yes, that is true we always do hand made, but we are trying to do all the kids, aunts, uncles, friends, and cousins...long list...but my sisters and i are really trying to stick to it, our kids are all spoiled and we are tired of cleaning up messes. We need nothing and want for nothing...wouldnt it be nice if all kids needed to be happy were a new pair of mittens and a peppermint stick in their stocking?

It sure would but the commercialism has made that an impossible task for us. I also like craft fairs etc. to purchase handmade at least. Unfotunately in this day and age we need techy things. I wish it was like the old days the world has gone out of control anyway. No cars blah blah, everyone working together, living off land and happier with the simple life. But unfortunately we live in 2007. LOl

some of the perks I do not mind..here i am on my comp talking to you in canada, but you are right. My kids even at times tell me, just throw it away i do not want it anyway. so we are really trying to make sure they are not inundated, quality vs. quantity.

You bet! Cause in reality our lives are pretty easy cause I do not know how those women did all they did without tech. but then they would probably think we should have a lot more done. LOL

It is hard with kids, especially boys that are 18 and 21. Now, my oldest always knew what he wanted for Christmas in June, but the youngest son really was the opposite. I knew what to get them when they were younger, but these days it is harder. I usually buy handmade items for bil and sil from the show that I do at the end of November. I should make the items, but it is so busy with the shows and with Internet sales. Maybe, next year I will start making things during the summer, and then it won't be a problem.

Bev, that is my favorite apron. Love that fabric and rick rack. I like the green fabric too.
Jess really cute beehive.
Carrie, Sharon and Jess... I don't mean to butt in on your convo, but I totally agree. I really hate the commercialism of Christmas... actually commercialism in general. Why do we let "them" convince us that we constantly "need" bigger and better everything. I am really trying to be happy with what I have and not buy unnecessary things. Glad to see that there are others too. Sometimes I feel so weird, because I really don't want to rush out and buy what everyone else thinks that I just can't live without.
sorry to ramble...

I personally don't really want anything for Christmas. I tell the boys the same thing, "The best gift that they give me is a day without arguing." That means more than a gift.

Tks Cheryl-no offense taken- Jess does SOOOO MUCH STUFF it only stands to reason ya thought she did the bee hive.
I am on board with less commercialism- I have a family member-extended- that rushes to get that one over-priced item every year! She pays hundreds of dollars just to say she GOT it for her kids- well now for her grands. Drives me crazy!!

My kids are 31-14 five of 'em plus 7 grands so Christmas could get out of control. We started years ago doing home made but even that gets cluttery.
For the adult kids this year we are buying farm animals for under priviledged families to help them become more self sufficient. Not sure which country yet-hubby is researching.
Fot the grands just a few classic type things and aprons for the girls.
We can't escape it-but everything we do to make it better in our own little corner has to help-if nothing else- it helps our own little corner!

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

I think Birthdays get out of hand too. When I was a kid, we never celebrated adult birthdays. Birthday parties were for kids and their friends. I don't know how many people asked me when I turned 50, "So did you have a big party/male strippers/go on a cruise?"
Why???
People get so fixated on numbers and linear thinking.

Yeah we started simplifying those too.
We instituted a "Sunday afternoon" cake celebration for birthdays to escape the BIG PARTY CRAZE of previously mentioned family member-
even our kids as they were growing up knew it meant lots of family and people-on the Sunday close to their birthday- but gifts were not necessarily part of the deal. It allowed folks to come-unhindered and the kids enjoyed the people more anyhow!
It's one of those things you do when your kids are small that you wonder how they will feel when they grow up-will they feel cheated or appreciate the "people factor" provided.
I'm happy to report that this one turned out good- they do nearly the same for their own kids! YAY!! Score one for well meaning parents!!
Blessings

BTW how about the biscuits?
Are they TOO southern? We love em but I am reminded that what we call good may be quite a bit different.
We love boiled crawfish and fried alligator but not many folks north of here can imagine either on the table.
I forget- but I am curious how they turned out and did you like them.
Blessings

Autumn....I had no self-rising flour....so I basically used your recipe and added the soda, powder and salt....but they were light and yummy!!!!! Butter is definitely the key!!! So many recipes call for Crisco(yuck....banned from my house)

Good girl Naomi- sewing is on the agenda !
Us southern girls eat a bit different huh?

I'm so glad you liked em Bev. I only buy real butter now days. Margarine is banned from here. Still use crisco for our pastry-pie pastry that is. Can't beat it for flaky crust. My girls make the world's best pie crust!

Blessings to you all!

I thought lard was the thing for pie crusts? Of course, I suck at them too! LOL
I hate gas ovens.
I'll be bisquit making at my son's next time I go, since he has an electric oven. ;)

Good going Jessica. I have been tagging items for my show. If all I did was the Internet, then I wouldn't have to do this. I have to write down the item numbers so that I can call my boys, so that they can deduct the items from web store inventory.

Wow, Jess...what are you going to do with that velvet??? And where did you score that big one????

I saw some wonderful linen today at the fabric outlet.....waiting till I get a half price coupon to get it.....absolutely yummy and I want to make a wrap around apron with it ($1.99 pattern from JoAnn's) for that really homespun look....better wash the linen first, though.

Autumn, I banned anything but butter a long time ago....never thought that margarine was healthy. Also, I use a lot of olive oil. I swear by the idea that the more natural the food is, the better.....try to avoid any processed stuff and watch the ingredients carefully! I also try not to use white flour.....BUT you just cannot make a good biscuit with anything but white flour....somehow whole wheat does not cut it for biscuits!!!!

It is true that white flour is the best for biscuits and many other baked goods. As a rule, I try to go with the healthiest ingredients in my food... but, I do love diet coke!! I only drink one a day (used to be more than that, so I am weening away slowly.) I will make those biscuits this weekend too. I made bread yesterday on my day off (never even got out of my pajamas all day!!!) And, I made an apron and curtains for my sister-in-law who I am going to see this weekend!! Glad to see you are all well and making stuff like crazy.
