Yeah Wally world does have some great markdowns- but here's my deal;
I feel like I'm getting ready - hoarding things almost! I am spending money trying to save money- does it make sense?

Back in the 80's( dreaded 80's) this area had a severe crash- thousands lost jobs and 1/3 of the population moved out of Calcasieu parish( we have parishes, not counties)- the saying was-"The last one out of Calcasieu Parish, turns out the light".
We are a chemical, oil, gas and related industrial area- when layoffs start everyone suffers-there are no other jobs when the plants shut down.
Anyway- we lost our house then-hubby lost his job and we moved out-to Tenneessee- too.
Anyway, I dont feel worried but i am pouncing on deals that would normally not even interest me. Anybody else having this kind of reaction to the CONSTANT negative reports on the economy?

Blessings,
Autumn

Autumn,I think it's easy to get caught up in the news reports! It's hard sometimes to stay sane when all you hear is how bad things are! Sometimes I wonder that if things just crash, do I have enough food! I have tons of fabric so I don't worry about clothes because I could make some, but it is scary wondering what could happen and it doesn't sound good when the President is telling the Senate to get a move on signing the stimulus bill or we will never recover! I remember when Sharon Steel closed and they had an %18 un-employment rate in Sharon, Pennsylvania and now DHL is pulling out of Wilmington,Ohio and most of the people in that town work there!

I think someone ought to start a good news channel where it could only be good news!!! I would watch it!!

Bonne, Merle Haggards birthday wish makes so much sense for someone who has dementia. May you live as long as you want and want to, as long as you live. Have to let it sink in. He said that to a quite elderly lady when he was at Lake Tahoe some years back. One of my all time favorites. My son said he was going to go catch his show tonight if he could. Son is with SuperCross motorcycle series driving transport and they're in Anaheim Ca this weekend. Merle is playing right there on the same acreage, tonight only.
My ex husbands grandma often talked of still having her marbles and she was sharp right up the the end a bit past 90. More so than her daughter, my MIL.
It is so sad when the mind is gone but the body is still strong. Had an aunt who lived at least 10 years past the loss of memory. Sad and my uncle spent the fortune they'd made for private 24 hr nurses. He ended up in a one room former hotel turned retirement home with virtually nothing.
Peace to you and your mom.

Autumn ~ My oldest is 5yo and just getting excited about reading and is spelling 3-4 letter words on his own (or fabricating them out of legos), so I still have a few years. (And Jamie's the serious one, Adam's the goofy fearless one I believe - the Jato-pack episode is still our favorite one...)
Yes, I'm stocking up on things I think I'll need. Not random things like picture frames or wire hangers, but homesteading type books and canning supplies and such. Worse comes to worse, we have enough food and clothing. Best case, we get deals on stuff if/when the dollar does the deflation thing even more to help ride out even more inflation and we know how to do things.
My Depression-era grandmas must've made more of an impact on me than we intially thought. My one grandma probably rolled over in her grave when gas hit $4/gallon. This was a woman who would feed a house full of guests on $40/week at the grocery store (and $5 down the street for a flat of eggs and probably $15-$20 at the dairy down the street) because of her coupons and pantry and freezers. She couldn't even stand to pay more than $10 for a dress.

Sharon ~ How exciting about the preview! I think that would be so much fun.

Ruth ~ Here you go. http://www.xanga.com/LannaM Nothing but photos of seeds and kids and cooking as of late. Working on cooking out of my freezer/pantry to gear up for the coming season so I actually have room to put things.

Bonne ~ Heehee, I have a lot of Irish in me from every which way. I'd hazard a guess I knew what they did... I'm sorry about your mom. I hope she had a lovely, full life in all the years she had. Love the zebras! Too funny.

Nope, no sewing yet. *sigh* I've done dishes and laundry and can see the floor that needs to be vacuumed, I'm calling it a success for the day. Unless Iowa gets funky weather in a few hours, hubby should be on his way home, yeehaw!

And today my neighbor gave me the best present I could've asked for - her garden!
I'm so excited to have more space to plant, and she's psyched about it too (their family is back and forth between here and Scandinavia, and they'll be gone come planting time and at other weird times) since they'll still sorta have a garden. So I'm currently obesessing about it. She's so much fun, even though her oldest is only 5 years younger than me.

Ronna, I have a dumb question! Now that I have the starter what do I do with it?

Lanna, I am so excited for you to have a garden!! I wish I had the space, but I think I am going to try to plant a few things in containers!! In Ohio where I grew up we had a huge garden that was bigger than my whole yard is now!

Good morning, ladies~I'm working on a valentine's giveaway for my blog. I'll let you know when it's done.

It is so darn cold here. 14 degrees right now. The high yesterday was 19. I have to go to work tonight and I'm not looking forward to it. Hate to go out in the cold. I also banged my leg yesterday and have a purple welt the size of a fist on my thigh. It's so sore.

Bonne~(((HUGS))))~sorry to hear about your mom. My grandmother had dementia. The only reason I shop at Walmart is their prices. Although I feel terrible because I know that they are not the best company. It's what I can afford sometimes.

Lanna~I am trying a larger garden this year, too.

Autumn~I'm trying to stock up, too. It just seems that lately they are eating me out of house and home.

I'll let you know when to check my blog for the giveaway.

Autumn, we've been stockpiling staples for a while now. Hubby is especially keen on expecting a "revolution".
He just reconfirmed the other day where we were to "meet up" in case we got separated with no communication.
Always has a plan. I'm mildly skeptical but go along with it~learned to can and smoke food.

Bonne, I'll be glad to get settled so I can build my provisions (again)....I always have supplies in every direction to last atleast 6 months and sometimes a year..I love a walk in pantry.....I guess I got that from my dad who remembers the people walking the roads looking for a meal after the depression. And he remembers how on some evenings his mother or aunt one of them would not be hungry. He realized when he got older that is was because there wasn't enough food for everyone to be able to eat that night. Thomas sees how it bothers me to not have lots of provisions on hand right now. That's gonna change soon.

I read ten pages of the treadle thread, wow I never realized all the goodies stashed in people's barns, sheds, houses. I wish I had been able to extricate my treadle before my car was hauled off to the dump. Sounds like the insurance company doesn;t want tp sign off on my car so I have to get it towed to a place fifty miles away so they can plead my case.

I'm depressed now, but I'm working on the last of my winter minis, I apologize in advance, they look a bit sketchy to me, but I can assure you the polka dot ones are sweeeet....

Karin, I'm so sorry for the BS with the insurance, the garage and the frustration of being without your car....and the fact that your treadle has been hauled away with it.

I know your mini's are gonna be great..If you are like me..I'm my worst critic.

Yes, I love having a walk-in pantry~best thing about this house.
If you ever see used ammo cans, they make great storage containers for things you need to keep sealed airtight.
Our local ranch supply sells them for 6 or 7 bucks and we store some staples in them like dried Amish type soups, dried milk,
etc.

Oh, Karin, I think every family has(had) a treadle in the family, and lots of people still have them as a piece of decorative furniture, if it hasn't been relagated to the garage or basement. Rarely used though. That's when Craigslist comes in~easy to sell, and easy to find one.

I have been stocking up a bit, too. I don't have a walk in pantry but I do have a small closet that I am filling up and I bought a cabinet to store things in my basement. The basement at this house stays pretty dry. My other house, forget it, too much humidity. I'm glad I don't have that here.

I'm glad you are all signing up for the giveaway on my blog. I love those little hearts and wanted to pass them on. I got the idea from looking through the last issue of Somerset Life.

I just got back from the grocery store. Everything is put away and I had to mop my floor. It is still a mess outside. Today we hit 30 and there is some melting. We tracked in all kinds of mud bringing in all the groceries. Saturday and Sunday it will be in the 40's. I hope all of this melts. We are also having a large delivery of wood so we'll put out there stacking it all. Good thing it won't be cold.

Karin~I am so sorry to hear about all the trouble with the insurance company. It is so frustrating!!!!!!!!!!

Can't wait until I save to get my treadle. Hubby was looking at an air hockey table online. It was $50 on sale. I said not now~no treadle~no air hockey table.

Bonne~I know he doesn't even want if for himself. He's not at all selfish. He just always wants to give the kids things. He never had anything growing up. It really was sad for him. It's for the kids but we don't have the room for that in this house and we don't have any money. No reason to get it.

Looks like everyone is catching up on swaps. Sew sew girls
It snowed to this morning then at lunch the sun came out and melted it all. I looked at a couple bushes and they had buds so I don't think spring is far off.

Miss Steph, check this one out. I just measured my largest one and it's 4" also, but all stones are round. Also have a stretchy belt of shiny black "scales" with a 3" across waterfall rhinestone buckle. Drop is a bit over 4". No missing stones, don't see any darkening either.

holy #@&t, that brooch went for $161 at Goodwill. Now I'm trying to remember what I paid for this one...know it wasn't a dollar. My son offered to be my eBay lister, should have taken him up on it when he had time. Maybe his fiance will do it. yeah, I can do it myself, just need the initiative. Nice word for "stop procrastinating".
