Linda~thanks for those links. I love both of the sites.

Jess~that's great!!

I make my own laundry detergent and it costs much less. You have to pay for all the supplies up front. It usually comes out to the price of a large bottle of Tide but you can make so many more gallons of detergent with those supplies. It is definitely better for me. I enjoy making it.

Autumn~It's so funny~my son remembers what page that trebuchet picture is on and sometimes he asks me to go to that page again so he can just look at it.

I took my son to his art class. He loved it. I got lost on the way there. Good thing I left here early. Finally found the place. Yeah!!

I hate it, too. It was not fun and I had to backtrack until I was almost home and try it again. But I finally found it.

Hi Ladies!

I lurk in this thread more than I post, but I thought I would post the math for the laundry soap because since we only have a grocery budget of $116 a month, we have to be really tight with our cash so if something really isn't going to save us money I can't do it.

So the washing soda is $3.50 a box
2 lbs of baking soda is $1.10
Borax is $3
3x Soap per bar is around $1 but lets say $1.50 if you are going to use Castille or the Boraxo Hand Soap.

My recipe is to just dump all those ingredients and mix completely and bam I have soap for 6 months! I use about 1/4 cup a load so
Total cost of ingredients is $12. I use my food processor to grate the bars so I don't have to do by hand.

The total ounces are of the product are (needed for cost analysis):
Washing Soda = 55
Borax= 76
Soap= 16
Baking Soda= 32
Total ounces= 179 ounces

so $12.10 divided by 179 ounces is $.067 an ounce, and since a quarter cup is 2 ounces, each load I do only costs me $.13
Now that is using a lot of soap and the most expensive soap as well. I buy vinegar at Costco for about $3 for 2 gallons and put 1/4 cup in the rinse cycle in the Downy Ball.

So if your Tide or whatever is say $15 (and it is usually more) for 80 loads- then you are paying $.18 cents a load.

So for some people it is cheaper to take a few minutes to make the powder or liquid and save a few cents a load. It works out of us and since I make soap, I can just use the "waste" soap left over from trimming and such so that saves us a lot of money.

Sorry just had to jump in there because I love the laundry powder so much.

yes, tide is the most expensive variety. if you are really good at shopping sales and dont mind what detergent you use, it is actually about the same as doing it at home. doing it at home gives you the satisfaction you did it at home, but there are many reasons why this is not always possibly.

Linda, hope Danny gets to feeling better soon.

Karin, You are having way to many damn adventures this winter. You don't need anymore and being a frozen popsicle is not good for you girl either. Better find those kitty warmers and warm them up as well. Hugs girl.

Bonne thank you for the information, haven't found it yet but will keep hunting. If any of your girls have heard of a Homesteader treadle sewing machine and know where to get into, let this girl know.

Jess, I bored you and put you to sleep....lmao....that was a wonderful gifty from Autumn!!!!

Autumn, it is cheaper for me to make the soap then it is to keep buying the stuff that is out there. Also, my clothes are much softer when I do this. We have extreme hard water so soft is good. I am grating down soap for my next batch, have everything else poured in, no for the muscle burner, grating it....lol.

Ruth, how wonderful that your son loved his art class. I think I would have enjoyed taking a few art classes. Both my brothers are pretty darn amazing with thier art.

Hi Suzanna and Kim.....

Ok, off to grate more, do a little, rest, do a little, rest. Seems to be my motto. But I have to grate it so I can do some wash....ahhh shucks!!!!!

Menopause also affects weight issues Autumn. And from reading Susun Weed's book, the whole menopausal years (pre and post) span quite a long time. **sigh** I can NOT get rid of 10 lbs that came on the last couple years and I hardly eat anything it seems. Primarily you want to make sure you are getting enough calcium before and after, as during , bones slow down production of new cells and seem to ignore the presence of calcium, so you want to "bone up" pre-menopause especially.

Yeah- I do the calcium-and have for years(since my hystorectomy)
never had a weight problem till then.
I actually lost 35 lbs on WWatchers about 5 yrs ago-but same program and MORE exercise now and it doesnt come off.

I do the whole smaller portions, plates,no sugar, very little bread, rice potatoes etc and lots of veggies fresh and cooked but no change-except now a cool extra 5 lbs!!!!
AGGGGG! Makes me crazy!!
Even hubby says I should be losing with the little I eat-he usually brings me to reality about what I eat.
This time he's in agreeement with me that somethings gotta give.

Blessings,
Autumn

Jumping in here....

Hey Ronna...I ordered the Bread Baker's Bible and the Peter Reinhart book on Amazon today....I am going to master this...if it kills me.

Autumn...have you had your thyroid checked??? A doctor's appointment is a good idea.....need to check on hormonal types of things. And YAY for the dress making...I can remember a few months ago when you were hesitant about trying it! That's good ole Bonne's influence at work.

Carrie..hope your shoulder is better! And Carol Sue...hope you are feeling better, too! Too many aches and pains...yikes!

Jess...I can't see you in criminal justice...artsy stuff seems more your forte. Although, when all your kiddos are teens...you might need a little criminal justice strong arm! LOL...kidding.

So, it seems that Suzanne and I are neighbors...her place is fairly close to our farm. Do I hear "farmgirl get-together" one of these days? Perhaps a trip antiquing?

just finished cleaning up from supper. I am working on my apron for the apron swap tonight. I worked on it some yesterday. I need to get it done. I also have a couple of other things I need to finish and mail out by Friday.

Bev~How great that you have a farmgirl close to you. Sounds like you can have a blast.

Autumn~that is definitely something you need to look into. Don't starve yourself either. Take good care of yourself.

Carol Sue~I'm sorry I didn't email you back. I got busy and then forgot. The repair person would come out and it's $50 for him to come out and then $75 for every hour he is here. The part my husband thinks it needs is over $100. Not sure if that is definitely what's wrong with it. It would take at least a couple of hours so that would be almost as much as buying a new one. So right now we just keep it as it is and then maybe get a new one. Not sure yet.

Bev- dr put me on a thyroid pill about 3-4 months ago. She said my thyroid was at the bottom of normal-it needed a boost. My energy level is better but the weight just continues to go up.

I did a stress test last Sept and passed with flying colors-heart was strong and steady!

I mean I really believe that less calories and more exercise means losing weight- but really I cant eat less and I can hardly do much more exercise- I have so many things to accomplish in a day and 40 min is about all I can squeeze in faithfully.

I dont know- but something has to happen.
This week I am committed to getting the 64 oz of water in every day- I have been less diligent with that area- but I dont drink cokes- not even diet ones- I just dont drink much at all.
We shall see- I feel a little bad about being so concerned-it is a bit of vanity- because I am so healthy and happy otherwise- but this weight is dragging me down-literally!

Blessings,
Autumn

Bev~I am so glad that it was a hit. I had wondered about it a couple of times. I'm so glad she liked it.

Autumn~It's not vanity. You need to take care of yourself. Weight does drag you down.

Gals, here is the transportation quilt so far (a work in progress and taking a long time) I started this a year ago, but whenever I would work on it, something would come up.

Bonnie, if I could just finish it. I did not know how I was going to place the squares. My oldest son made a great suggestion. He said,
"Why don't you put all the squares that deal with water together, land together, and sky together."

I wished that I thought of that.
