My apricot bushes are just starting to bud out their blossoms!! argghhh!!! it's too early!! They'll set fruit, then it will snow storm and that's all she wrote for any crop. We started our raised beds in January one year. Red set up all the timbers around the grassy area we wanted to convert to garden, I laid down newspaper and we dumped in the fill. If you're doing raised beds, just smother the existing grass with paper or plastic and then the dirt/manure. Of course our snow doesn't last around here~usually snows, then melts off, so don't have that to contend with. One tip I have, is to ck your state's extension service online. That will give you growing info for your specific area. Some other states have good info for general stuff. Utah, in particular, is good. Here's a site I like: http://www.your-vegetable-gardening-helper.com/index.html

Thanks Bonne and Jess!! I can't wait to get in the garden. It will be 47 here on Saturday but in the 30's again Sunday. I am just hoping all the snow melts Saturday.
Friday is my birthday. Hubby is taking me out to a nice restaurant for dinner and then we're going to a comedy show. I will have to go to work on Saturday instead. I hate to spend the money but hubby insists.
We just came back from art class and now I need to make supper.

Hello. My plan this morning worked out great for me. I am alloted two pain pills a day, so took both of them and made myself a cup of coffee which I immediatley dropped and got a different caffeine boost than I was looking for. But I have felt pretty well today, got some sewing done, got some stuff moved around in the sewing room and now I am tired! Such a pleasure to feel I can move around a bit...the doctor used to just give me one pill a day, because she said the government keeps an eye on this, but she finally decided I could be trusted with two. The P>A> at my doctor''s office said, you know you should really wean yourself off those. And I said yes, just what I need to be in pain all the time and that will make me a better person. It is hard to function if you have pain all the time, and most doctors know that those of us who deal with pain are not taking the pills to get hig, but to allow us to get through the day in a tolerable condition. Okay, rant over. Sorry...
Bonne, that body butter is luscious, my daughter spotted it and tried it and she was dazzled. we are at that place in the winter where evening entertainment colnsists of w3atching the skin on our hands crack and bleed. I thought my daughter was going to flip out yewsteredaay when we woke up to another foot and a half of snow. As long as the driveway is plowed, I'm ok. I really need to go to the town dirt pile, but i'm afraid I'll get stuck in the snow backing out...my neck doesn't turn that well and the dirt road to the dirt pile is getting narrower and narrower.
Autumn, no baby news yet? I was about three weeks late when my daughter was born, people kept calling me up and asking me what thehell was the problem.
My green Singer, and it is a screaming mint green, is no featherweight. It weighs about 35 pounds,,,,When i went to my quilt retreat one year I brought my Featherweight and hand carried it, I was afraid it wouldn't survive baggage handlers, and at every security scan they would make me take it out. It was so funny, they would look at it like it was some strange museum piece. Now when I go, I borrow a featherwieght from a friend whoo lives close by where the quilt retreat is held.
I am working on getting my yard to be lawn free. There are a lot of little wild ground covers, so I talk to them about working a bit harder to overtake the lawn. One time my tiny mother and I went to this store in Belfast, because they had beautiful wild asterd growing there. We got a couple shovelfuls and now I have a massive plot of them, they grow six feet high inmy yard, they are just such a lovely bloon at summer's end. Years ago I always had a shovel, some water and a couple buckets in my car, there are always interesting things growind on the side of the road. My favorite flower is wild chicory, which grows through sidewalk cracks and the worst soil possible. I never have any luck transplanting them. Last year I planted some seeds I'd taken from some roadside chicory, but I guess my dirt is too good for it.
We should have plenty of running water this spring for the black flies nd lots of stagnant water for the mosquitos. I usually buy a box of cheap cigars to puff on in an attempt to keep the black flies away. That is the only thing I really hate about spring....
Fortunately, we have leftover lasagna from yesterday for supper, so all I have to do is make a salad. I love leftovers, makes my life so much easier. We had curry three days in a row last week. Time to make Mexican food again when the lasagna is done. When spring comes, I'm going to ask Ronna for some of her magical bread starter. I just don't want to kill it.
Hmm, I may need a tiny nap...

Autumn, you found such an excellent keeper....you will so love that girl!!!! Good price too. Mine is a black one with the decals worn some, given to me by that family member. Love my girl.
Bonne, I think we are envious, wow you have had some weather there girl!!!!! Nope still some snow on ground here, I just dream of gardening. But it is sunshining here, that is always a plus.
Hi Karin from GA.....
All righty Karin from Maine, enough of that falling girl, you know your body is tired of that silliness. But oh I am so glad you got farmgirl mail and a cheer up. Was so hoping you had something like that. Yippeee. Ice those knees with your favorite peas.

Note to self: pick up a box of cheap cigars the next time I go shop!! I'm gonna be ready. Those dam black flies...I swell up big time if I get stung by one of them... Karin, I am so there with you on the pain issue...yes, they can only imagine the tude we'd walk in with without having any pain meds to make the days tolerable.
My sister found what I call "the little green machine"...Karin, does your have a plastic cover that latches to the machine for carrying?
Bonne, I'll go check out that gardening link....I'm reading different sites trying to figure out my zone...some say zone 6, some indicate 6a or 7a?? I'm 5 miles north of the entrance to the Smoky Mtn National Park....if you find anything please post a link for me.

After our big snowstorm this weekend, I am so excited about my upcoming garden season. I use newspapers to keep weeds down and to make the rows between the plants. Kenny is making me a cold frame this week so I can get started this month. I never did that before and cannot wait to plant lettuce, carrots and spinach. There is always lots of manure (chicken) here, so I need nothing to add to my soil. All winter, I do thrown my woodstove ashes out to the back garden too. We have about a foot of snow on the ground, but I will see green sometime soon, I hope!!

We are planning on doing 2 raised beds this year, warms up faster so all this tips are excellent.
Karin, you are up and moving for today. Yippee, and that is not the way you should be drinking a cup of coffee.
Me, I am truly enjoying the sunshing. Drove Teresa to dr appointment, she is having massive migraines, this one is 6 days long. They have her knock you on your butt meds to knock it out. By the time I was done with that, I am rather pooped. That just sucks, but thankfully I could drive cause she sure as heck couldn't. See that great part is I get to play with Caleb on these adventures. Can you bleive this he will be a year old tomorrow....amazing.
Teresa said to say Hi to all, her cord to her computer is being replaces because it bellied up on her new laptop. So hopefully she will be on soon. She misses you girls.
Ok, off to feed kitties....every 2 hours...thankfully not throught the night like that.....this girl needs her beauty sleep, and let me tell you it isn't just for a little bit of beauty either.....lol

Suzan: On of my gardening books shows that some people with bad soil just take bags of topsoil, put them in the "garden" whole, cut holes in them and plant the plants right in the holes. They reuse the bags of soil year after year too. It's kind of cool!

Thanks for the link, Bonne

Jess, I won't be there yet...for the Wildflower Pilgrimage..we'll probably just be arriving with another truck or the week after.
Check out the wildflower list that can be observed..I'll be sure to attend in 2010 http://www.springwildflowerpilgrimage.org/wildflower/Information/checklist.cfm
It will be a life long learning adventure...the park and mountains are so awesome and so full of history..we will never run out of things to learn nor things to go see.

The pink featherweight on eBay has a starting bid of $1750, but you can buy it now for $2150, with free shipping. No bidders yet, even if it is for charity. Been rainy here with snow supposedly by morning. Only green I see-the iris are starting to leaf out. Trees have buds, which hopefully won't freeze. Roses are showing signs of budding too, they just don't understand that winter is not over yet. How can it be March already? I'm ready for spring but the days/weeks/months go by way too fast. Happy Birthday to Caleb. A year already?

Happy 1st Birthday Caleb!!!! [font=Comic Sans MS]Good morning!! It is going to be so much fun to grow our gardens together and preserve them. I am so thrilled and can't wait to start. I hope this snow melts this weekend since we will be in the high 40's and even 50's. I hope that doesn't change. I am looking forward to it. As soon as it thaws I want to put newspaper down in the garden area. I need to get some rocks to hold it down. Not hard to find here so that will be great. Bonne~Thanks for the postcard and birthday wishes. I love it. The poem is awesome. You are too sweet.
Trying to get some school work done here. We have gym class today, and I want to make more laundry detergent, and clean the bathroom. I have a couple of loads of laundry done, one basket put away and towels to still throw in the wash.
What's everyone up to today?

I really want to try to plant a garden in pots. My dad plants a garden every year, He ends up with so many weeds I told him this time I will help him with his garden.
I planted a garden once and it came out awesome! I have not been able to do it since because I cant get anyone to till it for me.
Here is a tip I got from a guy who used to sell plants.
To avoid having you rgarden eaten by bunnies, deer, etc..Put water in a gallon jug, add 2 teaspoons of joy dishwashing detergent, shake, let settle..plut some in a spray bottle then spray your plants. After it rains spray again. wash veggies very well before eating. It worked great fo rmine. i didnt have one bunny eat my veggies. Now if by some chance it doesnt work use 2 TBLS of joy instead. It has been so long since I used this recipe I cant recal if its tsp or tbls.
Let us know if it works for you.

Kimberly, my son uses wine barrels for his garden. It works out really well, while my neighbor built planter boxes. We have an area in the back yard which was a sand box for our boys when they were younger. It still has sand, but if dh would allow us to remove the sand, the area would make a great garden area. My dh wants to add on the back of the house, so I think that is why the hesitation, and why my son is using wine barrels.

Didn't mean to slight Ruth on birthday wishes. Hope your evening with your hubby was enjoyable. Nice to for just the two of you to go out once in awhile, even more so with it being his idea. Naomi's brother had a birthday too, think he just turned 8, or two if you take into account his Leap year birthdate. Happy Happy. Now, are there more March birthdays or on to the numerous April celebrations. Several in my family, same at Jessica's house that I know about. We only got a slight covering of snow, but lots in Reno and over the Sierra's. Snow day for lots of kids, either closed or on delay schedule due to the icy roads. I'm staying home until the roads are clear. I'll have to wait until both of us are retired for a garden, but still feeding the coffin size worm bin Larry built last summer. Need to get out and turn the soil I'm sure, but it can wait for a warmer day. |

The sun is out and I am glad of that. I seem to have real;ly frigged up my right arm again. Ho hum. I am going to cut out patchwok squares for the farm block swap and hope to get them in the mail tomorrow. I realize if I do applique it will take forever. I'[ve already managed to lose the one block I finished. Definitely time to get organized...
