I like sites like this because the way I dress it looks like I got dresed in the dark,,,so I need help putting things together. A lot of these things are inspiration to me, the combinations, pattern, style, etc and it is fun to dream!!!

WOW!! those are just wonderful.. I agree that they seem expensive but only because I think we are used to inexpensive priced items that are foreign made with child labor in sweatshops, under horrible conditions and the like. So you can buy an adorable similar praire skirt made in China for a fraction of the price...BUT what we often don't stop to think about is the price those people pay who make that garment for you and for me. They will continue to pay a heavy heavy price so long as we demand lower priced goods and continue to shop in the stores that support that kind of exploitive labor. What we're seeing in these items are American women charging a fair wage..perhaps not even quite a living wage but maybe enough to pay for materials and a minimum wage salary. By looking at them, they look like high quality and like Frannie said, would probably last forever! Sooo, what we're looking at is a shift in our thinking: Pay a much higher price to support locally American made products that are made in decent conditions for those making it. AND paying for better quality..seams won't tear after a washing or 2..buttons won't pop off with the least little tug..styles won't come and go on the whimsical fancy of someone governing the 'fashion industry' and so forth... I do know that when I sell my clothes, say a praire skirt, which is 65.00..made with linen.. I know that that price covers my cost and pays me less than minimum wage. I don't feel comfortable selling them at a higher price because people just aren't used to that...so I'm very grateful that right now I don't have to sell clothes to make a living! Forgive me if I'm being horribly preachy!! I simply want to encourage a change in perspective. Thanks for letting me share! ~julia hayes

Julia - I agree completely. I just had an experience related to this subject. I sell my chenille baby quilts quite well at $65 at shows. There is about $25-$30 worth of materials in them, I have business costs (booth fees, office supplies, gas, lodging, etc.), so I really only make about $20 for a quilt that takes about 6 hours to make. When family wants to buy one, I ususally only charge them $40 to cover my cost. Both my dd#2 and dil have purchased them from me for gifts. My dd#1, who lives about 80 miles away and makes about $90,000 a year (plus a husband who also has a great job) called one day and asked if she could buy one of my quilts for a baby shower gift that she was throwing for a friend. I looked to see if I had the color she wanted in stock and I did and told her I'd get it out the next day. She said, "How much do I owe you for it?" I considered a moment, thinking of the cost of mailing which I've found postage to be over $8, plus the box, so I said "$50". She gasped, and said "HOW much?" and I told her again and she said "I had no IDEA you charged that much for those.... I couldn't pay that for a baby gift. Never mind, I'll find something else." Wow, did she ever hurt my feelings! It's like she has no regard for my craft, or my business. I think she thinks it's just some little hobby to keep mom busy. My instinct was to just give her the darn quilt, but then I thought, that wasn't fair to my other dd and my dil who actually wanted to pay me for my product. This really bothered me (and still does) especially since it was my own daughter who showed such a lack of respect for my work. She has two little boys, and when they were first born, I couldn't wait to sew for them. Well, I soon found out that my gifts were going unused - she admits she only dresses her kids in name brands, so I quit making them anything. Broke my heart but there was nothing I could do. I don't understand it because I been in very high end juried shows where my children's items are the only children's booth and almost sold out at what I considered to be high prices. I guess it's just the eye of the beholder - those women looked upon my craft as "designer one of a kind chidren's fashions" and my dd looks at them as homemade clothes. Sorry I rambled, but it's cathartic to get this out - it really hurt my feelings.

That's heartbreaking to hear, but not uncommon. I found that out with soapmaking as well. Family can be the most unappreciative when it comes to support of your craft. why is that?

Sherri -- when I run into people like that I tell myself that they don't appreciate handcrafted items or the time that goes into them. She has what I call a Wal-Mart mentality. Not to mention the fact that woman was just plain rude. Even if I saw something that I felt was priced more than I wanted to pay I'd never say anything.

Oh wow!!!! Aren't these designs dreamy??? And I just love her boots. Too bad my big 'ol expecting belly won't fit into anything like this for awhile!
On selling our skills -- most of my customers don't blink when I tell them how much I charge for hems/etc., and some insist on giving me more than I ask for. But one lady brought over two skirts and a pair of pants and was shocked at my prices. She couldn't believe how much I was getting for just sewing a little hem! Of course, this is a lady without a sewing machine at all, so it's not like she could have done it herself without setting them in by hand.
It's stories like Sherri's which make me flat-out refuse to do custom design for kids (at least, kids that I didn't produce -- nothing makes me happier than sewing my daughter's clothes, and she HAS to wear them since she's only four and doesn't know any different).
