meet a snake in the grass.
This is my parent's Boston Terrier after an encounter with a copperhead.
He looks a bit like Winston Churchill now. Poor thing.
Be careful when you send your pets out! Especially in drought-ridden areas. The copperhead that got Cabot was right on the patio outside the back door looking for water. Which would have been fine if the incredibly curious (and not very bright) dog had not discovered it and tried to smell it.

Oh, Karin! The poor boy! I'm surprised it didn't kill him. Did they take him to the vet right away? Did they do some kind of first aid? What should a person do in a case like that? Thanks for the tip about drought conditions. We're having a major drought right now. I've only seen rat snakes at the farm so far, but everyone around me has a pond, it seems.

Poor baby!
When we lived in eastern NC, our dobermin was bitten by a cooper head (or poplar leaf, as they call them there). It was so long ago, that I can't even remember if the vet gave her a shot or anything.

He is still at the vet today. We had to take him to the vet ER last night and pick him up this am. They had him on IVs and gave him a steroid shot and antibiotics. His regular vet is observing him until later this afternoon. He will have to take antibiotics for a while. The swelling will travel throughout his entire body before it is all over. Honestly, if he had only listened to my dad!!

He must have a very strong constitution. Please keep us posted about him as he recovers.

Oh Karin, that is so very sad and I am sure he doesn't feel good either. Bless his heart! Please post some pictures when he is all better so we can see him at his best! So sorry but glad he survived the snake bite.

wow! Poor little guy! I hope he makes it through okay! Aren't copperheads really poisonous? I am so so so glad that there aren't any native poisonous snakes in this area!

That poor little thing! I can't believe it! He's a trooper, for sure. I'm really thinking of him and your parents. Poor little boo. J

So.. THATS how they get English Bull dogs? They breed Boster terrier's with Copper Head Venom???
Poor little man.. He looks like he just wants to lay those poofy cheeks down because they are just too heavy for him to carry around.. doesn't he? Poor baby.. Give him a teeny light little hug for me.. will ya.. not too tight though.. something tells me he really doesn't want a very big one right about now..

When living in Southern California our Doberman was bitten by a Rattlesnake, right on her nose. It actually cost as much to treat her with anti-venom as it would a human. That was one big vet bill. Please give Cabot a hug for me. Hugs, Kathy

Kathie- You made me spit my water out!! That is so funny! I am going to have my parents read all of your sweet posts about Cabot, their "little boy." Thank you all so much.

Our golden retriever was bit last summer but we didn't know for about two days because she hid under some bushes and we couldn't find her. She got bit on the front leg. When she finally came out she was swollen hugh. We took her to the vet and all they did was giver her some antibiotic. The vet said he was 99% sure it had been a copperhead. He also said in most cases they will not administer antivenom because that can sometimes kill the animal. She is still scarred on that leg and has some limited use of it. Very Scary!

Assuming he's going to be fine, those pics were so funny! I do hope he'll be fine and maybe next time he'll 'think' before he sticks his nose somewhere he doesn't belong!! Poor baby!
