Hi ladies. I don't usually do this, but I am taking my turn to rant here. A week ago I was walking my two dogs when all of a sudden this large yellow dog came running, snarling, growling and barking at us. He charged my Newfie, who stood her ground and then passed her up and attacked my Bernese Mtn. dog, Sadie. His owner did not rush in to get the dog, but took his good ole time. Meanwhile, the dog tried to grab Sadie by the throat. She pulled away, and the dog lept on her haunches biting her there. My husband pulled the dog off and the owner grabbed it. Meanwhile, my Sadie who is always submissive was terrified. (I was a screaming meemie, too.) One of the neighbors called the police and we filed a report (apparently nothing has been done about this non-neutered viscious male dog as of yet).

So, one week later, I find a large lump on Sadie's haunches and another on her chest. The one on her chest is a tumor, but the one on her haunches was a big hematoma that had to be drained so that it did not abcess. There were big teeth marks around the hematoma! Meanwhile, I am heartbroken that she has had to have this done.

At the time of the incident, we talked to the guy about having his dog neutered. He played dumb and said he did not know what we meant. Apparently his wife has said that he does not want to neuter his males because it might change their personality. I say.....ok, let's change that, because right now it's not so good! What is it about some men that own male dogs and think that if their dogs are neutered it will make them less manly? Do some guys identify with their dog's testicles????? From what I have seen, un-neutered males tend to roam more and are more aggressive. I guess I feel that if you are not going to breed your dog, then have them neutered. Especially if they are this aggressive!

Well, I have decided to take this to the limit. I am sending the bill for the surgery, the pictures and a statement from the vet that this was caused by a dog bite...to the police in hopes that they give the guy a citation for failing to keep his dogs under control. I usually just let things go, but not this time. My poor Sadie has to suffer unnecessarily because of this guy's ignorance....oh and by the way, he has another un-neutered male dog. Apparently, he cannot leave the dogs in the same room together, or they will tear each other apart. What a BOZO!!

Keep Smiling.....Bev

Your Sadie reminds me of my Owie, a big gentle giant. I am so sad/angry that this happened. My dh is the director of an animal shelter and was at one time the education director of the KY Humane Society(they 'downsized' and decided that education wasn't their mission!). I know that neutering changes a dog's disposition! FOR THE BETTER! I rescued a pit bull who was agressive and had him neutered first thing. Even though he was already about 2 yrs. old, he calmed down almost immediately about 85%. We have a huge problem with dog fighting in Louisville. And I have noticed in the country town where my farm is located, most people there don't have their dogs neutered, either. It's near the top of my 'things that upset me so much my blood pressure goes way up'. I would probably try to pursue this, but don't be too surprised if it goes nowhere. What few laws we have in the city don't seem to be enforceable. I guess that's why I see so many cases involving agressive dogs in those small claims shows on television.

Just before I had to stop walking my dogs in the city I was actually carrying some sort of stick or something in case of stray dog attack! I have a shoulder injury and I was afraid not only of losing control of one of my dogs as they ran for their lives, but of being able to defend one of us against another dog. Louisville Metro Animal Control in Louisville is only just recently getting funding to allow them to enter the PREVIOUS century. You pretty much had to pen up a stray dog yourself before they would come and get it. And PS - Judge Judy would definitely read those idiots the riot act!

I think you are doing the right thing. Hopefully you will be stopping this from happening to another poor dog. A problem can't be fixed if no one is aware of it.

How sad! I hate hearing stories about innocent animals being attacked by vicious dogs... not to mention people! It seems to happen a lot lately. I hope Sadie will be all right and that jerky owner pays for everything! I know it's illegal, but it makes you want to carry pepper spray or mace, just in case.

Sadie is a Bernese Mountain Dog....84 lbs...on the small side for the breed. She is my best and most truest friend in all of the world. She lives to be near me and spends all of her days by my side. She is a bit neurotic....fear issues, but we accomodate her and she is a happy soul. The attack did her fear issues no good, that is for sure!

Bev,

I know exactly how you feel. Ten years ago my flock of sheep was attacked by a pack of neighbor dogs, killing my stud ram (400 lbs) and one other ewe. But the damage they caused resulted in the putting down or eventual death of almost 20 ewes and lambs - 1/2 my flock. My barn looked like a horror movie.

I was so furious that someone would be so irresponsible, I wanted to shoot the dog owners. Instead I contacted a friend who is an attorney. I ended up suing the owners for the vet bill, property damage, and replacement costs of my flock. I'm not one to fly off the handle and sue at the drop of a hat, but stupid people need to be taught a lesson. Most states have civil codes dealing with attacks by dogs and you are well within your rights to kill any dog that is threatening your person or animals.

In CA damage caused by dog attacks falls under the dog owners home-owners insurance. I would strongly suggest that you contact an attorney to find out what your rights are and how best to proceed. Mainly because the police can't force the owner to pay your vet bills. I didn't have to pay a thing. All the attorney fees came out of the settlement. I would also contact animal control and find out what their vicious dog policy is. In my area the pound can pick up a dog that has a history of threatening people or livestock, but you have to start reporting the offenses. The owners are then required to attend training classes before the dog can be released - if it's released at all.

Sorry girls - my rant- but I have zero patience for dogs that attack or the idiots who own them.

Bev, your dog is adorable and I hope she recovers fully and without any fears. My sheep were very skittish for a long time after the attack. And if livestock can suffer from trauma I think mine did because some of them were just wierd afterwards.

Best wishes to you Bev.

Poor baby! How awful for her. I hope she heals well. Mentally as well as physically. She looks like like such a sweetie. I really wish dog owners would be more resonsible. I have to constantly defend my sweet, lovable 10 year old Pit Bull because of stupid, irresponsible, apathetic owners like what you just encountered. I just don't understand how people can be so.....!@#$!@#! You know what I mean? Sorry, I get a little carried away on this subject. This makes me so angry!

Oh Bev, she is a sweetie. Here is the crux of the problem, dog owners that are not reponsible for their animals shouldn't have them. My opinion, that includes neutering them. We have a neighbor 3 doors down, whose dog as bitten twice and he still got him back and doesn't take care of him or the other two he has. They are suppose to be housebound, but are they oh noo. My husband and I carry a baseball bat if they are out. I know it isn't the dogs fault, but I refuse to get bit. We keep calling the animal shelter, how many complaints do they need before they take care of this. It has been going on for a year. A dog kennel and a distant county shelter, hmmmm. I love animals but can we tie up the owners and treat them like they treat their animals!!!!!!
Most owners are responsible and care and then we have the few that make a spoiled mess for the rest of us. Isn't that just the way.
Okay, done urping up.
Carol Sue

Enjoying life.

Trap dogs and take them to animal control! We do it in Alaska, they get fined for unlicensed dog. There is a one bite rule and then dogs are put down.

I work in the ER, you cannot imagine the damage some dogs do to children, livestock and pets.

Please enforce stray dogs and trap them. jo

Oh my gosh! Poor Sadie! Depending on how much her surgeries and medicines are- I would take the guy to small claims court. You shouldn't have to pay because he lets his dogs roam!

By the way- I just wanted to clarify- I am all for giving people the benefit of the doubt and to let things go- when they make an effort- but seriously! You shouldn't have to pay when it is their fault. They were at the very least in violation of leash laws and that dog should be impounded for a rabies/viciouness trial.

I agree with everything said so far. This is so senseless and sad. You probably should contact an attorney, or at least try to look up the laws in your town/county regarding dog bite laws, or leash laws, if possible. I live in New York City (I know, I know, city slicker, I am), but the leash laws also apply to several counties outside of Kings County (NYC) and into New York State.

This is too bad that such an imbecile would jeopardize your dogs as well as his own. You never know, it might be that something one of his dogs attacks may attack BACK at some point.

I wish you the best, and your sweet dog, too.

I would have had a meltdown, I swear I would have went and shot that dog. What, heaven forbid if it had been a child!

You definitely have a civil suit on your hands............ A dog across from us growled at me one day, we shoo him home so he doesn't entice our dogs across the road. Our dogs seem to sense that we have a no animal trespass thing going on. Of course these same people let their small children play in the middle of the road (the youngest is two).

Bernese are the kindest dogs on the planet. Dog laws are getting very prohibitive in most areas due to irresponsible ownership! Good luck with your sweet dog.......

Poor Sadie..

I agree Bev.. they need to be accountable for their animals..
Or just not have them..
You should continue moving forward to showing him he's a sorry excuse of a pet owner.. & if the only way He see's going to take notice is through his wallet.. then.. so be it!!
Lesson Learned.. hopefully! He'll either get rid of the dogs.. or have them fixed.. & DEFINATLY learn to keep control of his own animals!

It's just such a sad shame that Sadie had to pay for his stupid ignorance..

My next door neighbors.. ( Not the ones with 50 kids.. but the ones on the other side of me..)
Had gotten a puppy last year..
He's SO out of control.. & they do nothing with him either .. he gets loose on a daily basis..
I don't even know the goofy dogs name.. I used to call him "Buddy".. I've since renamed him "Hell Boy" He's huge now.... seems to be either Husky or Malmute.. I really am not sure of the brred.. but it's along that line.. he has one blue eye.. He's kind of a yellowish/white dog.. with black & silver tips.. he is a really pretty dog.. But what an awful mess he is.. i wake up to him either UNDER my house barking.. Or TRYING to get under my house! Barking at the Chickens!! That aren't mine either.. (remember my stray chickens..?) And the cats/kittens.. that ALSO.. are not mine!! ( Remember how I have aquired THESE as THEY TOO are not mine!!..
So.. I am dealing with this lunatic Dog.. Who is reaising Cain in my yard ALL the time.. With Me.. & The Other Animals that reside in My yard in safe santuary.. as They all came from irresponsible owners TOO!!
While MY Dogs look on In amazement!!

I am Forever Dragging this big lughead back to his own yard.. & trying to hook him back up again!
& while I'm doing this.. I KNOW they are in the House.. & Just WON"T come out!!
( Of Course I'm not so sure I'D come outside with this crazy woman Dragging my dog through my yard Cussing either.. But.. Make an attempt.. ya know?)

ok.. Just though I'd share the common feeling of Stupid Irresponsible Pet owners with ya Bev..

Maybe THEY should be Strung up right next to their pets.. & they ALL get Fixed at the same time!! Would really make for a quieter World i think..

Oh boy.

Your poor dog. I'm sorry.

It angers me when people do not "fix" their dogs.

A neighbor brought his new (male ) pup to play with our dog last night. This guy sounds likie he is all for vaccinating and doing the flea prevention stuff, but when I asked if the dog was going to be fixed, he said propaby not in case they wanted to breed him later on down the line. Never mind, this dog will propably roam, and start marking our stuff.

I can't stand ignorance like this.

Update on Sadie.....she is doing much better. Her wound has FINALLY stopped draining and is starting to heal over. As for the Dumb S____ who's dog bit her....well according to the police the dog is scheduled for neutering this Thursday. I have asked the police to furnish me with written proof that the procedure was done so that I can put this to rest....otherwise, the guy gets the bill for Sadie's surgery and my rath!
And the rath will be much bigger than the bill!
