Someone named sourjane, or someone utilizing sourjane's id has posted a bunch of "payday loan" crap on the board. When I tried to post something in the kitchen forum, it was like I'd become "her" and I couldn't access the forum properly for about 2 hours. Really weird. Additionally, the post that I wrote appeared like it was written by Sourjane.

Yikes.

Hi all. We've noticed this and have our tech guys working on it. Don't worry - we'll get it taken care of!
Thanks!

Thanks, Carol. It's really spooky to "become" someone else WHILE you're posting!

As always, you're on top of it!!!!

Hi girls.
Yes, we're on top of it, but honestly, didn't discover it for a while. As you can imagine, we don't "subscribe" to the whole forum to see all the posts, as that would be a full-time job in itself! We try to check new posts often, but it would really help if any of you see anything like this happening to e-mail me right away ... then we can nip it in the bud, so to speak!
Thanks everyone!
Carol

so glad that it was caught..we started noticing muutiple posts under the same name when I'd refresh the page, but couldn't log in to the forums. I figured it had to be a spammer/hacker. Certainly hope the problem gets solved.

The problem seems to be fixed now. If any of you have trouble logging in or notice anything out of the ordinary, please let us know right away.
Thanks so much!

Hey, all- Soon after I tried to get on the forum and encountered problems, I received an e-mail from "PayPal" about my account, asking me to confirm my information. There was no security lock, so I forwarded it on to the REAL PayPal (spoof@paypal.com) and deleted it from my computer. Yikes!!

Hi Karin.
I checked with our tech guy about the e-mail you received from PayPal to see if it might be connected to the problems we had on the forum today. He said that it almost certainly was NOT connected. He said that he regularly gets spam e-mail that looks like it's from Pay Pal, banks, credit cards, etc. I've received those myself too, but have never experienced any problems with my real Pay Pal account. You did the only thing we can really do by alerting PayPal.

Thanks everyone!
Carol

Hi Jeannie!
Yes, you have a good memory - sourjayne was our Sarah, who worked with me on the magazines and websites a couple of years ago. She has since moved away, but still had an account on the forum. We went ahead and disabled that account, and the tech guys with our ISP will be watching the forum closely for a few days.
Thanks!
Carol

I had trouble yesterday evening (EST) accessing the site and thought it was a problem on my end, nothing like described above, just odd format of postings (without background colors or MJF logo) then I'd get "error on page" or "server unavailable" pages, so I shut down for the night.

All seems okay today, thanks to all for a speedy response.

Thank you, Carol, for all the hard work you and your coworkers do in keeping this a safe place. It is really incredible.

Karin - I get those paypal emails often, and I always forward them on to spoof@paypal.com

To everyone, never do business with paypal unless you have gone to their site and logged in personally. Then you know you are dealing with the correct folks!

Jo,
I had that same thing happen a few nights ago. So, I just got off and when I got back on the next day all was fine.

We deal with this all the time (filtering out all the garbage new users, watching for spam posts, etc.), but unfortunately it seems someone managed to get through again today.
Looks like we're back up and running already, though!
