That's great, Jess!!

So much to do today. What am I doing on here? I have the kids's sheets in the dryer. The dishwasher is running. I already washed what I needed to by hand. My dishwasher is a portable one so I can't really use the sink while it's running. I don't wash anything plastic in the dishwasher. I read in an issue of Mother Earth News that it will leach out chemicals onto the other dishes. I am trying to get rid of as much plastic as I can until then I hand wash all of that.
I have mushroom steak cooking in the crock pot. It is so yummy and tender. I love to cook in the crock pot. So easy.

Now I have to go correct my daughter's math.

Jess: bless your heart...I agree with the opinions...you have enough to do.

It takes time to keep up with this forum! but I love it...

Steph: I agree with your socialism statements...too bad about so many losing retirement.

I am on Social Security and also a County stipend for Danny's adoption...I'll lose that when he goes to a residental home...hopefully not too soon. Then I'll be looking for some sort of job.

Autumn..bread looks great! Maybe I'll make some bread! When we did it always turned out heavy and thick...but we loved it anyway...yum...with butter!

Carol Sue: glad you are taking care of yourself.

Jess: happy about your new part coming in....but I wouldn't buy from JoAnns if I didn't have to. It is the ONLY place to get fabric and I live in a city with about a million people...there is one small place downtown...parking is hard but I should check it out.
Ordering from Ebay might be a good answer....I liked what I have got from there. The quilt shop online is good too.

Whoever had the washer trouble...yea for trying to fix it yourself! I used an old used one for 4 years...got my money's worth. My sweet X husband got me a new one recently...yes, he's extra good to us since he got home from the war. That war changed him in a good way..he said he meditated and thought alot about his priorities.

Danny's got a cold and started sleeping so much that I worried about him...I just watched him sleep wondering what is wrong.
He slept from 5 pm until 7 this morning...except for a short wake-up at 11 pm.
This morning he's got a cold..but no fever, thank God.
He hasn't been sick in a long time.

It's about 5 degrees today...I'm staying in! that plus the wind...burrr

Linda~it's very cold here too and I have to go out. Thank God for our woodstove. I absolutely love how warm it keeps us. Even if it makes I mess, I can live with it. I hate being cold.

Nothing to compare to the heat of a woodstove to keep floors warm especially.

Ruthie, Zote and Kirk's Castile are laundry soaps as well, if you see those available.
Just make sure you use washing soda and borax, otherwise the fabrics get dingy and the washing machine gets ruined with buildup.

Powdered Homemade Laundry Detergent

1 c. grated Zote (or Fels-Naptha, or Kirks Castile)
1/2 c. washing soda
1/2 c. 20 Mule Team Borax
1 c. SUN Oxygen Cleaner (cheaper than Oxy-Clean)

(recipes from "Garden Web.com"

Mix together and store in an air-tight container. Use 2 T. for light loads and 3 T. for heavy loads. Be sure to pre-treat any stains.

Yet one more recipe: (You could easily use Zote for the Fels Naptha.)

Ma's Liquid Laundry Soap
2/3 bar Fels Naptha - grated
2/3 bar Kirks Castile Soap
2 c. washing soda
2 c. borax
1/4 c. glycerin
2 gallons hot water
20-30 drops essential oils (suggested: Rosemary, Lavender, Tea Tree Oil, or Grapefruit Seed Extract - or combination of)

1. Place 1 quart of water into a medium pot over medium heat. Add the soap and stir until melted.

2. Add the Soda and Borax and mix until the mixture thickens.

3. Place one 1/2-gallon of Hot water into a three or four gallon bucket and then pour in the soap mixture and stir well.

3. Add the glycerin and essential oils to the mixture and fill to the two gallon mark on your bucket or simply add another 5 quarts of hot water.

5. The glycerin acts as a stain remover and the essential oils suggested have anti-bacterial and/or antifungal properties.

6. Set in a safe place (out of reach of pets and kids) to cool.

7. Stir and use 1/2 c. to 1 cup per wash load depending on size and level of soiling.

8. Use directly to pretreat stains.

Our woodstove is wonderful - it seems so much warmer at lower temperatures. I will gladly clean up the mess! We bought it used for $125 20 yrs ago when we built the house - it's still going strong. Hubby is fanatic about care of the stove and chimney, that has probably helped. Anyways we have definitely got our money's worth out of it and then some!

Linda, Hope Danny is feeling better, sometimes sleep is what is needed.

We have been without power since Sunday. I kept calling the power company and leaving my automated response, everyone on my road got their power back last night. This morning after 20 or so0 calls to the power company I decided to call the police and they hooked me up with a live being, and ten minutes ago the power finally came back. It will take a long time to warm up, but I;m hoping no frozen pipes. Zan and I are frozen right through. I suppose I should check and see if any kitties need to be defrosted. The clothes in the washer are frozen. Winter. I'm tired of it.

I did drive in town this morning to get hot coffee for me and Zan, I have a gas stove, but it is just so cold in the kitchen I figured we needed to warm up in the car for a bit. The furnace is working, but it will be hours before it really warms up. We got almost two feet of heavy wet snow. What a mess. I bet I won't be getting my car up the driveway until the end of mud season.

I almost wish I had a woodstove again, but I really ruined myself with loading one up for years. Now I just want to move somewhere warm, but that won't last long. I am a fan of the seasons and was never happy living out west for the few years that I did.

Okay, I'm going back to bed for a bit to warm up.

In between storms (weather and life), did you get the treadle in the house?

Bonne- thanks! How did you know I was getting ready to ask someone for the recipe???
This is my next adventure!!!
A friend recently made detergent and said it didn't save any money-not sure why????
She actually said it cost her more-why do you think?

Blessings,

Karin!! How awful!
I just don't know how you girls do it!!!
The slight winter we do have wears me out!!!!!!!!
I need heat and sun on my face!!!!Makes me feel healthy.

I also LOVE my woodstove-we live in the woods so have our own supply of firewood ready all the time-just have to cut and split during the summer.
Propane is about $3 a gallon so I don't care to be burning it !!!
Woo!Hoo! No school today!!! Fat Tuesday EVERYTHING is closed!!!
It's almost as shut-down as Christmas!!!!

Blessings,
Autumn

Autumn, borax and washing soda aren't cheap and it's somewhat arduous a task to grate soap, PLUS a cup of vinegar is recommended for the rinse cycle to cut any soap scum that remains, plus keep your washer clear of gunk. All these items add up~you have to be somewhat committed to washing with soap, but it IS better for the environment.

Kim, I love your changed blog http://paranormalunderground.blogspot.com/
Paranormal stuff is so fascinating to me, I just love it!

Kewl booklet, Linda. The sewing machines look like mine.
I'm going to add a link on my blog to her site.

Autumn, I use Borax, Washing Soda, Baking Soda and Zote soap and it costs about $10-$11 for all of it and it makes enough for about 12 gallons and I use a half a capful in a large load! I don't know what recipe your friend is using, but it costs about $1.00 a gallon and I also use white vinegar for softener and that runs about $3.50 a gallon and it leaves the clothes smelling very fresh and clean!
