essence and fun of doing things like wearing aprons, curling my hair, growing my own vegetables, hanging my laundry and having a home similiar to something in the 1950's (I just like 1950's vintage). By no means would I want to be without my college education, ability to vote, my military service or my right to choose. For me, it's about a feeling,I am not wanting to live the politics of that time.

Cheers,
Heather

Mary Jane, never ever feel like you need to keep your mouth shut. Not bad thoughts at all. There are many things in the past that I see as wrong, but we have the chance now to romanticize and take what we think of as good and leave the bad in the ol' attic. Jonni, Miss Wilma and the rest of the girls here, Nothing wrong with being a lady. My Grandma and Great Aunt were ladies and lived in grace and good taste all of their days. I am a lover of fine hats too and miss the dress up and look like a lady days. Too much bimbo-y clothing, and especially on little girls, don't get me started (rolls eyes). Miss Wilma you ARE a lady and I'm proud of you for it. I end up in farm duds a lot, but at least you won't see me dressed up like a floozy any time soon ;) maybe on Halloween, but the rest of the time I try to dress in good clean lines and well made, if thrifted, clothing and HATS!

There were many bad things of the past, but we don't, thankfully, have to live most of them. On with the charming hats, tea cups, gentle living, cursive writing and all the rest that we love. We can all do that now.

Mary Jane, don't fret, you've simply exercised your right to voice your opinion! You go girl!

I wanted to add my 2 cents to the topic that Heather started...I too am enamored with the 40's & 50's, but more the fashion, the "quality" of products from "then" which have been replaced by merchandise w/ planned obsolescence or are non-existent altogether, the parental involvement in the lives of their children, the sense of taking personal responsibility for our actions & choices, good, old-fashioned organized sports, wholesome play & outdoor activities like jump-rope, baseball, marbles, jacks & the like (that didn't involve TV or video games, 4-wheelers, etc.,) those values are what I desire in life again. I believe it's up to me to be the change I want to see in the world...(that is a borrowed quote of sorts) & it's no easy task...

Mary Jane, you bring up a great point. I work at an historic site (1830-1860's) and visitors are forever asking "Wouldn't you love to live back then?" I always honestly answer that I'd love to visit the past but I certainly wouldn't want to stay. It was tough back then! Real tough! But we can always learn about it and take the goods parts to use in our current day lifestyle. That's the beauty of today. We have the choice to live anyway we like (if we're brave enough to do it!).

One of my favourite party dresses is a 1950 navy silk dress, that an old (in her ninties) friend gave me. I wore it to a museum opening a few months ago and had a ball in it. My winter coat is a Gimbel's 1960 black wool, with mink collar, bought at a thrift store for 7$!

Here is a great website called 'In Timely Fashion' http://www.intimelyfashion.com/index2.html, celebrating, and encouraging the fashions of years past and there are some neat articles about people who consider themselves 'past dressers' - ladies who daily dress in the style of other eras. Click on Articles, and then scroll down to Past-Dressers' Portraits. Merryrose's portrait is one my favourites. Doesn't she look great in her fifties dresses? =;-)

Chandra- yes that is what I was eluding to. Wouldn't it be nice if we went incorporated ideals like that into our lives now. I think it would be for the better.

Girls there were bad times tolike now, I love the old way to an extent now when it comes to a man bossing me look out, I grew up with that But Ibe a lady and still be my own self, now I will tell you how one of my neighbors won her independence, She had 4children worked out in the fields all day and then had to come in and do the womens work, her husband would talk mean to her and was all time beating her, One morning after taking another beating she had enough , she had got up to cook breakfast and W,C. WAS STILL IN BED, SHE GOT THE BUTCHER KNIFE AND WENT IN THERE AND ROLLED HIM UP IN THE SHEET AND STUCK THE BUTCHER KNIFE TO HIS RIBS AND SAID OLD MAN IF YOU EVER HIT ME AGAIN I WILL STICK THIS IN YOU, Well it is a true story and worked wonders he never hit her again and they seem to be a very happy married couple Now you know why I have a good husband , he knows better than ever abuse me Have fun girls

I love how everyone can discuss things here. In our family, my dad worked and did not want mom to work She was 38 before she learned to drive. But that is how she wanted it too. And he would never have laid a hand on her in anger. She had no desire to go out into the work world. So, when you got down to it, Mom and dad were co-bosses, but dad always gave Mom the last word, but in the hardest times, he stepped up and led. It worked because us children knew the pecking order, and felt secure.

I see more families taking that back up, and I think it is good for kids, whenever possible.

I did not know cursive writing was being lost. Really? Hm.....well, that is an art I am glad you are taking up. I love to see pretty writing. Good for you!

miss wilma you crack me up!! I am so jealous of Jonnie & her hubby's visit! I also got to meet them when we made a trip to an organic farm, & you are right, they are sweeties.
When you said if you see me most of the time you would think halloween comes often, that reminds me of a quote from the lady who bred my Great Danes(who is sadly gone). She used to say "Honey if you saw me now you'd need counseling!!"
But on topic now, I agree that the past would be great to visit, but if we didn't have computers, we cold talk with all you great Farmgirls & do great things like making Julia's quilt

I love the 1940s..that is where I would land if I had a way to live in that style and all. Some of my favorite things would be alot older than that..but the '40's are my favorite. People cared about having alot more class..thats for sure!
