Bonne~how do you find these. I was on Craigslist today and put in sewing machines. None of those came up. I am thinking I'm going to look at the child's one and the third one on the list. They are not far from me and the prices are just right.

Well, this city is being a pain about letting me have chicks. Well, my son's friend's mom works at city hall and she said she was going to look into it for me to see if I can get them. Yeah! I have to call her tonight to see what she says.

Bonne~I saw that site and there weren't any laws for our state. I know here in Warwick you have to get a special ordinance to have the chickens. It is different in every city in our state.

That's why people need to email the site so she can update it when they find out the laws.

I think that Minnesota treadle machine head is similar to, if not the same as,the one Ronna has. If you go see it, make sure there is a shuttle in it for the bobbin area. They look similar to this:http://pages.sewing-machine-manuals.com/173/PictPage/1922586307.html

I will email them whatever the city tells me when I finally have it all figured out. There are a couple of towns that don't have restrictions, I believe. I'm surprised noone has emailed those in. I know quite a few people who have chickens in these areas. I will tell them to get on there and let people know.

if you just get a few and dont make a big fuss about em, usually you can stay under the radar.

i dont live "in" town, but in town we had a huge deal about it for about 3 or 5 yrs, finally they decided if you keep em in the back and have a privacy fence, blah blah blah, you can have 4

but we have a lot of renegades

i think people just dont want a dirty chicken yard for neighbors

My yard is pretty big and all fenced in. Where I plan to put the chickens is not near anyone else's yard. The two ladies who live behind us would be the closest and they are all for it. there are just a couple of pesky neighbors who think that they can rule the neighborhood.

I agree that most people would not care, but they don't want messy chicken neighbors. Or a rooster!! My neighbors have been very patient with the roosters we have had, but I keep them locked up until everyone leaves for work in the morning. A few chickens are good for the neighborhood.

At some point I'm gonna get a pair of rabbits to furnish my fertilizer. I really don't need the extra cholesterol so I guess I won't have chickens again...too tempting....although I do miss them...lots better entertainment than tv.

Karin, I read your reply before you erased it....I didn't vote for either one of the W's, nor Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton nor this present one...I do respect your opinion and feelings in case you wondered if I would not. Having our freedom of speech and being able to voice an opinion without persecution is what makes this country great. And if we are among friends then we can *agree to disagree* with respect......the best way to find out if friendships are real is to discuss politics and religion...LOL For all the areas of this forum I've been...I consider you ladies friends and so that's why I say what I feel. I figure I'm on safe ground within this topic.

I've got several friends that love to discuss all the hot issues..it gets truly hilarious at times with all the topics flying and all difference of opinions and we all wind up cracking up laughing and saying "Well, no one in Washington has asked for our opinions". A vote just doesn't seem to cover it.LOL "We could all go up there and get this mess straightened out like ordinary people with no political agenda."

Yes, for pete's sake, put your post back up. Don't take down your opinion here, we are all friends. I read it, too. Problems in this country started long before 9/11. We don't do politics at home until recently when John and I are agreeing more often then we used to..so weird, I never thought I would see things the same as he does. Anyhow, everyone is entitled to an opinion, won't make us love you anymore or anyless.

I have bread rising for tomorrow..a la ronna starter and bonne's recipe. The chicks have become so melodic..just love em.

Steph, you will have to be careful in the mtns with a pr of bunnies. I love my buns, fertilizing all yr long!

I have spent a few days clearing off my dining room table..aka..craft table, nearly done. Then to finish my sewing stuff..i could not finish my projects because I had no more room to stack and shove.

Jess and Ruth, They have said on the news that he visited Indonesia as a child, yet supposedly around that time Indonesia was closed to anyone with a U.S. passport!??????

Can you use horse manure for fertilizer? Since our dirt is so lousy here I need to mix in some better soil and fertilizer and hubby is saying it will cost a lot, but my neighbors have horses and it could get manure from them for free! I am determined to plant as much as possible! For all of you that got the issue of Guide to Growing Your own Food, I want the watering wand on page!!!!

Ruth, I have not gotten Apronology yet, but I will let you know when it comes!!

You know Jess I've thought about the bunnies a few times and have wondered if they are gonna get eaten by something much larger than them and me for that matter...There is so much wildlife there that I didn't get at the Alabama house due to the highway. I think I'm not gonna do anything this year and see what spring of 2010 brings. By then I'll be able to meet people with livestock and see how they are doing things.

Monica, I hope your Apron-ology hasn't take the long route to get to you! I had a pattern take 2 months to find me..I figured it was lost forever in the mail system and then mysteriously one day it was in my po box...the envelope looked like it had been drug down the road for several hundred miles but the pattern was ok.

yes monica, horse manure is great. I am picking some up next weekend. HOrse manure, leaves, ash from fires, rabbit manure, chicken manure in small amounts...it is nitro rich, burns some things. Any organic matter scrap from your kitchen, banana peels r great.

my soil is not so great, so i spent 2 yrs beefing it up after my first summer here failed so miserably, so last summer was a winner.

Fresh manure will burn, so you want to age it a bit in the garden, but yes, horse manure is fab. My roses especially love when you feed them horse sh#t.
