Good! Now mine is failing! lol The last 2 batches have had very low rise. Red thinks I'm pushing it too fast and should let the starter build up for a few days. Will have to let it rest for a while and build it's intensity. I've been baking every coupla days this past week.

Jess, thanks for helping out Bev. I was not online all day and when she emailed she was pulling her hair out, I was hoping someone had been able to jump in and help.
We played plumber today, drains in the sinks in our bathroom were sluggish. I used baking soda and hot vinegar, which took care of that problem. Larry decided they needed new drains, cause the plugs didn't work anymore. Biggest part was cleaning out everything under the sinks, especially mine. His stays pretty neat with the essentials and bathroom cleaning supplies and that's it.
It was embarrassing to see the gunk that accumulates in the drains, but it's all scrubbed and back working again. Nice and neat under my sink took even if he does think I have too much stuff. So be it.
Back to work tomorrow, was nice to take a week off and get over most of this upper respiratory bug I've had.

Autumn, I'm not really knowledgeable on baking with whole wheat. Do know it will take longer to rise, so needs more gluten development (kneading) to help it along. Might suggest half white flour/half wheat and go from there. You seem to be doing just fine.
Hope to read a good report from Bev with Jess' friendly tips. It's not hard and surely she can get a good loaf of bread too, with the sourdough.
Jess, grandson is in Indy at the hotel, son is headed back to Atlanta for the second trailer tonight. He called me a bit ago. I'll email you his phone number so you can make contact for Supercross with the kids on Saturday.

ok you gals have me wanting to take my batch of Ronna's sourdough starter out of the fridge and get baking..now I will admit that I usually just use the sour dough starter that same day that I am baking and that what I do is generally add a cup of all purpose flour and a cup of water to my starter, let it set and come to room temp.(Sometimes I get impatient and don't even wait for it to warm to room temp.)
then I take about 31/2-41/2 cups of all purpose flour, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 egg, 1/3 cup shortening..mix all together. Then yes..I use a yeast packet..rapid rise, and I mix that with a few tablespoons of warm water. Pour that over into my dough..and then I add about a cup of the starter..maybe close to 2 cups..It makes a really sticky dough..I mix this all up with a plastic spoon..no need to knead it as it is a sticky dough... then I divide the dough between two glass baking pans that have been greased with real butter. I then take a real wet dish towel and zap it in the microwave for about 2-3 minutes to get it really hot and steamy/set my pans on top of that and shut the microwave door/let it set for about 30 minutes then I reheat the towel for about a minute..2 more times over the course of about an hour and a half..by then my bread dough has risen to the top of the pans. I very carefully set the pans onto a cookie sheet, being careful not to jostle them.Have the oven preheated at 350 degrees, bake the bread for 30 minutes.
Very yummy!
yes, I do know that "true" sour dough does not need yeast..but I can tend to be impatient sometimes and don't want to wait a long time for the bread to rise. This way I generally have 2 loaves of bread in 2 hrs time.
So very yummy and that classic sourdough taste in no time, and yes my bread has a nice golden crust and slices up nicely for sandwiches. Very good with ham and provolone with a little butter on the sandwich..zapped in the microwave just until the cheese starts to slightly melt..ahhh..delish!
By the way..thanks Ronna..that sourdough starter is still going strong/has a good "hooch" to it that I simply stir back in and has a terrific sourdough smell.
It stays in my fridge in a tupperware container when not being used and wow..its good stuff.
I think I'll just have to bake some bread tomorrow.

good morning girls.

hi carol sue.

thanks for the numbers ronna. more wacky family stuff going on, we will see how my week goes.

i feel like moving to a remote location in Montana with my kids and hubs and not telling anyone where I am, except you girls of course. I have discovered in my family the more responsible and stable you are, the more crap they think they can dump on you! I thought I had enough responsibility as it is without outside help. GGGGRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Hey Autumn, how's Sara(h) holding up? Baby should be here soon. I am superstitious, can't use babe's name until I see the whites of it's eyes. Am I weird? Hmmm...dunno...probably. Anyway, I dreamt about your daughter last night, so I was wondering how she is hanging in there, waiting!

Still waiting!! They were here last night and she is feeling really well just tired of all the "are you still here?" comments from folks.
She sees the dr this morning at 11- actually the dr is out of town till Wednesday so I hope she holds off till he's back. He has been so wonderful to her.
She is a sweet sweet girl and the wrong kind of dr could have had her in tears and fear with a bad bedside manner.
I just hope he gets back quickly!!!!
I'll let ya know as soon as I know she's in labor.

Jess-I know what you mean about the family stuff- I have had to distance myself -which is difficult to do when you physically are nearby- but it's the only way I could have a life.
I have no family except my mom and dad left and they are no needs type of people so far.
It's the in-law part of hubby's fam that can make me crazy.

They are "in charge" people and like to tell me what to do and when to do it"since I just sit home all day"and they have real jobs.
Makes me crazy!!! We help care for my f-i-law and they seem to feel superior in knowing how that is best done.
I just ignore the whole thing and do what hubby and I decide to do-there's no makin them happy anyway!!!

Blessings,
Autumn

Good morning!!!

Autumn~your bread looks great. Yummy!! I hope that your daughter makes out ok at the dr. I had a really nasty dr. in the practice when I was pregnant. He would come in, do his thing, not even talk to you or acknowledge you. I requested not to see him again.

Jess~So sorry to hear about the family trouble. It is such a pain. I have had some issues with my own. Like Autumn said they think you just sit at home and don't do anything. They want me to do all kinds of things for them and I can't because of schooling. It doesn't help that someone else in the family who homeschools is always willing to do everything they ask and makes me look bad. Oh~well. I know for sure that she doesn't hardly put in any time with schooling her kids and that's not what I want. I often dream of moving far away!!!!!!!

We are back to school this week. I have so many things for activities with the kids.

I made Ronna's bread and it came out great!!!!!! I didn't take a picture. It was late when it came out of the even but we started eating it right away. It was so good and warm. Thanks, Ronna and Jess and Bonne for all the bread help.

yes, everyone thinks since i am home all day that i must need things to do!

and if i say anything about it they tell me there are drugs that would improve my outlook...what?!!?

i am happy with my life, just not the crap they pile on me!

Although she needs no advice at this point..a warm tub soak and a foot massage would be a great idea.

I'll pass it along-Jess.
She listens to Farmgirls-
we aren't on her ignore list so far!

Her hubby's side is barely 40 and dad is excited about being a grandparent and Mom is...well having an age crisis about being a g'ma-so they are both anxious and excited. It's all new to them and novel.
This side is a bit more "seasoned" and knows that novel wears on your nerves when you are"producing a new toy"
Know what I mean?

oh i know all about it, only too well, poor girl. but when it is novel, you get all kinds of goodies. Our family hardly even bothers calling about em these days.

Autumn, The bread looks delicious! Wish mine came out looking like that...thinking about your kids, wish them luck. Yep, I love my g'children but I'm glad to only see them a couple days a month. Been there, done that, now it's the kids turn to raise theirs...

Jess, I've been where you are with the "family" thing - you are totally correct, the more capable and responsible you are the more is expected...I just learned what my limits are and learned to stand up for myself and say "no more"! Only way you can stay happy and sane.

OOoh-oh.....her MIL is having an "age crisis"? So this baby is "all about HER"?(the MIL) Hope not~those kinds make poor MIL's. You know what they always tell you about your first baby "taking a while, so don't hurry to the hospital"? Don't count on it.LOL Hope she has an easy delivery~lucky to have a mom like you Autumn, there for support.
Awesome looking loaves Autumn!! Just don't push your starter into wanting bread 3 or 4 times a week~LOL
Ok, my auntie that bakes bread recommended a lady to me. Beatrice Ojakangas who has a book called "Great Whole Grain Breads" (listed here: http://beatrice-ojakangas.com/cookbooks.htm )
I may break down and get it, as any whole wheat breads I've tried to make turn into heavy doorstops.

Autumn~it's true~my kids are not a novelty. My mom always says she's sick of kids and they don't pay much attention to mine. Oh! well~their loss. They always have my sister's kids and are always bragging on them. Then when they see my kids at family functions they comment on how they don't pay attention to them. They hardly know them and are not comfortable around them.

Bonne~my whole wheat breads do the same thing.
