come available?? We may be moving to a slower paced area and I want to hear the rooster crow in the morning. I saw a post about chickens and thought I'd get a jump on them. Also, I'd like some Indian Runner ducks but don't know where to find them. I had some in AZ cuz they were someone's special order who didn't pay for them. But I really liked them cuz I thought they were funny.
I don't have time to google it but are there catalogs you can order chicks and see the pics? I would like a smaller breed and the more color or spots the better. Not really for eggs but just the cuteness factor. They'll probably end up pets anyway...hehehe...

I found a catalog that you can order chicks. They do have the Indian Runners and I'm looking at some of the exotics.
Thanks for the info!

Winona,
Most hatcheries won't mail this time of year because of the weather - too cold and the chicks might die in the post. But, Belt Hatchery is in Central CA. They may still be sending chicks out. |

I would wait until spring. You have to keep them inside under a heat lamp until they feather out. I keep mine in until about 6 weeks of age, and that's in the spring. During the winter, I don't think you would have much luck. Most hatcheries won't even be hatching anything to send right now, and even if they were, they probably wouldn't send them to anyone in a cold area. Murray McMurray sends me catalogs. I think you can sign up to get one on their site, which is www.mcmurrayhatchery.com |

As the other ladies posted, your best bet will be to wait 'till Spring.
Go ahead and google search for hatcheries. Most will send color broshures. I'm famillar with Cackle hatehery IDEAL and Murray McMurray.
We have tiny biddies right now thanks to an egg incubation seminar at the zoo. The bird cuartor ordered 500 fertilized eggs and had 40 or so hatch. I could only take 7. The chicks are in one of our out buildings under a heat lamp. It will be some time before they can go in with our other chickens. It's too cold!
In the meantime enjoy doing your search. If you become friendly with your feed store owners, maybe if they order chicks in the spring you can specifiy what you want and have them shipped this way. |
