Steph~I think you would love her stuff. They are like an odd couple. So funny. Both very sweet and great neighbors.

Suzanne~just put that furniture in storage and get yourself a sewing room.

See, we already have Ruthie trained to the right way of thinking.
If you really want a treadle, you will find one & you will MAKE room.
Suzan, How much you want to spend depends on how much $$ you have
TO spend~what shape the machine is in~does it need parts? does it work? If you look around at enough of them you get an idea of what they are going for in your area. You don't want to necessarily want to blindly buy one without learning something about treadles first because you need to know what to look for (see Treadlin' along thread links). My first one I blindly bought and wound up donating it. Only pd $25 so was no great loss. It's easiest to find parts and info on Singers because they kept such good records and they were most widely distributed, so there are a lot of them still out there.
Do some homework first would be my advice. There is so much info online anymore. It's been a year and a half since I first started researching treadles. I learned the most in my first month of reading and playing with them. You have to enjoy tinkering with machines to some degree, but actually they are very basic.

Steph, don't thrift shops back there put a bunch of watches in a bag for a price? I bought the one bag cause there were two really cool old watches in them, think about $8 or 10 for nearly a gallon bag. I don't usually look, but those bags go half price and then $1 too. Also ones with same amount of costume jewelry good for crafting. I'm going to try to be good, been way too bad the past week and besides, have mini aprons that have to be sewn, so can't spend extra time in Reno. Somewhere, I have a bunch of costume stuff of mothers, when I find it, it might be of use too. Only want the good stuff of hers, most of which I bought her over the years. Said I was going to buy her what I'd like to inherit and damn if the sister didn't think it should all be hers. She got the big cocktail ring mothers gentleman friend bought mother and that's it. It was of value, but no sentiment like my grandmothers rose gold lovers knot ring from around 1900.

Ruth, a real life Oscar and Felix next door, that must be interesting. It's amazing what people collect and also what their heirs think is junk and donate. My uncles were going to donate my grandmothers trunks with all her wordly possessions to the Salvation Army and my sister got wind of it and got it all. I need to try to make contact with the former neighbor of mothers who had/has my grandmothers sewing machine. Probably a Singer, was converted to electric from treadle in the 40's. I didn't have room for it at the time and mother traded it for an ugly plastic/metal dinette hutch.

Steph is right...watches would be met with screams of excitment and joy...haha...
I never told ya'll...
Dad and I found a great pocket watch last month...with the intent of taking it apart...triple hinge gold case..engraved front and back w/ flowers, and the front has initials..all around just beautiful inside and out...we looked it up...made in the late 1800s, and when we wound it.....tick tick tick tick.....the only problem..it doesnt run all the time(it needs cleaned, actually kind of grimy inside), and it is missing the two second hands, and the glass cover...but when it does run(haha), it keeps time wonderfully(hour hand)...

I've been working on my minis. They are going rather quickly now. I have most of them hemmed, then it's just a running stitch to gather them, add the waistband and lace. It is going faster now that I'm getting the hang of it. Probably not as fast as all of you but I'm plugging away. Now I'm thinking of all the other things I want to sew.

Ronna~try to get that machine back. Won't your sister share with you? So terrible that it was traded for the ugly hutch.

Ruth, if I could make contact with mother's former neighbors in Burbank, they moved to NoCalif long time ago. I'd doubt if she still has it, but one never knows. My sister has most of our grandmothers stuff, but that's okay-grandma liked her and didn't like me cause I called her on cheating when we played cards..many many times. I also did not play into her drama "I'm the queen" stuff. I have her heavy gold ring and all the family photos, plus her sewing bag and a few other things that mother had. Let's say my sister does not play well with others :) If she's not the center of attention and getting everyone to do exactly what she wants, she's a real witch. I let her lead the way for years and when I decided to stand on my own two feet and confront her, she didn't like that at all. Used to tell me I was adopted and our parents loved her more cause she was their "real" kid. Mother never knew this until we were grown cause I was never a tattle tale.

Hey Monica, when things go bad, SEW..I feel better tonight about all of it...so many things I cannot control the outcome of...like making people do what they are supposed to do. And me not being there is a recipe for things not getting done properly. By springtime I should be there with my stuff and all this misery behind me.

Ronna, NO...to my discontent I do not ever come across bags of watch parts or watchs nor do I ecer come across bags of the 1940's - 1950's costume jewelry. The clip on earrings that I like can be found at collectible shops. I hear the prices you get stuff for and I want to cry! It doesn't happen around here at that price...In the Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg area I have high hopes since there are junk and collectible shops all over the place...just hoping they don't have big prices on all of it.

Ronna~OMG~she does seem like a real witch. I don't get along too well with my sister either. She's getting a Masters and is very educated and I'm not. She reads and learns and I just sew and crochet. Oh! well. She is also 11 yrs younger. She has two kids and is divorced from her lousy ex. She almost expects all of us to jump and help her with the kids while she's in school because she's not with him and he's a jerk. She runs my poor parents ragged. They both work and then come home to take care of her kids. Her kids are also very high maintenance~If you know what I mean.

Stephanie~I am forever gasping at the prices Ronna pays for her finds. It's amazing. I don't find those deals here. Only in that little antique store sometimes and now it's closed. :(

Steph, last time I was in that area and shopping was about '93 and found a few out of the way places with some good stuff mixed in with the junk. My sister says there are still no good thrift shops in Knox area, but she does not know how to look for the good stuff anyway. I used to be her personal shopper for business clothes when she was a wallpaper rep. Let me know down the road when you're ready for some care packages. When my kids ask me to look for a certain something, I'll usually be able to find it within a couple days. I'll bet most of the shops in that area have priced to sell to the heavy tourist traffic, most were even back then.

Ronna- yes, I do need to take it to be cleaned...should have said, yes it is a ladies watch. and it is the second and minute hands that are missing...Also an Elgin, found a site where someone has all the info documented, including a search for serial numbers, if I remember correctly this one was a lot of like 9,000 made in 1899...would have to double check to be 100% about how many were made.
I'll have to get some pictures of it...you all would not believe how beautiful even the inner workings are...ended up getting it as one of my Christmas presents...hehe...it is keeping time really well right now...just wound it a few hours ago...amazing....no actual energy source...a spring...I mean seriously...dude.

alrighty...gonna take a look at the jewelry Ronna..whew...certainly alot of it!

wow...177 pages!? quite the talkative bunch we are!

Naomi is the pocket watch open or closed case? They are so beautiful. Mine was "missing" for about a year and then found in the wallet coin section in the purse I'd been using all that time. Right now, not sure it it's in the safe or with other jewelry, maybe should check. I also have the watch my Dad gave my mother in the early 40's, just sentimental value. She had his and her names engraved on the back, surely he didn't. He probably didn't even give it to her, she likely chose it and told him it was his gift to her...mother was that way. That's how she got the "not attractive to me" but pricey diamond ring from the gentleman friend. I have the receipt where she signed the charge on his card (he had a form of parkinsons and was way too shaky to write anything). Term in the 50's was a Gold Digger for people like that and not something I admired or wanted to do. Loved mother but didn't like her all the time, same as with my husband and kids. facts are facts

Ronna it is a triple hinge...basically front pops open to show the face, and then the back has an engroved part that flips open, and behind that is another flap that pops open to get to the insides...the knob to wind it is below the loop...aha! it is called a Triple Hinge Hunter case..knew there was something extra there...
this is the type of case(link below)...mine doesnt have the gold on the face, or the design on the edge...but the actual design on the case front and back is flowers, and the initials ELW...it has been serviced before, as on the first flap on the back there is a number scratched in...
here is how it opens...
