I have heard the the 1/3 cup low suds soap, 1/3 cup washing soda, 1/3 cup borax, 1/3 cup baking soda recipe works great! You just need to use between a teaspoon to a tablespoon for each load.

There are "recipes" for making either liquid or powder detergent. I use them both in my HE front loader along with vinegar in the rinse section. I think our clothes come out even cleaner than useing the store stuff. Here are the recipes:
Powder:
1 C grated Fels Naptha Soap 1/2 C Washing Soda 1/2 C Borax
For light load, use 1 Tbs. For heavy or heavily soiled load, use 2 Tbs.
Ivory Soap, Deodorant Soap, and beauty bars can be substituted for the Fels Naptha Soap. Liquid detergent can be used as a pretreater for stains.
Essential oils can be added to soap for fragrance.
Liquid:
1/3 bar Fels Naptha or other type of soap (as above) 1/2 cup washing soda 1/2 cup borax powder
Grate the soap and put it in a sauce pan. Add 6 cups water and heat it until the soap melts. Add the washing soda and the borax and stir until it is dissolved. Remove from heat. Pour 4 cups hot water into a bucket (I use a 5 gal. one). Add your soap mixture and stir. Now add 1 gallon plus 6 cups of water and stir. Let the soap sit for about 24 hrs. and it will gel.
You use 1/2 cup per load.
Sounds like a lot to do for the liquid, but really it goes fast. Hope this helps.

Debra, if you can't find the Arm and Hammer Washing Soda in your area (I can't find it any where here in the Black Hills), you can order it from Soaps Gone Buy on-line. That's what I have to do. I get it in like 4 days.

I use Tasha's "Gaiasrose", a farmgirl who frequently posts on here. I have a front loader, and I LOVE the sandalwood scent. YUM!
She's taking some time off the board maybe right now, but should be back soon. Look up her stuff, it's great for you and great for our mother earth!
