Hi, I did a search on the site to see if anyone else has started one but it didn't find one, so if I messed up, Sorry in advance, lol.

I am getting away from chemical cleaners and am trying other more enviroment friendly ones. I just bought my first bottle of Seventh Generation free & clear all purpose cleaner. Has anyone else used their product before? I like this one becuase it has NO SCENT.

I liked it but I like vinegar and rubbing alcohol better as well as peroxide. Those are my three main ingredients and sometimes the only ingredients for all of my cleaners sans the laundry detergent, which is also homemade.

oh! another good cleaner is lemon juice. thats it and all we use in our home.

Thanks Tasha, as soon as I get a sec, I will look into all the homemade cleaning recipes here. They sound like a smarter choice.

I agree. I use Vinegar, Baking Soda, Washing Soda, and Borax to clean just about everything in my house. I can jazz up all of my cleaners with a little essential oil if I want a scent. And I make my own laundry soap with borax, washing soda, baking soda, and homemade soap.

Thanks Alee, I used to have a book, it was green and softcovered, it was all about living the homesteading lifestyle and was wonderful because it was chockful of homemade formulas. Needless to say, it is somewhere in the vortex that swallows up my stuff, lol I can't find it anyway in this house.

So I am thrill that your girls make all your own. Now I can too. My biggest challange is hard water, very very hard water and soap scum. What really works best for these?

I love using baking soda to neutralize our hard water. Have you ever taken a Baking Soda bath? The water feels so silky and your skin feels so smooth and soft after wards! :) And baking soda is really nice and mild but does a good job of getting off hard water residue on showers and bath tubs. I usually clean up soap scum right after taking a shower or bath (so it is softer) and I use a homemade cleaner of vinegar and homemade soap. Sometimes I use just homemade soap with washing soda, borax, and baking soda all dissolved together.

I second the baking soda. That is why I added it to my laundry detergent that I sell, too....because my water is so hard and a LOT of people have hard water. It's a great softener!

Tasha, what do you use rubbing alcohol for? I don't have hard water, but the daily shower spray has always worked for me... and I think alcohol is a major ingredient. I'd like to make my own. I'm curious if you make that. Thanks!

I use it with vinegar as an all purpose, sanitizing cleaner. Now keep in mind the difference between sterile and sanitized here...your home should be sanitary. Vinegar kills the icky germs and leaves the good ones. The place where I really use the vinegar and alcohol combo is on the toilet. I also use it on my bidet for the diapers, as I use it to scrape gunky poops off that wont come off with just the spray alone.

I also use vineage and peroxide in the same manner, but I dont mix them until they are sprayed onto the surface because vinegar and peroxide mixed together become vinegar and water.

Baking soda and water also make an excellent vegetable wash as opposed to those expensive ones you can buy at the store.

Tasha, what proporations do you use for the toilet cleaner?
Does it matter which type of vinger you use?

Bought the borax tonight. My husband is on the band wagon to now. He is all excited that I found a nautral homemade formaul for scouring powder. His hands get really bad and he was using comet to clean them. That kinda freaked me out, so I found him an alternative. Going to mix it up tomorrow for him to try.

Alee, he didn't think it would hurt his hands, LOL Needless to say, he has changed his thinking, with a genlte nudge from me ( ;

Tasha, I had to tell you, I LOVE your vinger/alcohol combo. I used it this morning on our toilet, YAHOO.. it is fabulous!!!! and I put to use my "new" scouring powder on my bathroom sink. And thanks for the lemon juice tip also. I have one of those old farmhouse porcline cast iron sinks, and the built in dish rack side gets discolored (the sink is over 70 yrs old) and I poured the juice on the surface and it fizzed like peroxide does. It is brighter and whiter now, thanks again!

I use vinegar, and baking soda almost exclusively. The laundry is another story- dh does that, and I do nothing for stains, and it's all chaos- but hopefully that will be remedied when we move. (and we might be moving out of diapers too, which will cut down! yay!) I also use an all purpose cleaner I got from Annie Berthold Bond's book- it's a tiny bit of borax, washing soda, and castile soap diluted in a few cups of hot water. Those three things, and I"m pretty much covered.

Tasha, how can vinegar kill good germs and not bad? Who decided what's "good" and "bad"?

The all natural route is the only way to go - baking soda, vinegar, borax. There are so many books out there regarding how to clean "green" and web-sites as well where you can find how to make any "potion" you want. It's just so much fun looking up all these things and learning so much. I'm always buying vinegar in the large gallon size and always two at a time since I go throught it so much, same with the borax and baking soda. Just gotta have a lot of it around.

Peace and love.

I know I'm doing good when my son told me the other day.. Mom I am glad your not using those chemical things, they stink. "Set a good example" comes to mind, lol. I love what Borax does for my tub/shower, it gleams. Just made another batch of "scouring powder" and this time I poured some into a used shaker jar for easy use and have labled it. It sits right next to the sink.

I just learned a trick for cleaning greasy hands. Add sugar with the soap and scrub. It really cleans and doesn't dry out your skin. Gets under the fingernails too.

Mary-

That is a good idea. You can make a sugar scrub with liquid soap, you just have to add a lot to get past the point of saturation. You can do the same for hard bars of soap too, if you make your own soap.

I make a sugar scrub with soap, sugar and olive oil for the moisture. It's wonderful stuff...

say if any Minnesota girls want to come tot eh Cass County Fair in a couple of weeks, I am giving two workshops, one on homemade cleaning products-as there are ZERO chemical cleaners in my home- and one on natural, homemade bath and body care. It's gonna be fun fun fun!

I am glad you are all having so much fun with this...seeeeee, cleaning CAN be fun!
