Our boys are named Joseph, Christopher and Nathaniel. Of course, they all shortened their names to Joe, Chris and Nate. The only one that I NEVER called by his preferred nickname is Nathaniel. I will call him Nathan but never Nate or Nat. I just never liked those. Nate sounds like an old sea captain and Nat sounds like a bug!

Christopher, however, really hated his name growing up because kids who teased him would call him Chrissy. Chris was and still is a big boy (9lbs 11oz at birth), not fat, just big. So it's not like he was scrawny or feminine. I guess it was just the fact that the name was sort of unisex.

They are all much taller than me and all are "stand on their own" strong men. Which is what I wanted for them and hoped that a strong name would lead them there. It still feels strange to me to call my boys "men" but that's what they are now;)

Oh i know you can't base it, but they stick in your head, anyone that teaches will most of the time agree with what i mean, secondly isn't that what sometimes gives a name their specialness or what have you. I will name my daughter Bethany after my dead cousin because we were so close.

My sons are named Sean and Gregory. Gregory goes by Greg now (he's almost 18) and it's not too common at his school, only two of them in his grade.
