I need to take it in to my guy.... and Bill is going to refinish the cabinet.... But I have always wanted on of these.

there are still some gummy spots on it. But I gave it a once over with the magic eraser and some sewing machine oil... I think it is looking pretty good.

Just beautiful! Looks like my beloved Grandma's machine! I wish I had it....but my great aunt (her sister) ended up with it. Have fun. ARn't those magic eraser things wonderful? How did we ever go without them?

Looks like one my grandmother had and she used it until she passed! Don't know if it burnt up in the fire or what!

Awesome, Awesome!!!

Does it just need to be cleaned and oiled? Has it been electrified or is it the treadle type?

It is a treadle. It need some new belts, but the machine runs smoothly when you turn the rusty knob. Treadle is pretty cool too. It reminds me of a kick pottery wheel.
What sold me on this one was the fairly ornate cabinet. It seems to be in pretty good shap except for where probably potted plants sat on the top.... SO DH is going to fix that.

Oh, How lucky you are. I have always wanted o try one of these out. My neighbor growing up, the grandma used one of these. you will have to let us know how it goes when you first sew on it.

I love that machine! I got a treadle from my neighbor, but it is not in good shape. There are parts missing and it will not work. The frame is good, so my dh is going to make me a new oak top and it will be a table in the house soon. Good enough until I can get a good treadle that is fixable. Congrats, Elizabeth.

Ok a few things this machine is known as " The red eye" it is very popular make very collectible. Just so every one knows that isn't paint on it. Those are decals that singer used and it can be scratched off or cleaned off if you use harsh cleaners on it so be careful with those as yours look to be in good shape.

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

It's beautiful!! Even with all the bells and whistles, today's machines look so plain in comparison. My daughter has the treadle I got in the early 70's. Traded a 8 track tape player for it...and she thought she got the best part of the deal! I can't remember what brand it is, actually had kinda forgotten about it until now. The cabinets were so ornate too in those days. My stepmom has one my Dad found in an old abandoned barn near them in the early 70's. Oak cabinet and still had the booklet and attachements in the drawers. I think she will let me have it someday.

Thanks everyone, I am so excited to have it.

Sunshine.... so how collectable are they if they have the egyptian motif? There is one for $50!
I knew that even if it was paint, it can be cleaned off.. SO I check out online how the collectors do it. Sewing machine oil, WD-40, and turtlewax bug & tar remover... I need to get more sewing machine oil.

Funny thing, Bill who collects everything said, Hey I have a set of those drawers in the basement. He is so strange that he collects everything.

Geeze sunshine.... How do you know all of this! I am so impressed. It has a cabinet and it looks like the decals are pretty intact, except where you rest your arm on the base. the areas where there wouldnt be as much wear are probably under a ton of gunk Same potted plant damage on the veneered top.... which DH said it is pretty easy to replace and match. I did email them and I think it would be worth a $50 risk. Cross your fingers that they get back to me.

BTW I paid $80 for mine.... Even if I paid too much, I will get $80 of enjoyment out of it. But what is mine worth? I still need to take it in to my sewing machine guy. I cant wait to actually stitch a seam. I did look it up on the singer site and it said mine was born or the # was issued on March 30 1910. It is a #28 style which I have no idea what that means. Is there a guide book for old treadle machines? or a collector site for them?

If cabinet is shot the machine is usually shot too but the legs of the cabinet the tredal part is usually worth between 25 and 50 itself as people use them to make table legs for side table, drop leaf tables and round tables so if nothing else is good the legs still are more with tredle legs than just legs as when they went to electric a lot of people checked the treadle part and just kept the legs on the machine to give them more leg room to sew and for room for the new foot pedal to. So even if everything is bad about case and machine then you still have your money in the legs

You can also part out the lovely drawers if you had. I've bought just the drawers before, painted them, lined them with wallpaper to make beautiful storage boxes out of. I've seen them sell for as much as $25 each if they're in good shape and ornate.

Sunshine, Thank you so much.

I have not seen anything very similar or as in good condition as mine... but knowing this all makes me feel really good about my purchase.

LOL Looking at the serial number today... in the light with a flashlight... it is pretty gunky too... I missed a whole digit. But it is now I #66 December 14, 1915. 5 years newer and still pretty happy. But the cabinet is more similar to a little bit older ones. The newer ones are much more plain, even if they are the seven drawer ones. But the whole dating thing makes so much more sense now.

But Again thanks so much. I may just get the Sphinx one. DH is having pretty major orthopedic surgery on the 31 and will be down for 12 weeks.... so he can sit and tinker and clean to keep him busy. LOL $50 is worth keeping him out of my hair for a few days... maybe a week!
