I am watching a program I DVR recorded called "The Age of Warming" a Documentary. It is really interesting because it is talking about the polar ice caps melting. I just started watching it, but I highly recommend it!

Hi Alee-
I've been working with some polar scientists for some programs at our museum. Did you know this year is Polar Palooza? The aim is to get people thinking about the dire effects we are having on the planet and simple ways we can make changes that will make a significant difference. I like all your postings about global concerns. Youre awesome!

Thanks Lorie! I love the environment and it really scares me to hear that the polar ice caps are disappearing, that the glaciers are melting 92 feet a year (yikes!!)

I know that natural events like volcanoes can have a dramatic effect on the global warming situation, but I personally believe that our earth is set up to handle that sort of natural pollution load, but when we add in all the human made pollution on top of the natural pollution- it is just too much.

Did you know the penguins are dying because the fish that only live under the ice are following the ice as it moves farther out to sea? So the little penguin babies starve before they ever find their food!

60 minutes did their entire show tonight on Global Warming. It is unfathomable to me how there are people that deny that the planet is heating up at an accelerated rate and that it is really our fault since the Industrial Revolution (the down fall of mankind IMHO.)

Yes, it is sad that so many people live in a state of denial, but I believe that people are starting to get a bit more informed. I know that change is slow, so I guess after over 100 years of industry, maybe we are turning a corner to saving our planet?

Dh and I just watched a show yesterday about the global warming/cooling cycles of the earth. Very interesting. According to those scientists, we're headed for another cooling (little ice age) at some point in the not too distant future. They claim that warming melt the ice caps (which we already knew) but the extra influx of water apparently changes the flow of the oceans currents and causes serious environmental changes and reverses the climate in most areas of the world (equatorial countries would suffer the least change).

Well if the Little Ice Age would recharge the artic, then it sounds like it would be good to me, even if it would make winters even more harsh around here!

I know here on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, people are so ignorant of the global warming issue. New developments are going up everywhere featuring "water-front" property. A couple of years ago it was a huge boon for the area until Hurricane Isobel hit. Then they were "under-water" property. I thought that would make people wake up and think, but I was wrong. Where the hurricane and tide came up the highest now they are building luxury townhomes! I'm reminded of the story of the man that builds his home on sand and the other on rock. Now those people are demanding more infrastructure to protect their homes. And they want insurance to cover erosion.
Somewhere I saw a bumper sticker that said... "God's Coming.. and Boy Is She P#&$^&!" (didn't know how else to do it ;) Anyway, I thought it was funny at first, but then again, I'm thinking Mother Nature isn't so happy with what we've done with her gift, so she just might want to take it back.

I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by. ~anon

I'm so glad that farmgirls are critical thinkers! I also am proud that farmgirls are doing what scientists suggest everyone do to improve the situation... buying local goods and food, reducing consumptions, etc. There is a great way to calculate what kind of effect your own personal lifestyle is having on the planet (and other people whose resources WE are using us). I just cannot begin to fathom how people can STILL be in denial about this. It just gives me jaw drop.

I guess I'm the voice of dissent. I just don't buy what Al Gore is selling. Certainly one can see that the weather is different now than 20 years ago, but I firmly believe it's cyclical. The climate has never been stable. This is a great article on the myths associated with global warming.

Have you actually watched An Inconvenient Truth or read any of the science behind global warming? If you have, you'd know that Al Gore addresses the "cyclical" issue. However, based on the link you posted, it seems that you want to make this a political argument, when in fact it shouldn't be.

Please, let's not argue about this. I think this is one of those issues where some people are going to feel very strongly for, and some are going to feel very strongly against. That's okay. Let's just agree to disagree and enjoy the information shared by all.

Alee, I'm just engaging in the discussion and debate that this topic created. I don't believe I wrote anything offensive; in fact I was responding to the previous post and the information contained therein. I do apologize if someone has been offended, and while I agree that we should all try to get along (especially when you consider what tenets we are reminded of on a day like today), I don't agree that we shouldn't be allowed to have reasoned debate and discussion, and I'm sorry but I also can't just "agree to disagree" when the facts are out there. I'll not reply in this thread again, if that helps, and if anyone wants to have a discussion, they may feel free to contact me via e-mail.

Even if people don't believe in global warming, they should still try to help humans to breathe cleaner air. I don't think we need any political party to tell us this.

I agree with you Trish. We have over 600 acres in crops and more in timber and pasture land. We definitely believe in cleaner air and spend every day of our lives "walking the walk", so to speak.

I definitely was not trying to offend anyone, I simply felt comfortable posting the facts as I see them.
