Hello everyone! I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you! I'm a farmer wannabe - I grew up in the city and currently live in the burbs - East SF Bay. I'm generally a frustrated gardener - very little that I plant actually grows, but I have managed to get some tomatoes and there are a few eggplants sprouting outside. I keep working at it because I love working outdoors and watching things grow and having fresh, yummy vegetables. I've recently started a Personal Chef business and I'm working on finding clients. I love to cook and I love giving people fresh, real, and perservative-free food to eat!

My dream is to someday have a few animals - goats (I love goats!) and a few chickens. None of this is on my poor husband's radar at all, but you never know what the future may bring!

I know it's my first post, but I have question for all the farmers out there. I hope I don't sound too silly. We recently joined a CSA so I could get organic and local vegetables. I really like the vegetables, but the other day I did some volunteer work at the farm, where I discovered that mice or rats are getting into the sprouts. The farmer just happily picked out the droppings and said he didn't know how to keep them out of the food. Well, this completely freaked me out! Is this just a "city" reaction? Is this kind of thing okay? I know we don't want to use poison on the organic farm, but yuck!

What do you think? Does anyone know safe methods of pest-proofing a sod storage hut?

Welcome, Marlene! Maybe line the sod hut with screen, like screen-door type... very small holes? Not sure if they'd chew through it or not, but might be worth a try. What kind of sprouts were they in? Does seem kinda gross... were they washed throughly? Please explain further! Take some time and browse through here, reading the Member Hints post in the Welcome Section will help you become acquainted fast!

Hi Clare! I am doing a bit a browsing through all the forums. I get so inspired by everybody!

The CSA farmer grows all kinds of sprouts: clover, radish, broccoli, etc. He puts them in pie plates and stores the plates on racks in the hut. He takes them out and rinses them with water everyday until they're done. There aren't any droppings in what we get in our delivery, so I'm sure he washes them at the final stage. I'm just not sure if that's enough to get rid of rodent germs!
