Could someone please tell me what to do about my neighbors horses? They are dying! I have called the police many times and they keep saying to me "do you know how hard it is to have animals taken away?" Other people have also called the police and they do not care. It is 109 degrees here. I would go there and do something myself but there are 6 men who live there and no women. I don't want to knock on the door (think Deliverance) If anyone knows someone please let me know. I have tried the vets as well. Here is the link to their photos

Call you sheriff's department, your local animal shelter, send pictures to the newspapers, maybe even print out pictures of the horses and where they are kept and post them around town asking for public outcry? I would suggest doing all this without giving your identity if at all possible, especially since you are the neighbor!

I'd get the media involved ASAP. Get in touch with the local newspaper and TV stations, anything that will get the word out. I'd for sure start with the Sheriffs dept though. Good luck! Lu

In the meantime, would it be possible to get a little food or water to them? Is that fence electrified? |

poor babies!!
Angel.. they may be willing to get rid of them.. & I have found being in the horse business for SO many Years.. that THESE have turned out to be the BEST horses once they come around! They may still be fine.. really as bad as they look.. Don't go alone.. like you said.. All those guys there.. but if your interested.. & have the means approach them.. Ask them if YOU can HAVE these horses.. let them know you've seen their decline.. & You'd be willing to take the horses .. If You ARE able to or WANT to even!! if not.. if your not in te position to.. or willing to.. then you really need to do what the girls are saying.. get the sherrif involved.. Local television.. lathough that's probably going to get ugly.. living right there by them.. Definatly the Humane Society should be able to step in.. & I'm sure by the looks of them it's not a case of say.. an elderly horse.. they can't ALLLL be old & pets that have just aged now.. & are having a hard time with keeping weight on.. these are horses that are neglected.. clearly.. not just off their feed for a bit.. they are being neglected.. & for quite some time too! Hope we hear some promissing news from you sweetie.. keep up up to date please!

Even if they aren't saveable- they deserve a more kind end to their life than those fellows are giving them. I really hope they can be saved! I am sure they need some pretty critical vet care at this point. Do you know any big burly guy vets? Maybe you could have him go pound on the door?

Oh Do they have water at all? Can you toss some hay over the fence? If they don't have water can you drop a bucket over the fence and fill it with your hose? I am not sure how close they are to you. Be careful- that fence looks like it is probably electric.

That is so *bleepin'* terrible!! I like the suggestion of maybe giving them water and some hay. Approaching these people, I would be very leary....they can't be right in their heads to let these animals get like that! Definitely report this to the ASPCA or Humane Society immediately...or the media. Anything to draw a lot of attention to this!

Oh, that's awful, and you are such an angel to try and help these poor pitiful horses.
I googled Westmoreland (assumed since you are calling the police, these people must live inside city limits? and found that it is in Sumner county - then googled animal shelter sumner county tennessee and came up with this:
Friends of Sumner County Animal Control Friends of Sumner County (TN) Animal Control (Free Listing #3947 , since Aug 2002 ) Categories: Organization , Animal welfare , Humane shelter / pet adoption Address: 100 Spy Glass Way Map City, State: Hendersonville, Tennessee Country: United States zipcode:37075 Phone: 615-444-1196 Fax: on file WebSite: not working Email Email Not working Contact: Melissa Cothron Walrond Description: Friends of Sumner County (TN) Animal Control is being formed to help the 20 year old animal control facility in Gallatin, TN. The facility needs renovation and expansion. We also want compassionate care for the animals including proper shelter, food and veterinary care (including euthanasia done by professionals). We want to increase adoptions and encourage spay and neuter for all companion animals in the county.
Maybe someone in that organization can help you get the word out, or get some attention focused on these poor animals.

I can't say I have seen anything like that before in my life. Looks like something out of a terrible movie. So brave of you to try to take action! Good luck, and keep us in the know as to how it's going!

Not many humane societies are set up to deal with horses. Most can only handle dogs and cats. And cruelty laws in many states don't cover horses because they're considered livestock, not pets. If you can't get help from your local humane society, contact The Hooved Animal Humane Society in Woodstock Illinois. They can help you find local resources that can deal with horses.
BTW, DON'T feed them! Horses this debilitated cannot digest hay because their gut has shut down, and I promise you they'll colic. When a horse is this bad, it's up to experienced people such as rescuers that specialize in debilitated horses and veterinarians, to bring them back. The best protocol usually involves many very small feedings of alfalfa hay, probiotics, IV fluids, etc. And these may be too far gone.
If someone did this in Illinois, there are laws now by which people who do this would be prosecuted. But not all states consider this a crime. |

My knowledge of horses is limited to what would fit in a gnat's head, but surely they would be eating some of the green stuff in the background? Are they just so far gone that they have no appetite anymore? I hope something is done soon, as Alee said if nothing else but to put them at ease.

Mary Ann- That is a good point. I hadn't thought about the fact that they are more likely to bloat or colic or go into gastric distress. You are right, the feeding should wait until a professional can see to them.
Oh and another idea. If when you speak to the police- ask to be transfered up the line. The police are civil servants and it is their duty to look into these sort of issues.

I used to do dog rescue, and a great way to find rescue resources is throught Petfinder.
I did a search for horses, Westmoreland, Tennessee and this is all of the rescues/orgs that popped up. 1st, I'd contact the television media, 2nd, I'd contact an animal control division in a larger neighboring county. Sometimes they work in conjunction with smaller counties with lesser resources. 3rd, I'd contact these folks about legal procedures and would they be able to help you in ANY way, whether it's contacting THEIR sources in legal avenues, or whatever. If you can't get this link to open, search Friends of Hanna at Harry Moose Pet Retreat, Animal Relief Fund in Franklin, Tennessee and Middle Tennessee Animal Rescue, Rock Island, TN.
http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?breed=&tmpl=&preview=&animal=Horse&preview=&zip=Westmoreland%2C+TN
Good luck with this--I hope you can find a solution, and save these animals. Sounds like a cop-out, but I broke my own heart and spirit over things just like this and I couldn't do it anymore.
Tennessee and Kentucky, where I rescued have the most lackadasical animal welfare laws out of all of the states. We both rate rather low on our humane laws.

Angel, I googled horse rescues in Tennesee. It's easy....type, 'horse rescue in Tennesee', on the Google search, and you get a lot of rescue organizations listed. Hope that helps and good luck!

Angel-
Any updates?
Also if you want to email me the address of the people who own the horses, I would be happy to make the calls for you if you are worried about retaliation.

Angel, first of all, bless you for trying to help these horses. I agree with the ladies on here who have suggested contacting the sheriff, Humane Society, etc., but this is a case where I think it's important to actually show up in person at these various agencies (and also feed stores, vets, etc.) with photos in hand as proof. I would also suggest contacting your livestock inspector and/or agricultural extension office (should be in the County/Government section of your phonebook) to find out what it takes to have horses removed and what you can do at this point. These horses are beyond severely malnourished, clearly. It's a really sickening situation. Blessings to you and these sweeties.
